Kapitel 7: Chapter 7: The Cost of Vision (rewrite)

A Royal Decision

King Uther was in deep contemplation after Merlin's advice. He understood that even a misstep in policy could be more damaging than incompetence itself. He had wrestled with the implications of the proposed changes, but ultimately, he decided to move forward with implementing Morgan's suggestions.

"Let's proceed with the implementation of Morgan's ideas," Uther declared. "We'll reward farming to encourage agricultural productivity and motivate our soldiers for the war effort. These measures should boost both our economy and military."

He was aware that Camelot's situation differed from that of the Roman Empire. The lord system in Camelot was still evolving, with many emerging lords and a significant number of self-cultivating farmers. This made the reward system more feasible and potentially more effective in increasing grain production.

"I will ensure this is carried out," King Uther affirmed with a satisfied smile. "I'll also prepare for the wedding ceremony of my daughter. I intend to observe how my future son-in-law has prepared for this important event."

Since Lott was not yet a vassal in the full sense, the wedding would take place on his territory. King Uther planned to visit Lott's lands and inspect the preparations, reflecting his commitment to both his daughter and the future of Camelot.

"Remember to invite some of the noble lords to the wedding," King Uther added as he prepared to depart.

Merlin acknowledged the request with a nod, understanding the importance of including the nobility in such events to maintain political alliances.

Return to Orkney

Back at Orkney County, Lott and Morgan had returned to his territory. Orkney, characterized by its coastal archipelago, was significantly different from Camelot. The castle, built on a plain near the sea, provided a stunning view of the ocean. However, for Lott and Morgan, the sea was a reminder of the enemies and challenges they faced.

Lott, riding ahead with Morgan, was visibly excited about returning to his castle. His thoughts, however, betrayed his nervousness and eagerness to see the results of his preparations.

[Finally, we're almost there. I'm eager to see how the castle has been decorated. I've instructed the staff to prepare everything for the wedding. After being single for over 40 years, marrying someone as wonderful as Morgan is truly a joy.]

[For years, I felt out of place with the style of illustrations surrounding me. Thankfully, Morgan's presence is refreshing and endearing!]

Morgan, meanwhile, could overhear Lott's inner thoughts, which caused her to blush and feel a mix of emotions. She was aware of his enthusiasm but found some of his thoughts—particularly regarding the illustrations—embarrassing.

[So he's been looking at the album and imagining these things? How can he have such thoughts about me? It's quite unsettling to know he's been so preoccupied with this.]

Despite her initial irritation, Morgan found herself increasingly curious about Lott's vision for their future home.

A Glimpse into the Future

As they approached the castle, Morgan noticed improvements in the surroundings. The farmland was well-maintained, and the farmers appeared industrious and content. This contrasted with the neglected fields she had seen in Camelot.

[The improvements here are impressive. The farmers seem to be thriving, which reflects well on Lott's governance. Perhaps his approach to rewarding and supporting them is more effective than I initially thought.]

Morgan's curiosity grew as she observed the successful farming efforts and the apparent prosperity of the area. She was surprised by the low-interest or even interest-free loans Lott had provided to the farmers.

[Is Lott truly spending so much to support the farmers? I thought high-interest loans were the norm for lords. This approach seems unconventional, but it appears to be working well.]

Lott, noticing Morgan's interest, smiled and explained, "I strive to be a responsible lord. Ensuring the well-being of my people benefits everyone. Compared to other lords who exploit their subjects, I believe in fostering long-term prosperity."

[Unlike those who prioritize exploitation, my goal is to create a sustainable and thriving community. It's crucial for the overall success of my domain.]

Morgan was taken aback by Lott's perspective and realized the depth of his commitment to improving his territory.

Reflections on the Future

As they continued their journey, Morgan pondered the complexities of her upcoming life with Lott. Despite her initial reservations, she found herself intrigued by the possibilities of their future together.

[Lott's dedication to his land and people is admirable. While I had doubts about his approach, it seems he genuinely wants to make a positive difference.]

She looked at Lott, whose confidence in his castle and plans was evident. Morgan felt a mix of anticipation and trepidation about the changes and challenges that lay ahead.

[Despite the uncertainties, it seems there might be some pleasant surprises in store. I'll keep an open mind and see what unfolds.]

The chapter closed with Morgan's reflections on Lott's efforts and her evolving perceptions of him. The journey ahead promised both challenges and discoveries as they navigated their new life together.
