Kapitel 16: The Price Family

Captain John Price was known for his unwavering commitment to duty. A seasoned leader of an elite task force team, he had faced down dangers that would leave most people trembling. But today, he traded his tactical gear for a flannel shirt, his combat boots for worn-out sneakers, and the battlefield for the warm embrace of home.

It was the weekend before Halloween, and the annual neighborhood contest was around the corner. Price could hear the excitement buzzing outside as children and adults alike began to decorate for the festive occasion. Normally, he wouldn't have thought twice about missing the prelude to a competition, but his wife, Y/N, had a way of turning every moment into an adventure.

"Dad, come on!" Naomi's voice echoed from the living room. teen was sprawled out on the floor, an array of decorations surrounding her: faux cobwebs, plastic spiders, and pumpkins of all shapes and sizes.

"In a minute!" Price called back, trying to locate his youngest, James, who was in danger of being buried under a mound of skeletons and autumn leaves.

Y/N entered the room, her hair pulled up in a tight bun and an apron tied around her waist. "I thought we could create the ultimate haunted house!" she declared, brandishing a plastic black cat.

Price smiled. "Sounds like a plan. What's our strategy?"

"First, let's transform the front yard. We need an entrance that'll make everyone stop in their tracks. I was thinking fog machines and some spooky music," Y/N strategized, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

"Alright, let's get to work," Price said, putting on his game face. He may have been a decorated soldier, but today he was a father and husband ready to tackle this mission together.

They started outside, hanging string lights in the trees, creating a curtain of orange and purple. Price expertly maneuvered the ladder, while Naomi handed him the decorations with the precision of a seasoned soldier on a supply run. James, meanwhile, made himself the lead 'spook' on the ground, growling at passersby with all the ferocity a four-year-old could muster.

"Dad, look!" Naomi exclaimed, pointing to one of their neighbors who had already started setting up their yard with an inflatable ghost towering above the fence. "We have to make ours better!"

"Challenge accepted," Price said, rallying his troops. "Let's show them what we've got."

The sun dipped lower in the sky, casting an ethereal orange glow over the neighborhood as they decorated. They made a graveyard with foam tombstones and a 'witch's corner' with a cauldron bubbling (a cleverly placed pot filled with dry ice and water). Laughter and playful screams filled the air as they worked together, lost in the spirit of the season.

As twilight settled in, Y/N suggested they go for a classic touch. "Let's put a scarecrow by the front door, a guardian of the treats!"

Price nodded with enthusiasm, helping Naomi and James assemble a makeshift scarecrow crafted from an old flannel shirt, jeans filled with straw, and a pumpkin head that Y/N had painted with a mischievous grin.

"Perfect!" James squeaked, twisting his pumpkin as if it were a prize.

"I can already see the trophies!" Naomi chimed in, admiring their creation.

Just when they thought it couldn't get any better, Y/N pulled out a box of glow-in-the-dark stickers. "We need something to light up the night!"

With a quick plan, they decided to stretch them across the fence, making whimsical shapes of bats and ghosts that would glow ominously once the sun fully vanished.

Finally, as the night fell, Price stood back and surveyed their work. The flickering lights, the eerie sounds of the fog machines, and the vibrant colors of their decorations all combined for an inviting, yet spine-chilling spectacle.

Where once stood a simple front yard, there was now a delightful haunted house, awash in hues of orange and black, radiating warmth and festivity.

"That… is one impressive sight," Y/N said, her voice laced with pride as she stood by his side.

"I couldn't have done it without you guys," Price said, pulling Naomi and James into a huddle, pressing a kiss to Y/N's temple.

They laughed and shared stories about the spooky spirit of Halloween, the love among them brighter than any Halloween light.

As the evening drew to a close, they sat around a fire pit in the backyard, roasting marshmallows and making plans for the contest ahead. Price might have been a soldier whose battlefield was far from his home, but tonight, as he watched his family revel in their creations, he realized he had won the most important battle of all—the battle of love, laughter, and togetherness.

And as the moon rose high, shining down on their handiwork, Captain John Price knew that when Halloween night came, they would together spread their joy throughout the neighborhood, and that would be the sweetest victory of them all.
