25% The Hidden King: Reincarnated as Cid Kageno / Chapter 2: A New World, A New Power

Kapitel 2: A New World, A New Power

The chill of early dawn settled over the quiet town of Midgar. The light of the rising sun bathed the rooftops in a soft glow, and the bustling streets were slowly coming to life. For most, it was just another peaceful day. But for Cid Kageno, it was the beginning of something much more profound—a day that would mark the start of his journey toward a power he had never known before.

Sitting cross-legged on the cold stone floor of his family's estate, Cid stared at his hands, flexing his fingers slowly. He could feel it again—the power. It hummed beneath his skin like a gentle current, not yet fully realized, but undeniably there. Ever since his reincarnation into this strange new world, the sensation had been a constant presence, growing stronger with each passing day. Magic. Real magic.

He hadn't believed it at first. How could he? In his previous life, magic was the stuff of fantasy—something confined to the pages of books and the screens of anime. But here, in this new world, it was as real as the air he breathed. And it was his to wield.

I need to understand it. I need to master it.

His mind raced with possibilities. He wasn't the same Cid Kageno from the original story—the one who sought power for the sheer thrill of it. No, the man inside Cid now had a purpose. He had been given a second chance, and he wouldn't waste it. If he was to survive in this world, if he was to become the true Eminence in Shadow, he needed to control this power, harness it, and push it beyond its limits.

His new family, the Kageno household, was a wealthy, aristocratic family with deep roots in the kingdom of Midgar. They were respected and well-connected, with his older sister, Claire, already making waves as a prodigious swordswoman. Cid, on the other hand, had been seen as a bit of a black sheep—quiet, withdrawn, and decidedly ordinary. No one expected much from him. But that was just fine with him. After all, it made it easier to work in the shadows when no one was paying attention.

---

The first time Cid had truly felt magic was a few days after his reincarnation. It had come to him in the dead of night, when he was lying in bed, staring at the ceiling and trying to make sense of everything. There was a subtle tingling in his fingertips, an energy that surged and swirled just beneath the surface of his skin. He had experimented with it, trying to summon it forth, but his efforts had been clumsy and unfocused. It was like trying to catch smoke with his bare hands.

But now, things were different. Over the last few days, he had started to feel more in tune with the energy, more aware of how it moved within him. It was like a river, flowing through his body in invisible currents, waiting to be shaped and molded.

Sitting here isn't going to do me any good, he thought, pushing himself to his feet. He needed space to practice, somewhere far from the prying eyes of his family and the servants. If they saw him experimenting with magic, it would raise questions—questions he wasn't ready to answer.

He glanced out the window, his gaze drifting to the dense woods that bordered the Kageno estate. That would do. The forest was quiet, secluded, and far enough from the house that no one would notice him if he went there to practice. He could push his abilities to the limit without worrying about being discovered.

Without a second thought, Cid slipped out of his room, moving silently through the corridors of the estate. His training as the "Eminence in Shadow" was already beginning to take shape—his movements were cautious and deliberate, each step calculated to avoid detection. He had no intention of being caught.

As he stepped into the crisp morning air, a faint smile tugged at the corner of his lips. This world was so different from the one he had known, yet there was something exciting about the freedom it offered. He wasn't bound by the limitations of his old life anymore. Here, he could be whoever he wanted to be.

---

The forest was quiet, save for the gentle rustling of leaves in the wind. Cid stood in the center of a small clearing, his hands raised in front of him as he focused on the energy within. His breaths were steady, his mind clear.

Focus.

That was the first lesson he had learned. Magic wasn't something that could be controlled through brute force or sheer willpower alone. It required a deep connection between the mind and the body, a balance that had to be maintained at all times.

Slowly, he began to pull on the energy within him, drawing it to the surface. It responded to his call, swirling through his veins like liquid fire. His fingers tingled as the magic coursed through them, and he could feel the power building, ready to be released.

But as he tried to push the magic outward, it faltered. The energy slipped through his grasp, scattering into the air like a burst of static. He cursed under his breath, shaking his hands as the power dissipated.

This isn't easy, he thought, wiping the sweat from his brow. In the stories, magic always seemed so effortless, so natural. But here, in the real world, it was anything but. Every time he tried to summon it, the power slipped away, just beyond his reach.

I need more control.

He closed his eyes, centering himself once more. This time, he wouldn't rush it. He would let the energy flow naturally, guiding it instead of forcing it. Slowly, he drew the magic to his fingertips again, feeling the familiar warmth spread through his hands.

Control it. Don't push too hard.

The energy swirled and coiled around his fingers, and this time, it held. Cid opened his eyes and watched in awe as faint wisps of light danced across his skin, shimmering in the early morning light. It was a small success, but a success nonetheless.

---

Hours passed, and Cid continued to experiment with the magic. He pushed himself to the limit, testing his endurance and control. There were moments of frustration, when the energy slipped away from him, leaving him drained and exhausted. But there were also moments of triumph, when the magic responded to his will, shaping itself into small, tangible bursts of power.

He discovered that he had a natural affinity for shadow magic—a form of magic that allowed him to manipulate darkness and conceal himself from view. It was fitting, considering his goal of becoming the ultimate figure in the shadows.

At first, his attempts to use shadow magic were crude. He could create small pockets of darkness, but they were unstable, flickering and fading as quickly as they appeared. But as he practiced, he began to refine his technique, learning how to extend the shadows and manipulate them with more precision.

By the end of the day, Cid had managed to cloak himself in a veil of shadow for a few brief moments—long enough to slip through the forest undetected by the wildlife around him. It wasn't perfect, but it was a start.

---

As the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the forest floor, Cid sat beneath a tree, catching his breath. His body ached from the day's exertions, and his head throbbed from the strain of using magic. But despite the exhaustion, he felt an overwhelming sense of satisfaction.

He was getting stronger.

In his previous life, he had been powerless—just another face in the crowd, living a mundane existence with no real direction. But here, in this world, he had the opportunity to become something more. He had power, real power, and he was determined to use it.

This is just the beginning, he thought, clenching his fists. There was so much more to learn, so much more to master. The Diabolos Cult, the secret organizations that lurked in the shadows—if he wanted to take them on, he would need to push himself even further.

But he couldn't rush it. He had to be patient, methodical. Just as he had learned with magic, he needed control. Rushing headlong into battle without understanding his own limits would only get him killed.

For now, he would continue to train, to hone his skills in secret. He had time. The world wasn't going anywhere, and neither was the Diabolos Cult. When the time was right, he would strike. But until then, he would remain hidden, biding his time in the shadows.

---

As Cid prepared to head back to the estate, a sudden rustling in the bushes caught his attention. He froze, his heart skipping a beat. Had someone seen him? He had been careful, making sure no one followed him into the forest. But maybe he had been too focused on his training to notice.

A moment later, a familiar figure stepped into the clearing. It was Claire, his older sister, her sharp eyes scanning the area as if she had sensed something was off.

"What are you doing out here?" Claire asked, her voice laced with suspicion.

Cid swallowed hard, trying to come up with an excuse. He hadn't expected anyone to find him out here, least of all Claire. She was one of the few people who could see through his façade, and that made her dangerous.

"I was just… taking a walk," Cid replied, keeping his tone casual. "I needed some fresh air."

Claire's eyes narrowed, and for a moment, Cid thought she might press the issue. But then she shrugged, seemingly satisfied with his answer.

"Be careful out here," she said, her tone softening slightly. "There are wild animals in the forest. You shouldn't wander too far from the estate."

Cid nodded, relieved that she hadn't pried further. Claire had always been protective of him, even if she didn't fully understand him. She was a prodigy, skilled in both swordsmanship and magic, and she had a reputation for being fierce. If anyone could sense that something was off, it would be her.

As she turned to leave, Cid watched her go, his mind racing. He couldn't afford to let his guard down, not even around his own family. Claire was sharp, and if she discovered what he was really up to, it could complicate things.

---

Once Claire was out of sight, Cid let out a long breath, the tension in his body slowly easing. He had been reckless, pushing himself too far, too quickly. If he wasn't careful, he could draw unwanted attention to himself. And the last thing he needed was his family getting involved in his plans.

I need to be more careful, he reminded himself. The shadows were his domain, and he couldn't afford to expose himself too soon. There was still so much he didn't know about this world, about magic, and about the forces that lurked in the dark corners of society.

But one thing was clear: he was on the right path.

As he made his way back to the estate, Cid's mind was already racing with new ideas, new strategies. He would continue to train in secret, honing his abilities until he was ready to move forward with his plans. And when the time came, he would strike from the shadows, unseen and unstoppable.

This world was full of dangers, but Cid Kageno wasn't afraid. He had been given a second chance, and he intended to use it. He would become the true Eminence in Shadow, the hidden mastermind who controlled everything from the darkness.

And no one would ever see him coming.
