Kapitel 73: Too Close for Comfort

The red cape flew through the sky as Clark returned to the iceberg where they had crashed.

He pulled out the fighter plane that had been buried in the ice and snow along with Captain America.

Clark instructed Soren to stay with Captain America inside the plane while he carried the plane and flew all the way back to America.

He placed the plane and the still-sleeping Captain America on the roof of the S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters in New York and then flew back to Metropolis with Soren.

After the main guest of the birthday party, Clark disappeared, their friends began to leave his apartment one by one.

By the end, only Pete was left, still helping to clean up the mess from the party.

Clark and Soren kept apologizing to Pete.

Pete just sighed as he carried a garbage bag and shook his head with a "tsk." "Don't even tell me where you guys went. I really don't want to hear it—"

Pete felt like he had come all the way from Kansas just to watch these two flirting!

Clark and Soren had been acting strange back in high school, and now it seemed even more so!

As the party prince of Smallville, Pete knew exactly what people did when they ran off from a party.

He nudged Clark with his elbow and teased, "You didn't really need to rush off like that, did you? When you left, we all thought you were angry!"

"Rush… rush off? Rush for what?" Clark stammered, clearly caught off guard by Pete's teasing.

Pete gave him a wink and a cheeky grin, flashing his white teeth at Clark, "I'll get you a bottle of wine for that 'special occasion' when you two 'come out' someday, my friend."

"W-what 'come out'!" Soren's face turned red as he jumped up and pushed Pete, "Stop saying nonsense! We're not like you think! Are you going back or not? Let me buy you a ticket…"

Soren and Clark took Pete to the train station together.

Soren even handed Pete a bunch of Metropolis souvenirs as a "bribe" to keep him from spreading rumors back in Smallville.

Pete had teased him so much that when Clark asked if he wanted to stay the night, Soren nervously refused.

—How could Pete think he and Clark were in that kind of relationship?

He had never even considered it…

He and Clark had a pure, family-like bond!

He had watched the little Kryptonian grow up!

When Clark was four, Soren even tucked him in at night!

…Soren was always careful not to take advantage of Clark.

But now, after Pete pointed out how close their relationship is, Soren suddenly realized that maybe it was a bit too close.

So, Soren bolted.

He bought a last-minute plane ticket and fled as his life was depended on it.

He transformed into Angemon and flew back to his happy place where he could escape—S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters in New York.

That night, S.H.I.E.L.D. was buzzing with excitement, and the whole team enjoying a night of family fun.

Ignoring all of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s defense systems, a mysterious flying figure casually placed a large fighter plane on the rooftop—practically mocking the organization that prided itself on being the Strategic Homeland Security defense.

Everyone at headquarters rushed out to see the unexpected plane.

Inside the plane, they found the legendary figure from World War II, Steve Rogers, who is still asleep.

Current S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury rushed to the scene after receiving the news and personally oversaw the team as they carefully removed the legendary hero from the plane.

—Ever since S.H.I.E.L.D. had successfully brought the Winter Soldier over from Hydra a few years ago, they seemed to have gotten pretty good at handling frozen war heroes.

Captain America was being kept in a special high-security room at S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters.

In his Angemon form, Soren landed on Iron Man's high-altitude platform and made his way inside.

As soon as he stepped into the medical wing's hallway, he bumped into Dr. Banner who came in a hurry.

Dr. Banner looked like he'd seen a ghost when he ran into him.

He quickly stepped around Angemon's large figure with a polite but surprised expression, "...What are you doing here?"

Angemon stopped, "Doctor, I heard S.H.I.E.L.D. received a very important person."

Dr. Banner gave him a look, "You're always so well-informed."

Angemon smiled sheepishly, "Not that well-informed."

It's not like he always knew where Whiplash was before anyone else, stopped the Mandarin's schemes, prevented a huge battle between Iron Man and the Winter Soldier, or gave S.H.I.E.L.D. all the details about the Silver Surfer's visit before the Fantastic Four even found him…

Basically, Soren was the alien insider who seemed to know everything that went on at S.H.I.E.L.D.

As one of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s special members, Dr. Banner—who shared a bond with the Hulk—didn't have a bad impression of Angemon at first.

In fact, he thought he had found a kindred spirit, since only Angemon could relate to the Hulk's size—they were both giants, after all.

Hulk loved Angemon.

In his green eyes, the white-winged creature looked like a big, white butterfly—way more fun than those dark, shiny trucks or noisy little cars.

However, Dr. Banner soon discovered the downside of Angemon: this six-winged being had the same bad habits as Tony Stark.

Every time he visited S.H.I.E.L.D., he raided Banner's fridge for snacks.

Worse, just like Stark, Angemon couldn't help but critique Banner's experiments.

He'd always point out what was wrong here or there, making Banner shut down his lab the moment he saw either of them coming to avoid interruptions.

In short, Dr. Banner was absolutely fed up with the two of them!
