70% COTE: Hikigaya's Rejection of the Strength-First Philosophy / Chapter 63: Is It Possible That Class D Received Zero Points?

Kapitel 63: Is It Possible That Class D Received Zero Points?

The homeroom teacher of Class D, Chabashira Sae, finally entered the classroom, but despite her arrival, the lively atmosphere of the class remained unchanged.

Over the past month, the students of Class D had grown accustomed to the school's lack of discipline and the total freedom it allowed, letting them indulge in their whims without restraint.

However, today, something was different about Chabashira Sae. Her expression was notably serious, and she carried something unusual in her hands.

Upon seeing her demeanor, most of the students were puzzled, but Ike Kanji, one of the three notorious troublemakers in the class, decided to break the silence with his usual lack of tact.

"Sensei, don't tell me it's because your period hasn't come—?"

This guy...

Hikigaya could hardly believe Ike had the guts to say something so reckless. Had the freedom of this environment eroded his common sense to this extent?

Class D, as a whole, was a perfect display of humanity's lowest point—an example of how far people could sink in an environment with no rules.

Surprisingly, Chabashira Sae's expression remained unchanged after Ike's inappropriate comment. Without reacting, she coldly swept her gaze across the room and spoke in a steady, controlled tone:

"Before we start our morning meeting, do any of you have questions you'd like to ask? If there's something on your mind, now would be the best time to bring it up."

Her words carried a weight of certainty as if she was fully aware that the students of Class D had major concerns. And indeed, several hands immediately shot up.

"Um... I checked this morning and noticed that no points were credited to my account," spoke a timid-looking boy with a bowl haircut. Hikigaya remembered his name—Hondō Ryōtarō. "Weren't we supposed to receive points on the first of every month? I couldn't even buy juice this morning..."

Chabashira's response was calm and detached. "As I explained at the beginning of the school year, points are credited to your accounts on the first of each month. The points for this month have already been distributed."

"Huh? But... we didn't receive any points."

At once, confusion spread like wildfire through Class D. Every student instinctively checked their phones, but none could find any trace of new points being credited.

Horikita Suzune, who had also been checking her phone, suddenly remembered something Hikigaya had mentioned earlier in the day.

"Hikigaya, when we were on our way here, you said something like 'the points might have already been credited.' Did you already figure out what's going on?"

Horikita's sharp question seemed to imply that she didn't believe Hikigaya had known the answer beforehand but suspected he might have made a lucky guess.

"What do you think?" Hikigaya responded without looking at her.

He didn't turn around. Instead, he kept his eyes on the chaotic scene unfolding in the classroom, savoring the spectacle with a cold detachment.

Chabashira Sae, standing at the front of the room, wore the same look, a mixture of anger and something that almost resembled twisted satisfaction. Her voice lowered ominously as she spoke.

"…You're all such fools."

"Fools?"

No one in Class D had expected her to say something so blunt. Everyone immediately sensed a harshness in their homeroom teacher they hadn't encountered before.

"S-Sensei...?" Ike stammered, caught off guard by the sudden change in tone.

"I won't repeat myself," Chabashira continued coldly, ignoring the reactions around her. "The points for Class D have indeed been credited. That is a fact."

"But we didn't receive any points," the class's leader, Hirata Yōsuke, said quietly. "Isn't it possible the school made a mistake and forgot to transfer them to us?"

"Do you honestly think the school would allow such an oversight?"

Chabashira's words were sharp and decisive, cutting off any hope the students might have had. Her statement left no room for rebuttal.

Even though she claimed the points had been transferred, the reality was that no one had received anything. It was a contradiction that threw the entire class into a state of panic and confusion.

Only a few remained calm.

Hikigaya glanced around the room and noticed two people who seemed completely unbothered by the situation—Kōenji and Ayanokōji. They both sat there, unmoved, as if they had already figured it out.

Tsk, not even pretending to be confused, huh? Ayanokōji, that guy...

Hikigaya silently mocked them in his mind, while outwardly, he feigned the same confusion as the rest of the class.

Where had the points gone? Why hadn't they been credited?

Just as Hikigaya was amusing himself by blending into the chaos, Chabashira Sae, seemingly irritated by his nonchalant attitude, suddenly addressed him.

"Hikigaya, what's your take on the situation? Any thoughts?"

Why are you asking me?!

Hikigaya was stunned. He had been quietly enjoying himself, floating through the commotion like a fish in water, only to be ambushed by Chabashira's sudden question.

What are you, some kind of detective from a period drama? I'm not your sidekick!

Fortunately, most of the class was too preoccupied with their lack of points to notice the unusual dynamic between him and Chabashira.

Desperate to reduce his visibility, Hikigaya quickly blurted out an answer.

"Well... Chabashira-sensei said the points were credited, but no one received anything. Doesn't that mean... Class D got zero points this month?"

"…"

His words left the room in a stunned silence.

Every student was frozen, dumbfounded by Hikigaya's suggestion.

"Ha ha ha, so that's how it is, huh?"

Breaking the silence was none other than Kōenji Rokusuke. With an arrogant smirk, he propped his feet up on the desk and surveyed the class with disdain.

"As expected, our Class D is only worth a big, fat zero."

He even glanced at Hikigaya, as if seeking his approval.

Hikigaya wanted nothing to do with Kōenji and immediately turned away. Associating with someone like him could only lead to trouble.

Kōenji's remark, however, sparked a flurry of reactions from the rest of the class.

"What does that even mean?"

"But didn't the teacher say we'd get 100,000 points each month?"

"I've never heard of anything like this."

The students were either enlightened, confused, or outright refusing to accept this grim reality. The scene was a chaotic mess.

Watching it all unfold, Hikigaya couldn't help but smile.

In this moment, he felt a strange sense of satisfaction, like he was watching some kind of elaborate social experiment unfold. It reminded him of a certain villainous character in a certain masked rider show, as he observed the chaos and quietly thought to himself—

"So this is what makes humans so interesting."
