Kapitel 6: Are You Friends?

During Ayankouji Kiyotaka's awkward self-introduction, the rest of the class saw nothing exceptional about the boy. His introduction was notably unimpressive and even seemed rather dull.

However, Hikiagaya's assessment was much more critical: If he's not just a primitive from a jungle, then he's someone extremely arrogant and rebellious, hiding behind a facade.

Kiyotaka's overly dramatic and obvious display of false modesty led Hikigaya to believe the latter theory was more plausible.

After all, if it were Hikigaya giving his self-introduction, he might have appeared stiff, but he wouldn't deliberately craft a bad impression or seek attention from others.

Hikigaya had a clear self-awareness and a disinterest in most things outside himself, doing whatever he felt like without concern for others' opinions.

His desire to remain inconspicuous stemmed from a simple aversion to trouble, or perhaps, he just enjoyed his solitary moments...

Everything he did was just for personal satisfaction.

In stark contrast, Ayankouji Kiyotaka's behaviour was quite different.

— He seemed to view everyone else as fools.

His actions and demeanour appeared similar to Hikiagaya's, seeming unremarkable and ordinary at first glance.

In reality, the reasons behind their actions were completely opposite.

Though Hikigaya had little understanding of Kiyotaka and couldn't delve deeper into his thoughts, he had already labelled him as someone "definitely not to be messed with."

The threat level was at least dragon-class.

It was genuinely unsettling—were there too many monsters in this class?

"Nice to meet you, Ayankouji-kun. Like you, we all want to get along well with everyone, so let's do our best together," said Hirata Yousuke from the podium with a straightforward and cheerful attitude, quickly capturing the attention of many students and eliciting scattered applause.

People generally thought that Hirata's comforting words and his extraordinary personality gave Kiyotaka's failed introduction a certain meaning.

"He seems very ordinary."

Horikita Suzune also frowned at Kiyotaka's introduction. While she could understand that he might not be as simple as he appeared, she still couldn't see through his true nature.

She could only vaguely sense some minor discomfort...

Hikigaya said nothing. Deep down, he simply didn't want any contact with Kiyotaka and hoped to avoid even speaking to him in the future.

The intimidation from a dragon-class monster was indeed overwhelming.

As a weak and unproven knight, he shouldn't think of challenging the demon king.

He should patiently wait for Saitama-sensei to make his appearance.

Afterward, the students continued with their introductions.

But as the time for the entrance ceremony approached, Hirata had to abandon the remaining introductions and led the class to the gym where the ceremony would be held.

Hikigaya sighed with relief, glad he didn't have to give an introduction; otherwise, he might have added to his growing list of black marks...

As he left the classroom, he noticed Horikita Suzune waiting at the door, looking as stern and unapproachable as a prison guard.

What? Did I commit some grave offense?

Did I somehow make a mistake without realizing it?

Could someone please get me a ticket to immigrate to Germany right away!

"You look rather dissatisfied," Horikita Suzune remarked, her gaze fixed on Hikigaya. "You made me stay and listen to that boring self-introduction, so you should make it up to me now."

"Uh…"

Once she said that, Hikigaya knew he couldn't escape.

For the first time in his life, he felt this exhausted.

Talking to this sharp-tongued, cold woman seemed worse than chatting with his figurines. At least his figurines wouldn't argue back and always looked cheerful.

Apparently, talking to a girl should excite one according to the social butterflies, but he only felt dejected?

Damn, why couldn't he be a natural masochist?

This was truly not amusing at all.

Reluctantly, Hikigaya followed Suzune like a subordinate.

Even though he tried to find opportunities to escape, he ultimately had to go to the entrance ceremony and had no way out.

Suzune led him to the ceremony venue and, after a brief search, found Ayankouji Kiyotaka standing alone.

Well...

Seeing Kiyotaka alone evoked a certain sympathy in Hikigaya. He thought that perhaps, as fellow loners, they might become friends.

But recalling Kiyotaka's true nature, Hikigaya felt a strong aversion to the idea of being friends with him.

It was like a serious otaku refusing to watch reverse harem anime!

"You're Ayankouji Kiyotaka?" Suzune approached Kiyotaka without acknowledging Hikiagaya's reluctance. "I remember seeing you on the bus before."

"You are…"

Kiyotaka looked at Suzune with evident confusion. However, when he saw Hikigaya following her, a flicker of recognition appeared in his eyes.

"You're... the person who gave up their seat," Kiyotaka said with a somewhat peculiar reaction, "I didn't expect you to do that."

"What, is having compassion a problem?"

Why does everyone ask about me giving up my seat? Is it that unusual?

It happens in the news all the time!

Hikigaya, already feeling a strong dislike for Kiyotaka, wasn't in the mood to be polite. He spoke directly, "So, is this how you normally introduce yourself? It's far more dynamic compared to your earlier wooden performance."

"…"

Kiyotaka seemed surprised by Hikiagaya's immediate hostility.

He then glanced slowly at the two of them and said, "Sorry, let me reintroduce myself. My name is Ayankouji Kiyotaka."

"Horikita Suzune," Suzune responded coldly, showing no frustration that Kiyotaka hadn't recognized her.

"And this person?"

"Hikigaya Hachiman," Hikigaya replied reluctantly.

Kiyotaka then looked from Hikigaya to Suzune and asked, "Are you two friends?"

"No."

"Nah."

"Is that so?"

Both Suzune and Hikigaya denied Kiyotaka's question.

"Then are you a couple?" Kiyotaka asked, though he didn't think it was likely.

"Are you looking to die?"

"No, no, that's way too scary!"

Kiyotaka's question prompted a terrible reaction from both Suzune and Hikigaya.

This only made Kiyotaka look even more puzzled, as he remained unclear about their situation.
