A week after Hagrid got the dragon, Quirrell returned to work at Hogwarts.
When Ethan saw him in the hall, he almost didn't recognize Quirrell. His skin was loose and an unhealthy white, and his back was hunched, making him look like a man in his sixties. His left arm and part of his shoulder had been replaced with a silver metal arm, which was truly miserable.
In just one year, Quirrell had undergone three changes.
In the Defense Against the Dark Arts class, the little lions of Gryffindor couldn't suppress their smiles. If it weren't for the wrong occasion, they would have held a banquet to celebrate.
Originally, Snape was harsh. After Neville's incident, Gryffindor's Defense Against the Dark Arts class became more difficult than Potions. If you couldn't answer the questions, you would lose points and be ridiculed. Failing in practice didn't just mean losing points; it meant ridicule too.
It could be said that the little lions were having a rough time. Now, being compared to trolls was considered Snape's way of being courteous.
This also caused Gryffindor's house score to always hover between 50 points and zero points.
Professor McGonagall couldn't say much about this. After all, the little lions of her house had spread stories about the professor after doing something wrong, making Snape a laughing stock for a while. This was indeed too much.
Although she punished the group of little wizards who spread rumors, the damage was done, and Snape's kneeling became the hottest topic at Hogwarts.
Now that Snape had taken his revenge, what else could she do?
As long as they didn't lose all their points, she let it go.
Professor McGonagall chose to keep quiet.
"Today, we will learn how to resist dark magic, but the prerequisite to resisting dark magic is understanding it," Quirrell's gloomy and hoarse voice echoed in the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom.
At this point, the little wizards noticed that not only had Quirrell's appearance changed drastically, but he also no longer stuttered when speaking, and the garlic smell was gone from both his body and the classroom.
"Professor Quirrell, defence against dark arts doesn't seem to be something we should be learning now," a little wizard said, standing up without raising his hand or getting Quirrell's consent.
Anyway, Quirrell had always been cowardly in class, reading from the textbook without deducting points, so naturally, no one followed his rules, and everyone was used to the freedom.
Although the name of the first-year Hogwarts textbook is "Dark Power: A Guide to Self-Defense," the content is more about avoiding harm from magical creatures rather than resisting dark magic.
To be precise, this is what you learn in the lower grades at Hogwarts. It's not until third grade, after finishing the study of XXXXX magical creatures, that students start learning about dark magic.
Quirrell glanced at the little wizard and motioned for him to sit down.
"I am very grateful to Professor Snape for teaching during this period. He taught well. I think you have mastered most of the textbook content. Now, I will teach you some additional knowledge."
Hearing Quirrell's explanation, the young wizards were excited. Snape had left, but Quirrell hadn't given up and was now teaching advanced material. Was it because he felt pressured by Professor Snape and decided to step up? Only Ethan felt something was wrong.
It was hard to say if this person was even Quirrell. Maybe Voldemort was controlling his body, having found a way to replenish his vitality. Another possibility was that this wasn't Quirrell at all, but another fool manipulated by Voldemort, disguised as Quirrell using Polyjuice Potion, and continuing to plot for the Philosopher's Stone.
Quirrell, noticing the stirred emotions in the classroom, raised his voice slightly to address the young wizards: "Be quiet. When it comes to dark magic, the first thing that comes to mind is the three Unforgivable Curses—extremely evil, extremely cruel, but very powerful dark magic. Although using them on a person leads to imprisonment in Azkaban, dark wizards still like to use them."
When Quirrell mentioned the Unforgivable Curses, the classroom suddenly fell silent. Most young wizards had an ingrained fear of these curses. After glancing around, Quirrell continued, "I wonder if any student can answer: what are the three Unforgivable Curses, and what are their corresponding spells?"
"No one can answer my question?" Quirrell looked towards Slytherin and Ravenclaw, his tone tinged with disappointment.
Ethan could see that although Cassandra didn't feel any fear, she didn't intend to stand up and answer the question. After all, the three Unforgivable Curses were nearly taboo at Hogwarts. Normal young wizards didn't talk about them at all.
Ethan admired Quirrell's audacity. How did he have the nerve to discuss these at Hogwarts? Even if he wasn't directly teaching the Unforgivable Curses like Barty Crouch Jr. did in fourth grade while impersonating Moody, this would still draw Dumbledore's attention to him! He wanted to steal the Philosopher's Stone, yet he was so high-profile—truly bold!
"Student Adrian, do you know?" Quirrell walked up to Ethan, giving him an encouraging look. Why was the content of this class directed at him? At first, Ethan thought it was aimed at Harry. But what was this guy trying to do?
"Student Adrian!" Seeing that Ethan hadn't reacted, Quirrell couldn't help but raise his voice.
"Killing Curse, Avada Kedavra!"
"Imperius Curse, Imperio!"
"Cruciatus Curse, Crucio!"
"Absolutely correct, Student Adrian, Ravenclaw earns ten points!"
Hearing Ethan's answer, a smile finally appeared on Quirrell's long, pale face. But none of the students below cheered, not even the Ravenclaws. Ethan even noticed a few young wizards looking at him with fearful eyes.
Voldemort, oh Voldemort, haven't you been beaten enough? Why don't you just behave?
This class ended with the explanation of the three Unforgivable Curses. Quirrell didn't explain the specific usage and spent most of the time introducing their power. As for how to guard against the three Unforgivable Curses, Quirrell didn't even mention it.
Ethan packed up his textbooks and prepared to leave with his roommates.
"Ethan, you shouldn't say those spells in public in the future. Why did Professor Quirrell ask you to answer that question? You know those spells aren't easy to say," Hermione ran up to Ethan, complaining about Quirrell. She was worried that one day, she'd have to visit Ethan in Azkaban.
Cassandra, who was passing by, gave a mysterious smile. She was much more insightful than this lion. Ethan was good at extremely difficult dark magic like the Fiendfyre Curse. Did Hermione think the three Unforgivable Curses were easier? Only this silly lion was clueless!
"I just recited the spells, not used them. What does it matter? Many people know them, but they..." Ethan was complaining when Quirrell's voice suddenly interrupted from behind.
"Student Adrian, come to my office. I have something to tell you!"
Ethan frowned. What on earth was Quirrell thinking? Why was he focusing on him instead of the Philosopher's Stone? And in class, shouldn't his target be Harry, the saviour?
After saying goodbye to his roommates, Ethan followed Quirrell to see what he was up to.
Upon arriving at Quirrell's office, Ethan got straight to the point.
"Professor Quirrell, why did you call me here?"
"I want to ask how you've progressed with the notebook I gave you last semester. If you don't understand anything, you can ask me," Quirrell pretended to be a caring teacher, but his overdrawn, pale face didn't resemble a kind teacher at all.
"Thank you, Professor Quirrell, for the notebook. It's been very useful to me. I've learned all the magic recorded in it."
"Student Adrian, you have a great talent for dark magic!" Quirrell sighed. Through Voldemort, he knew there were two more advanced spells in the notebook meant to encourage Ethan to seek guidance. However, Ethan had figured them out on his own.
This notebook had three purposes:
The first was to slowly lead Ethan into the abyss of dark magic.
The second was to deepen the connection between them, especially when Ethan sought advice. After a few interactions, they would become familiar with each other. Unfortunately, the plan had failed.
The third was to test Ethan. Hogwarts didn't encourage the study of dark magic. However, if he could practice it, it wouldn't violate the rules. If Ethan had given the notebook to Dumbledore or Flitwick, it would indicate that Ethan was difficult to win over.
But since Ethan hadn't handed it over, he was still a viable candidate to be swayed. Given Ethan's talent, he could become a valuable ally among the Death Eaters.
"Thank you for the compliment, Professor. I just spend more time on this; it's not really talent," Ethan said modestly.
"Then would you like to learn about real dark magic?" Quirrell asked, pulling out his wand and pointing it at a spider in the corner.
"For example, the three Unforgivable Curses, Avada Kedavra, Imperius Curse, and Cruciatus Curse!"
A dark green light gushed out from the tip of the wand and hit the target in the blink of an eye.
The spider's body was dyed green and fell to the ground silently.
"Want to learn? I can teach you!"
Quirrell's bewitching voice sounded in Ethan's ears.
"Professor Quirrell, how can you use the Unforgivable Curses in Hogwarts?"
Ethan took two steps back and looked at Quirrell with a surprised expression.
To be honest, this Avada Kedavra is really average; it is not controlled by Voldemort himself.
"Ethan, you have to remember that learning and using the Unforgivable Curses are not illegal, but using them against wizards is illegal, understand?"
"You are different from other students. You are more talented and willing to work hard on this. Such a good student is naturally more likely to receive special care from the teacher."
Ethan's panic was within Quirrell's expectations, but Ethan's calm or enthusiastic reaction was a bit unexpected.
"When you have thought it over, you can come to me at any time. If my offer is valid during this semester, you can also use this."
Immediately, Quirrell opened the drawer, took out a note, and handed it to Ethan.
After receiving the note, Ethan said goodbye to Quirrell and left the office.
"Master, is it really worth risking exposure to win over this little wizard?"
Quirrell muttered to himself in the empty office.
"Stupid, you know nothing. Do you think Dumbledore has never doubted you? Even Snape can sense that something is wrong with you."
Voldemort's hoarse voice sounded from the back of Quirrell's head.
"And this little wizard, with excellent talent and a great interest in dark magic, will be my best helper in the future."
