Kapitel 3: A stuck traveling merchant

So, this month marks the election phase for the governor's seat in Isselburg, and the city is on lockdown for the next two weeks. No one can enter or leave, as the royal family has arrived to oversee the proceedings.

I first noticed when I heard cheers erupting down the main road, loud enough to carry for kilometers. That's when I remembered what Juan had told me earlier in the day—the gates would close once the royal family entered the city.

"Now what?" I mumbled to myself. With nowhere to go, I started heading back to the inn. But when I tried to enter my room, the manager stopped me at the door.

"Sir, your stay is over," the manager said curtly. "The bell has rung. If you want to extend your stay, it'll be 15 bronze coins until tomorrow."

I hesitated. Juan had left me with two gold coins and three silver, but I knew I couldn't just burn through them—they were meant to be my emergency funds. Then an idea struck me. What if I start buying goods and selling them on the streets? It seemed like a good plan, though risky.

I declined the manager's offer, thanking him for letting me stay with Juan, and walked out of the inn. I needed a way to get started on this business idea, but first, I would need some kind of permit to legally sell within the city.

I wandered the streets, searching for the acting governor, and eventually spotted the knight who had let Juan and me through the gates the day before.

"Excuse me, sir," I called out.

The knight turned, then smiled in recognition. "Oh, I remember you! You're Juan's new friend, right? Ah, but you should know Juan already left the city this morning. Don't worry though, he'll be back after the election. He has this habit of leaving people behind in cities and forgetting about them."

I chuckled nervously. "Yeah, I've noticed. But no, I actually have a question for you. Do you know where I can find the acting governor? I need to ask him about starting a business."

The knight raised an eyebrow. "A business, huh? You're in luck! I'm in charge of the business sector here, as well as the gates. You don't need to see the governor; I can help you out with that."

"Really? That's great!" I said, surprised at my luck.

"Yeah, all you need is a permit. It'll cost you three silver coins for a five-day permit or five gold coins for a six-year contract. Come by my office, and we'll sort everything out."

We headed to his office, and as we talked, he explained the currency system. A silver coin was worth 20 bronze coins, a gold coin was worth 50 silver coins, and a gold bar was a whopping 500 gold coins.

I opted for the five-day permit, paying him three silver coins. With the permit in hand, I made my way to the coin changer's area to break one of my gold coins into silver. Now, with 50 silver coins, I was ready to start my business.

I couldn't help but think how generous Juan had been, leaving me with enough money to get started even though we had only known each other for a day.

Current balance:

1 gold coin

50 silver coins

Now, it was time to figure out what I could sell that would catch the attention of Isselburg's people.
