Chapter 45: Sevi's Room
Noemi glanced back briefly as she darted deeper into the forest, Carla still in her arms. The faint sounds of shouting and stomping grew fainter with each step, though her sharp instincts warned her that it wouldn't take long for them to track the trail.
Carla stirred slightly in her arms, her lips parting as if to speak, but the words didn't come. The fight had drained her strength, leaving her too weak to do anything but cling to Noemi.
Noemi finally reached the concealed spot where Sevi was waiting and without breaking stride, she slowed just enough to avoid startling him.
Before Sevi had time to react, Noemi grabbed him by the arm and immediately hoisted him over her other shoulder in one smooth motion. He was startled at first, his body tensing, but he instantly recognized the firm, familiar grip. Noemi.
"Noemi? Wait, I can run! I don't need to--" Sevi yelped, flailing slightly.
But before Sevi can finish talking, he was immediately interrupted.
"You'll slow me down," Noemi interrupted,
"And we don't have time for this."
Sevi squirmed but quickly realized it was futile. With Carla still cradled in one arm and Sevi slung over her shoulder, Noemi took off again, her movements fluid and precise despite the added weight.
The sound of the Red Crescent members' search seemed to fade into the background as Noemi carried them farther.
The edge of the forest was in sight, and with a final burst of effort, Noemi crossed the last stretch of open ground, breaking through into the area near the school dorms. She didn't slow until they were well beyond the tree line, safe for the moment.
Sevi let out a relieved breath as he was gently set down.
"We're near the dorms," he said, his voice low but urgent. "We should head to my room. It's the safest place right now. No one else is there, and Noemi... your dorm might not be secure anymore."
Noemi's eyes narrowed as she glanced around, her instincts still on high alert. She nodded, her grip tightening slightly on Carla as she shifted to walk behind Sevi. "Lead the way."
As they moved swiftly through the grounds, Sevi couldn't help but feel the weight of the situation pressing down on him.
'We are not safe yet, not completely,' Sevi thought as he quickened his pace, eager to get to his room where they could at least have a moment of peace.
Reaching the entrance to the dorm, Sevi hesitated for a brief moment, checking the hallway for any signs of movement.
It was quiet, the late hour ensuring that few people were around.
'Okay, all clear,'
Satisfied that it was clear, he pushed open the door and ushered Noemi inside.
"Let's go," Sevi whispered, leading the way through the hall. His room was at the far end, quiet and tucked away from the more heavily trafficked areas of the dorm.
When they reached his door, Sevi quickly unlocked it and ushered Noemi and Carla inside. Once inside, he made sure to close and lock the door behind them.
Sevi looked over at Noemi, who was still holding Carla.
"We're here. You can set her down on my bed," he said softly, his concern evident in his tone. Carla was still unconscious but breathing, her exhaustion and injuries clear.
Noemi nodded, gently setting the unconscious woman down on Sevi's bed.
Sevi then glanced at Noemi, his concern deepened as he noticed the strain in Noemi's posture, even though she had managed to carry both him and Carla with ease.
"Noemi," Sevi said softly, his voice edged with worry.
"How are you? You carried both of us... Are you okay?"
Noemi waved off his concern with a faint, dismissive gesture, her expression unreadable.
"It's easy. I've carried heavier loads before." Her tone was calm, but there was a flicker of exhaustion in her eyes.
'...Lies,' Sevi thought as he noticed the flicker on Noemi's eyes.
Sevi then knelt beside Carla, carefully checking her pulse and gauging her breathing. The soft rise and fall of her chest gave him some comfort, but as he gently touched her skin, he realized just how cold she had become.
"Noemi, her condition's worsening," Sevi said, his voice tense.
'I need to prevent it from worsening,' Sevi thought as he closed his eyes to activate his skill.
"First Aid (B-)"
A faint pulse of energy surged through his hands as Sevi invoked his healing skill. His fingers glowed briefly with a soft, blue light as he placed them on Carla's chest, near her heart. He felt the familiar warmth of his skill moving through her, attempting to stabilize her weakened body.
The coldness of her skin began to ease slightly, but her pulse remained weak, irregular.
Sevi grimaced.
"My First Aid skill is good, but it wasn't a cure-all. It could stabilize her for now, but it wouldn't be enough to heal Carla's deeper injuries and exhaustion." Sevi said to which Noemi listened, she then reached out for something in her pocket.
"This should help," Noemi said quietly.
"It's a healing potion."
Sevi nodded in appreciation as Noemi handed him the healing potion.
He uncorked the vial and gently tipped it over Carla's lips, allowing the liquid to flow into her mouth.
The potion was thick and shimmering, with a faint warmth that seemed to spread through Carla's body as soon as it touched her.
Within moments, the color in Carla's face returned to a healthy hue, and the irregularity of her pulse began to smooth out. The faint, persistent coldness in her skin went away, and she took a deeper, more steady breath.
Her eyelids fluttered slightly, but she remained unconscious.
"She's stable," Sevi murmured, looking up at Noemi with a mixture of relief and exhaustion.
"She's going to be alright now. Just... needs rest."
But as soon as Sevi spoke those words, something strange began to happen.
"What... What is this?"
