A few days after our visit to the Cobra Kai dojo, the Halloween dance was finally here. I found myself at the LaRusso household, in Sam's room, as we were getting ready.
"So, how do I look?" she asked, twirling in her Lakers cheerleader outfit.
"You look so beautiful," I replied, genuinely impressed.
She laughed, "Thanks, but you look like a dork."
I pouted, glancing down at my costume. I was wearing a striking red samurai armor complete with a helmet adorned with deer horns. It was awesome, and I knew I had the best costume at the dance. "Why do you say that?" I started, but before I could continue, she kissed me, and I melted into the moment.
Our kiss was interrupted by Amanda, who called from downstairs, "It's time to go! Hurry up!"
"We're coming, Mom!" Sam shouted back, pulling away. She pecked me on the cheek and helped me adjust my mask. We headed downstairs where Daniel and Amanda were waiting for us.
"You two look so cute together," Amanda said with a smile.
"Let's go; it's getting late," Daniel added, ushering us out the door.
As we got into the car, Amanda gave us a serious look. "I know it's inevitable, but try to stay away from alcohol."
"Will do, Mom," Sam replied, rolling her eyes playfully. Amanda sighed, and we continued on our way.
At the dance, we mingled with Sam's friends and danced to the energetic music. The atmosphere was electric, with smoke machines filling the room with a mysterious haze. As I twirled Sam around, I noticed a skeleton figure moving through the smoke with a swagger that caught my attention. It was Miguel, but unless you knew him, it would be hard to recognize him in his costume. He cast a lingering gaze at Sam, one that made my blood boil. I shot him a freezing glare, and he quickly looked away.
He made his way over to Eli and Demetri, who were dressed as a sorcerer and a doctor, respectively. Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted Kyler and his friends heading toward the bathroom, and I sensed trouble brewing. "I'm going to the bathroom," I told Sam, and she nodded in understanding.
Meanwhile, Daniel, who had been chatting with a teacher, noticed Miguel, Eli, and Demetri. Flashbacks flooded his mind, images of Johnny and his friends in skeleton costumes beating him up. He handed his drink to the teacher and said, "Hold on a second," before following the kids. As he walked through the halls, he spotted a Cobra Kai pamphlet stuck to the wall.
He continued down the corridor and found Johnny plastering another pamphlet up. "What do you think you're doing?" Daniel asked, annoyance seeping into his voice.
"Promoting my business. Why don't you try minding yours?" Johnny shot back.
"Minding mine?" Daniel scoffed. "This is ridiculous. We can both be adults here. I just don't see why you'd want to bring back Cobra Kai after what your sensei did to you."
"Because I'm not Kreese, and the lessons worked," Johnny replied defiantly.
"Strike first, no mercy, real good lessons," Daniel retorted.
But Daniel's attention shifted as he saw Miguel and his friends being followed by Kyler and his crew into the bathroom. He opened his mouth to say something, but I sprinted past him, calling out, "Got it under control, Sensei. Continue your conversation!"
Daniel thought, What has he done this time? but he continued arguing with Johnny. I dashed into the bathroom just in time to see Miguel's trio cornered. They were trying to escape, but it was clear they were trapped. Miguel assumed a fighting stance, and Kyler sneered, "Today is the day you die." The other two cowered behind him, and it looked like a fight was about to break out.
I stepped in, smirking. "Oh, the big scary bully is attacking some little kids."
Kyler recognized my voice and fearfully said, "What are you doing here? Leave; it's none of your business."
"No, it's my business, big guy," I replied, stepping forward. I punched the fat kid in the stomach, and he crumpled to the ground.
As he struggled to get up, he whimpered, "We're sorry! We're not going to do that again!" The three of them bolted out of the bathroom.
Kyler lunged at me, but I caught his arm, spun him around, and kicked him hard into the nearby wall. I slowly approached him as he stumbled back, fear evident in his eyes. He slipped and fell, scrambling to get away. I stood over him and said, "Boo!" He screamed, jumped up, and ran out of the bathroom in a panic.
Demetri stared at me in disbelief. "OMG, how did you do that?"
"I learn karate at Miyagi-Do Karate. If you want, I can persuade my sensei to take you as his students," I offered.
Miguel chimed in, "No, they're coming to Cobra Kai."
Demetri pondered, "I'll think about it."
"Okay, come find me if Kyler does anything from now on," I said, leaving the bathroom and making my way back to the dance.
The rest of the night was a blast. I enjoyed every moment with Sam, dancing and laughing until it was time to head home. Once we arrived, we went up to her bedroom and lay down on her bed.
Turning to her, I asked, "What did you do today?"
"Nothing much. What about you?" she replied.
"Nothing much, just dancing, drinking, and taking down bullies," I said casually.
"What? When? Why didn't you tell me?" she exclaimed, concern etched on her face.
"I took care of it in a minute; it was barely a beatdown," I reassured her.
"Well, I'm glad you're not hurt," she said, pushing me onto my back and kissing me deeply.
As I kissed her back, I thought, Everything is going according to plan, and I let Sam pull me into her world, feeling more connected to her than ever.
