Heath glanced sideways at Jana, resisting the urge to ask if her punishment was serious. He knew that if he asked, Jana's rhetorical tactics would leave him overwhelmed, so he abandoned the idea.
"Maple!" Heath's eyes lit up, and he waved towards the back.
Jana instantly let go, her expression turning serious as if she was about to say something. However, before she could react, Heath slipped away into the cafeteria.
"Trainer, what punishment was that human female talking about? You seemed quite terrified," Zorua, perched on Heath's head, asked curiously.
"I don't know, but it's definitely nothing proper," Heath replied, stretching his neck. It was about time to start preparing dinner for the Officer Jennys.
Zorua lay on Heath's head thoughtfully, her little eyes gleaming with excitement, though it was unclear what she was thinking.
As Heath finished preparing the steaming hot meals, the Officer Jennys returned to the dormitory area and began to eat in the cafeteria. Heath, however, noticed a somber atmosphere that was unusual.
Typically, the Officer Jennys ate happily, chatting and laughing, but today they were unusually silent. Even the few who spoke did so in hushed tones.
This puzzled Heath. There had been no major incidents in Viridian City today. Due to Giovanni's presence, Viridian City usually had the lowest crime rate in the Kanto region.
While other cities struggled with chaos, Viridian City enjoyed a peaceful life. This meant that the Officer Jennys here usually had an easier job.
The source of Heath's curiosity became clear when Maple walked in. Her expression was grim, her face stern, exuding an aura that warned people to stay away.
"Maple, what's wrong?" Heath asked, scooping dinner into Maple's plate while expressing his concern.
She had been fine earlier in the afternoon, but now she seemed so burdened.
"Nothing," Maple replied curtly, taking her food and walking away without losing her temper.
Heath stroked his chin, sensing trouble. The last time Maple was this angry was when Arcanine had a stomachache.
But even then, her anger hadn't been as intense as it was now. What could have happened to upset Maple so much?
Heath knew that asking Maple directly wouldn't help; she was notoriously tight-lipped and wouldn't reveal anything unless she wanted to.
But Heath had other ways.
"Jana, do you know why Maple is upset today?" Heath asked, sitting next to Jana with his meal. This was a privilege of his.
As the only male in the Officer Jenny dormitory area, Heath was treated like a little brother by all the Officer Jennys, and he found this lifestyle quite enjoyable.
"I don't know, but I do know she went to Mr. Adams' house this afternoon," Jana replied while eating her curry beef rice, her favorite dish that she ordered every time.
Heath pondered. He knew Mr. Adams, though he had never served him. Mr. Adams was the owner of the largest supermarket in Viridian City, and his son had caused chaos by losing a Charmander.
However, Heath didn't understand why Maple was so upset. Even if the Charmander had run away, it wasn't the Officer Jennys' responsibility.
With these doubts, Heath finished his dinner quietly and followed Maple back to the dormitory. As soon as they returned, Maple stormed into the gym, and soon the sounds of punching a sandbag filled the room.
"Arcanine, what happened to Maple?" Heath asked, stroking Arcanine's fur with concern.
"Arroo~" Arcanine shook its head, looking troubled.
"This big dog says it can't tell you," Zorua dutifully translated.
Heath felt a headache coming on. It seemed there was no way to find out. Jana had made it clear that only Maple had visited Mr. Adams' house this afternoon, so it must be related to the supermarket owner.
Shaking his head, Heath decided to go to the kitchen and prepare the ingredients needed for the next day.
He took out some flour, placed his phone nearby, and turned on the radio mode, kneading dough while listening to the broadcast.
"Welcome to FM965, I'm your old friend, host Brian. Today, let's see what's happening in Viridian City..." Heath calmly kneaded the dough. His phone had no entertainment functions.
For Heath, the greatest entertainment was listening to the radio and the ghost stories of the Pokémon world.
Yes, when Heath first got his phone, he listened to the radio at night and discovered that this world had ghost stories, though they were somewhat peculiar.
It seemed that anything involving Pokémon turned bizarre, reminding Heath of the things he learned in the first subject today.
The last ghost story Heath heard was about a Bulbasaur encountering a ghost at home, which turned out to be a Gastly playing tricks, killing the horror instantly.
However, the League strictly monitored Ghost-type Pokémon, with some species banned from human settlements because they could be deadly.
"The case of Mr. Adams' missing Charmander has been perfectly resolved. A kind citizen found Charmander and returned it to Mr. Adams' son after a battle, earning a reward of 20,000 Pokédollars," the radio announced.
Heath froze. The Charmander had been captured? If it was caught, why was Maple still so angry?
"Zorua, what do you think?" Heath asked reflexively.
"Hmm? Think about what?" Zorua looked around curiously, seeing nothing.
Heath scratched his nose, realizing his old habit had returned. He forgot that no one in this world would understand his jokes.
