What does one generally learn for a driving test? Heath hadn't thought about this before, but upon arriving at the Viridian City driving school, he realized that the driving test in this world seemed somewhat familiar.
The first thing Heath had to study was the first module, which involved learning various signs and driving knowledge. However, since this was the world of Pokémon, some of the signs and knowledge had peculiar differences.
"What kind of question is this?" Heath looked at the textbook he received, feeling both amused and confused. It showed a circular sign with a prohibition symbol.
So far, everything seemed normal, but the prohibited icon inside the sign depicted a car, apparently flying.
Combining the two icons, Heath thought this might mean no flying cars allowed.
However, upon seeing the options, Heath realized he might be mistaken.
[Multiple Choice: What does this sign (as shown) mean?]
A: No flying cars allowed here
B: No using Flying-type Pokémon to fly with cars
C: No using the Fly move in cars
D: No driving after using Fly
"Could it be B?" Heath pondered, thinking this was the most likely answer. Turning the page to check, he found that it indeed was the correct answer.
Heath thought this question was already quite absurd—who would think of using Flying-type Pokémon to fly with a car? The demands on the Flying-type Pokémon would be enormous. But then he saw the next case study, and he was even more baffled.
This time, it was an icon showing a Slowpoke with an X over it, and nothing else.
The options were also strange.
[Multiple Choice: What does this sign (as shown) mean?]
A: Do not let Slowpoke drive
B: Slowpoke crossing area, slow down
C: Slowpoke wants to sing "Dame Dame" to you
D: Slowpoke checkpoint, proceed slowly
Heath covered his face. What kind of bizarre questions were these? Why did learning to drive involve interpreting such weird pictures?
"It should be B, right? After all, Slowpoke can't drive and wouldn't have a checkpoint," Heath thought, but upon seeing the answer, he was stunned.
The correct answer was indeed A!!
Heath wanted to grab the test designer and ask, what kind of city or league would allow a Slowpoke to drive? Why not say Psyduck drives?
But then, Heath saw that the explanation for the question even showed a Psyduck making the X gesture.
"So there really are Psyduck driving!" Heath felt like pulling his hair out. The driving test in the Pokémon world was just too crazy.
Heath then faced a series of bizarre questions, each one more strange than the last, making his scalp tingle. Although, other than the Pokémon-related questions, the rest were within normal understanding.
Despite this, Heath felt that finishing this thick book of the first module might take until tomorrow; it was impossible to finish today.
Moreover, sitting in a classroom and studying seriously brought Heath back to his school days, enduring the rigorous education system without any reduction in workload, with holiday homework measured by weight.
"This stuff really makes you sleepy," Heath yawned. He felt like a typical bad student, wanting to sleep as soon as he saw the textbook, with no study efficiency at all.
Stretching, Heath noticed he was sitting in a classroom filled with people taking the first module exam, both humans and Pokémon. A Kadabra among them caught Heath's attention.
Kadabra appearing here wasn't surprising. In fact, Kadabra appearing anywhere wasn't surprising, given their special curiosity for knowledge.
Rumor had it that Silph Co.'s research department was staffed with Alakazam researchers, which was why their technology was so advanced.
Heath thought he wouldn't be surprised to see Kadabra and Alakazam in any laboratory, but what intrigued him was Kadabra's learning method.
This textbook had over three hundred pages, couldn't be taken out, and had to be studied in the classroom. If you wanted to take it out, you had to buy it, and it cost 523 League Coins, which was quite expensive.
But Kadabra's study method was unique—it rapidly flipped through the book page by page. If Heath didn't know it was Kadabra reading, he might have thought it was some kind of speed reading class.
After all, quantum wave speed reading classes were once popular, where people paid to be fooled, making Heath deeply appreciate the importance of compulsory education.
But if it was Kadabra...
Heath thought it was quite likely, given Kadabra's inherent intelligence.
"Do you have a question, human?" Kadabra asked as Heath curiously watched it speed-read.
Embarrassed, Heath waved his hand. He couldn't say he was bored and decided to watch Kadabra's learning method to pass the time.
"Are you here for the driving test too? Would you like to study with me? I've summarized a study method that might help," Kadabra offered warmly.
Heath hesitated but then moved over to sit opposite Kadabra, genuinely curious about its study method.
Kadabra had no issue with Heath's approach and cheerfully shared its study technique.
"This method might not be very effective, sorry," Kadabra said humbly.
Heath was speechless. Kadabra's method was highly effective and usable by humans. Heath found his memorization speed increased significantly after learning it. Yet, Kadabra considered this method not very effective?
Heath suddenly understood why excessive humility could come off as showing off. Looking at the genuinely humble Kadabra, Heath felt like he was watching a show-off.
