"Mito, that outfit really suits you," Izuna teased as they walked out of the Uchiha camp, glancing at her ninja attire.
In her previous plain white kimono, Mito exuded the gentle charm of a noble lady, much like a master's wife. But in her tight-fitting ninja uniform, which perfectly outlined her figure, there was an added layer of allure and confidence.
Mito, walking beside him, didn't respond verbally. Instead, she kicked him in the calf, her silent way of expressing annoyance.
Traversing the rugged terrain of Mountain was manageable for a small group, but if a large force of several hundred men attempted it, they'd risk detection by enemy sentient ninjas—one of the most frustrating aspects of warfare in the ninja world.
The sensing abilities of powerful ninjas often exceeded even the Byakugan of the Hyūga clan. At the top of that list was Senju Tobirama, known for his extraordinary sensory powers, which were strong enough to sense battles from miles away.
Though Tobirama wasn't yet at his future peak, his abilities were still formidable. And, while the Uzumaki weren't primarily known as sensory ninjas, many of them had innate abilities far beyond ordinary shinobi. Mito, in particular, possessed the strongest sensory capabilities of anyone Izuna had ever seen.
Her skills even outstripped Tobirama's, a fact Izuna witnessed firsthand during their skirmish two years ago.
That was why Izuna devised a plan based on Mito's extraordinary perception. There was no doubt that he intended to use Mito's abilities to help deal with the Senju. Understandably, as a member of the Uzumaki clan, she was hesitant to help him against their allies.
But when a woman is in love with a man, she can be willing to do things she never imagined.
After wrestling with her conscience, Mito finally agreed to help Izuna.
As they scaled another hill, Izuna raised a hand, signaling for Mito to stop as he surveyed the area ahead. They were approaching the densely forested mountains where the Senju forces were stationed.
Just as Uchiha Shinchihi had reported, the area ahead was covered in complex terrain, making it an ideal location for hiding an army.
"Mito, can you sense them?" Izuna asked quietly.
Mito nodded, her slender fingers weaving through a series of hand seals. The cinnabar mark on her forehead glowed as she released her chakra, and the strands of hair by her ears floated slightly as her perception expanded outward.
Izuna stood nearby, watching in silence. Mito's sensory field extended for dozens of miles, rendering the trees and mountains that would obscure the Sharingan completely useless.
After about ten minutes, Mito opened her eyes and pointed in several directions. "There are 120 people at 10 o'clock, 22 kilometers away. At 2 o'clock, 90 people, 24 kilometers out. And toward the river valley, 150 people stationed 33 kilometers from here."
Senju Kawaragi, the old fox, had divided his forces to fight a guerrilla war. Of the 400 men stationed at the main camp, the rest were scattered in smaller groups, ready to launch surprise flanking attacks if the Uchiha army advanced.
But since they wanted to play guerrilla warfare, Izuna decided he would dismantle their outposts one by one.
Izuna cracked his knuckles, the sound sharp in the night air.
"Hurry up. The Senju have their own sensory ninjas, and they might have noticed my chakra by now," Mito warned.
Unlike the Byakugan, which can see from a distance without detection, the chakra released by sensory ninjas is noticeable to other sensory ninjas. Though Senju Tobirama wasn't present, other capable sensors might sense her activities.
However, very few among the Senju realized they were being monitored. Even those who briefly noticed something odd dismissed it as an illusion, unless they were as skilled as Tobirama. Kawaragi, though powerful, lacked such sensory capabilities.
With Mito's help, Izuna bypassed all Senju patrols and slipped unnoticed into the camp where Kawaragi had stationed his scattered troops.
One of the larger outposts was near a creek in the valley. According to Mito's senses, there were 150 people stationed here—the largest group among the scattered strongholds.
"You stay here. I'll handle this," Izuna whispered, leaning close to Mito.
"But there are hundreds of people over there," Mito said, her worry evident.
"Didn't you sense that the strongest among them are just elite jōnin?" Izuna replied confidently.
While Mito's perception couldn't gauge exact strength, it could estimate chakra levels. The camp's strongest defenders were merely elite jōnin, not much of a threat for Izuna.
"Don't expect me to save you if you get into trouble," Mito muttered, pursing her lips.
Izuna chuckled, knowing her words masked her genuine concern.
The camp was guarded by sentries stationed at two observation towers by the gate. There were four guards in total.
Whoosh!
Suddenly, the guards noticed something in the air—a set of kunai flying toward them.
Clang!
The sound of metal striking metal echoed as the guards deflected or dodged the projectiles. A three-pronged kunai embedded itself in the post behind one of the guards.
"Is this... a kunai?" one guard muttered, frowning as he inspected the strange weapon.
The realization dawned on him too late. Before he could react, Izuna appeared in front of him in a blur of motion. Pulling the kunai from the post, Izuna swiped it across the guard's throat, silencing him instantly.
Within moments, all four guards were dead, felled by Izuna's mastery of the Flying Thunder God Technique.
From his vantage point, Izuna looked down at the camp. He reached into his pouch, pulling out more Flying Thunder God kunai, which he flung in all directions, scattering them throughout the camp.
Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!
It was late at night, and most of the camp was fast asleep. But the kunai clattering to the ground alerted the few patrolling ninjas.
"What's going on...?"
Before the guard could finish his sentence, Izuna appeared like a specter, Rasengan already forming in his hand. The swirling ball of chakra smashed into the guard, sending him flying into a nearby tent and waking the slumbering Senju forces.
"Enemy attack! Everyone up!"
"Is it the Uchiha?"
"Damn it! What are the patrols doing? Someone actually got in here!"
Panic spread as more Senju ninjas scrambled to their feet, but by then, Izuna had already begun his assault.
