"This old bastard!" Madara shouted angrily.
The war had dragged on for almost a month, and Senju Kawaragi had been nowhere to be found on the front lines at Mountain. Madara and his forces assumed that the leader of the Senju Clan was commanding from the rear, but they were caught off-guard when Kawaragi suddenly appeared on the Baigu Pass battlefield in the north. As soon as the Uchiha forces let their guard down, a hidden strike hit their most vulnerable position.
Madara had to admit, the move surprised him and his clan, but Kawaragi, the old bastard, had a knack for such unexpected maneuvers. Unlike Madara, who commanded his troops directly or defended the rear, Kawaragi preferred to sneak into side battlefields and strike where least expected.
Now, with Senju Hashirama leading the main battlefield at Yunshan, Madara wondered if this was a sign that Kawaragi intended to step down, allowing Hashirama to take over as clan leader.
After a few minutes, Madara's anger subsided. Seeing this, Uchiha Inosuke asked again, "Clan leader, should we send more reinforcements?"
Madara was about to say, "How can we spare more troops?" but he held his tongue. Just then, Uchiha Yanhuo entered the camp with a ninja eagle perched on his arm and reported, "Clan leader, we've received a message from the deputy chief."
Madara raised his eyebrows, gesturing for the bird to fly to him. He removed the secret message tied to its leg and unrolled the scroll. After reading it for a while, Madara sighed. "Izuna is a step too late this time."
Both Uchiha Inosuke and Uchiha Retsu frowned and couldn't help but ask curiously, "Clan leader, what do you mean?"
Madara handed the letter to Uchiha Inosuke, who read it alongside Uchiha Retsu. In the letter, Izuna detailed his analysis of the battlefield. His primary concern was Kawaragi's unexpected moves. Izuna warned that they should guard against flanking attacks, as it was unlikely that Kawaragi would stay stationed in the rear. Instead, Kawaragi was more likely to lead a small force in a surprise attack.
This was exactly how Senju Kawaragi had attacked Uchiha Deat squad forces the previous night, resulting in heavy losses.
After reading the letter, both Uchiha Inosuke and Uchiha Retsu sighed heavily. If the letter had arrived just two days earlier—no, even a day earlier—perhaps Uchiha death squad could have avoided this disastrous defeat.
Uchiha Inosuke suddenly became excited and said to Madara, "Clan leader, the deputy chief wrote that he's already on his way back. Why not let him take charge of the Baigu Pass battlefield?"
Madara glanced at Inosuke and immediately understood his suggestion. After considering it, he agreed. He quickly grabbed a pen and paper, wrote a letter, and attached it to the eagle's leg. Watching the bird fly off, Uchiha Retsu whispered to Uchiha Inosuke, "Do you really think the deputy chief alone can reverse the situation at Baigu Pass?"
"Didn't the deputy chief perform miracles at Stone City in the northwest?" Uchiha Inosuke replied confidently. "I believe he can turn things around here too."
Northern Region of the Land of Fire
That night, Izuna sat by a bonfire, a ninja eagle pecking at a roasted pheasant he had prepared for dinner. Izuna himself was focused on the letter from Uchiha Madara, illuminated by the flickering firelight.
"So, Senju Hashirama's strength has already surpassed Senju Kawaragi's, forcing Kawaragi to act this way?" Izuna muttered to himself.
As the leader of the Senju Clan, Senju Kawaragi should have been on the main battlefield at Mountain, not sneaking around the Baigu Pass in the north. Hashirama's dominance on the battlefield signaled that the Senju Clan had already fully embraced his leadership. It seemed that Kawaragi would eventually step down and let Hashirama take over completely.
"Well, no need for you to retire. I'll beat you so thoroughly that you'll have no choice but to step down," Izuna thought coldly. Just then, Uzumaki Mito approached, holding a lotus leaf still covered in morning dew.
Seeing the letter in Izuna's hand, Mito paused for a moment.
Izuna glanced at her and smirked. "Your grandfather's protégé has certainly made a name for himself on the main battlefield."
"Senju Hashirama?" Mito asked, placing the lotus leaf on the ground. She had no particular feelings about Hashirama, her fiancé whom she had never met—whether good or bad.
"Don't worry. Guanghai will soon realize that there's a better candidate for his granddaughter's husband," Izuna said with a wicked grin, grabbing Mito's hands.
Mito glared at him fiercely. When she couldn't pull her hands free, she sighed in frustration, "You know this is impossible..."
She shook her head. Their families were sworn enemies—how could they ever be together? But before she could finish her sentence, Izuna silenced her with a kiss.
Mito's eyes widened in shock. In that moment, everything faded away except for Izuna's face, which was now so close that it filled her vision.
Izuna's arm slid around her waist, pulling her close, while his other hand tangled in her long red hair, pressing their lips together even more tightly.
Mito's initial resistance softened, her hands that had been beating against Izuna's back now rested against him more gently. Eventually, she found herself wrapping her arms around him in return.
Izuna, sensing her surrender, didn't push further. After what felt like an eternity, he finally pulled away and looked directly into her eyes. "I don't care what it takes. I'll kill anyone who tries to stop us."
Mito's lips tingled from the kiss, but her heart raced with both anger and confusion. "My grandfather will never agree to this. What, are you planning to kill him too?"
Izuna smirked, thinking of an old saying, "When a man chases a woman, her mother stands in the way." He chuckled, "I'll promise not to kill him... just not to beat him to death."
"Scoundrel!" Mito shot back angrily, stomping on his foot. "How long do you plan on holding me like this?"
Izuna grinned mischievously, still holding her as he sat down and leaned against a nearby tree. "Just for tonight."
Mito, who had seemed so compliant moments ago, began struggling again. "No! I know what you're thinking!" she said indignantly.
Izuna tried to calm her, but Mito refused to settle down. Eventually, he sighed and let her go. Mito quickly ran ten meters away, glaring at him suspiciously as she prepared her sealing techniques before finally lying down to sleep.
