Chapter 42: Chapter 42: The Vampire Servant Opens Early

The person described by the client sounded remarkably similar to the giant bishop whose name ended with "ski." Herbert surmised it must be him, as Backlund was unlikely to have many individuals who had so dramatically turned over a new leaf.

Herbert decided to probe further: "I think I understand. You're referring to someone who wants to overcome their past evil and murderous personality, correct?"

The client shifted excitedly in his seat. "Your description is spot-on. How can we solve this problem?"

"Before we proceed, let's discuss payment," Herbert said.

"How about 120 pounds in cash?" the client offered.

Xio's eyes widened. Could they really earn over a hundred pounds so easily? She had recently seen someone selling a "Peacekeeper" potion formula for 450 pounds. Even though working with Herbert on commissions could be lucrative, it still wouldn't reach 450 pounds. How could this "lawyer" make money so quickly?

Herbert, however, countered, "Rather than cash, I'd prefer to obtain the 'Apothecary' potion formula from you."

Everyone in the room except Herbert was taken aback. Xio and the others immediately looked at Viscount Glaint, then at the client sitting across from them.

The hooded client stood up, seemingly ready to flee. "How... how did you know?"

Audrey read from his body language that the client lacked a sense of security. He appeared more like a fugitive, as if someone might jump out at any moment to claim a bounty on him.

Herbert had already obtained the information he wanted. The client's reaction confirmed it was indeed the giant bishop!

He also understood why the client felt so insecure. After all, the Kingdom of Loen wasn't a primary area of worship for the Earth Mother, so it was natural for her clergy and followers to distrust the local heretics.

Herbert quickly reassured him: "A friend of mine is a follower of the Earth Mother. I heard about that bishop's situation from him. I've forgotten the bishop's name, but I remember it had a very Feynapot Empire style, ending with 'ski' or something."

The client relaxed and sat back down. "It's Bishop Utravsky."

Then he asked, "May I know your friend's name?"

While Backlund had many casual followers of the Earth Mother, there were only a few dozen devout believers, most of whom he knew.

Herbert blurted out, "Emlyn!"

The client was visibly confused. "I don't recall a follower by that name." If Herbert hadn't answered so quickly, he might have suspected it was a made-up name.

Herbert waved his hand dismissively. "That doesn't affect our transaction or our ability to establish basic trust."

The client nodded, pausing for a moment before saying, "Your asking price is too high. My limit is 150 pounds, while the 'Apothecary' potion formula is worth at least 230 pounds."

"Perhaps we could arrange a three-way transaction," Glaint suddenly interjected. "I could pay Mr. Herbert 150 pounds in cash, then pay you 100 pounds in cash, and you give me the 'Apothecary' potion formula. This would be equivalent to me purchasing the formula for 250 pounds, while one of you receives 150 pounds as payment and the other gets 100 pounds in cash compensation. Then you two can complete your transaction, and we'll all be square."

The client shook his head. "I apologize, but we're here to spread the Mother Goddess's light, not to sell potion formulas. Bishop Utravsky has indeed received permission to exchange potion formulas for opportunities at self-redemption, but we cannot sell the formulas outright. We can only engage in mystical transactions. Of course, if you were to begin devoutly worshipping the Earth Mother's light and make some contributions to the church, there might be a chance to obtain the formula."

As a servant who had accompanied Bishop Utravsky to Backlund, he knew all the inside information.

Glaint looked disappointed. "I don't wish to convert my faith for this."

Herbert said, "We could do it this way: you can owe me today's payment, and in the future, when I provide more assistance to Bishop Utravsky, I'll ask him to settle the debt with the 'Apothecary' potion formula."

For instance, bringing the problem-solving "Mr. Moriarty" to the giant bishop would be a simple task for him, but it would have to wait until the Mr "Fool" became a Sequence 7.

Audrey suddenly felt that Herbert's phrase "you can owe me" sounded familiar, but upon reflection, she couldn't remember owing Herbert anything!

The client pondered for a moment. "That's acceptable."

"Let me tell you how to overcome one's past self," Herbert said. "This requires the help of a 'mid-sequence' Beyonder from the 'Spectator' pathway, or the use of a non-characteristic item of the same level. We'll also need a 'mid-sequence' Beyonder skilled in combat to participate in the operation.

"The specific method is to ask the 'Spectator' pathway Beyonder to separate Bishop Utravsky's evil and murderous personality. Then, hypnotize or draw both the separated personality and the combat-skilled Beyonder into the dream world.

"In the dream world, if the combat-skilled Beyonder kills the separated personality, Bishop Utravsky will achieve true redemption."

After Herbert finished explaining, the room fell silent.

Audrey's eyes sparkled, realizing the mysterious abilities she would possess upon becoming a "mid-sequence" Beyonder.

Xio and Fors felt as if they were encountering the extraordinary world for the first time. Could one really overcome oneself in such a manner?

Glaint appeared thoughtful, his gaze towards Herbert slightly altered.

The client remained silent for a few seconds before saying, "This method sounds very feasible, but where can we find a 'mid-sequence' Beyonder from the 'Spectator' pathway?"

Herbert realized that if the giant bishop had already obtained the "Nightmare Candle," he wouldn't need to search the world for a way to overcome himself.

With this in mind, he spread his hands. "If I help you find such a person, the payment would be more than just one 'Apothecary' potion formula."

The client nodded. "You're right."

He added, "Your answer is indeed worth 150 pounds!"

Herbert smiled. "My name is Herbert, and I'm a lawyer. When I come to provide new assistance to Bishop Utravsky and collect the debt, I'll give my name and profession."

The client stood up. "You are a generous and trustworthy gentleman!"

As the transaction concluded, Herbert and the other four left the gathering and boarded Viscount Glaint's carriage. Xio couldn't help but caution Herbert, "Aren't you worried that Bishop Utravsky or whatever his name is won't honor the agreement?"

Herbert smiled. "The bishop may run, but the church can't. If he doesn't pay up, I'll sell off the church's assets to settle the debt."

While he appeared casual about the payment issue in this transaction, it was because he knew Bishop Utravsky had been consistently seeking self-redemption and was unlikely to deceive others in such matters.

That's why he felt comfortable allowing the client to owe him.

Herbert added with a smile, "Besides, this is the only way I can obtain the 'Apothecary' potion formula."
