Kapitel 234: 34. Runaway Train.

Adam sighed inwardly as he overheard several Salvatores discussing how difficult it was to care for Mimi when Mariella needed them. He could feel his temper rising, but having Tim by his side helped to keep him calm. Even though he was no longer the pack leader, he still exuded an alpha male presence. Most of the time, he and Charles acted as de facto pack leaders, especially when dealing with this particular pack. Whenever the group of lustful Salvatores went on their sex vacations, whether in bedrooms or elsewhere, it was time for them to step up to make sure the stuff was handled as it should.

The house felt cold and impersonal. Despite its stainless steel and black stone-filled kitchen, light grey walls adorned with art pieces chosen by Mariella, and rugs that appeared cheap and lacked any real appeal under his feet, the mansion lacked that special touch. Adam couldn't quite put his finger on it, whether it was Mimi's touch or something else, but he could see several changes he would make to the house. However, decorating had never been his responsibility; it had always been Mariella's. But things had changed.

Just as Adam was lost in his thoughts, Tim's calm voice interrupted him, asking, "Do you want to check that corridor while I handle this, or should we do it together?"

After a moment of consideration, Adam replied, "You check over there. I'll explore these rooms, and then we'll regroup."

As Adam calmly walked along the corridor, his strong physique, dark night-black hair, and vampiric pale skin, combined with his strikingly handsome features resembling an actor from centuries ago, made him a sight to behold. He chuckled to himself as he peered into the first room and realized that Mimi wasn't there. Although Mimi wasn't officially his mate or wife yet, he knew that she would be in the future. This time, Adam swore to himself that he would ensure some sort of prohibition to prevent Damon from forcing him to divorce Mimi, should it ever come to that. He regretted not being stronger during those times, as they were never truly his own choices.

It was just a recent dream he had, one with Mercy, his ex-wife who had passed away long ago and moved on to a different state of being. She was in chaos and briefly mentored Mimi when Mimi first became supernatural. She had talked with him about Mimi, giving the idea of taking her and never letting go. For love. Losing Mercy was one of the hardest things he had gone through, leaving deep wounds in his soul. He tried to heal these wounds by drinking, partying, and engaging in casual relationships, but it was Mimi, a small and unassuming creature, who had captured his heart. Her love healed his broken heart and brought him more happiness than he had ever felt with Mercy.

Now this very creature was missing again. Adam touched his pocket, feeling the small syringe filled with a powerful sedative. Mimi was sick with a fever and had cared for them until she couldn't anymore. As a highly powerful creature, she pushed herself too far, causing her body to succumb to the fever. Restless and feeling unsafe in her feline form, she sought shelter in a room. However, this didn't help her situation, as she needed antibiotics, fever medication, and rest.

What bothered Adam even more was the fact that none of the Salvatores had used their fangs to make custom-made antibiotics for Mimi. Instead, they were solely focused on Mariella, who was perfectly fine and healthy. Mariella took advantage of this situation, being needy and jealous, ensuring that none of the Salvatores would act as protectors or doctors for Mimi.

And then, Mariella had the audacity to approach Adam in the medbay while he received news of Mimi's disappearance. She wrapped herself around him, suggesting they relieve some stress together and mentioning his enticing scent. This infuriated Adam, causing him to turn around and slam Mariella against the wall, holding her by the throat. His fangs emerged, his eyes turning black. It was rare for Adam to unleash his dangerous vampire side, and even Damon had warned Mariella about this volatile aspect of Adam.

Adam whispered to Mariella, his voice filled with anger and frustration. "To me, the love of my life is Mimi, not you or your sopping wet cunt. Go find pleasure with Salvatores if you wish. I'm sure they'll be more than willing to plunge their cocks into your pussy and make you scream. The rest of the pack will take care of those who are sick. It's despicable of you to think I would abandon Mimi for your sake. I may be a creature of energy, but I'm not driven solely by my cock, unless it's Mimi who's driving me crazy. I could painfully drain you dry and leave you bleeding, aching, a mess, but I don't think that's what you want, is it?"

As his hot breath suffocated Mariella, she paled and couldn't utter a word. Adam threw her out of the medbay and went to find Mimi. He wasn't in the mood to be seduced when some pack members were still sick. Mimi was on his mind constantly, and he even thought about building a nest with her. He wanted her to be safe and secure in his arms, but he also needed to make sure the others received treatment. He had a few more things to take care of and thought that a group healing approach might help others recover as well.

Adam opened the next door and smelled the faint scent of overripe strawberries. He knew Mimi was here. He walked in, not bothering to turn on the lights, as his eyes adjusted to the dimness. Adam sighed, now understanding. This room, he remembered, was originally decorated by Mimi. It held memories of their passionate times together. Mariella had turned it into a storage room, filling it with boxes and old furniture. Amidst the clutter, Mimi was perched high up on an empty bookshelf, one she had acquired for herself.

Despite the passing of those seven long years, and what had come before and after that, these memories from the past still held a visceral impact that pierced Adam's heart. He made a silent vow to create something better, knowing that he couldn't right all the wrongs, but determined to do something. He had been with Mimi for roughly two centuries, and in his eyes, she belonged to him more than Damon. Damon didn't desire her as much as Adam did, and he was prepared to make his feelings known.

"Honey, I understand you're scared and ill. Come on, let me assist you,"

Adam's voice remained calm as he levitated and gently picked up the small black cat, whose fur was puffed up from fever-induced shivers.

"Shh, I know this used to be our room. It will be again someday, believe me. But right now, we need to take you back to get your antibiotics."

Adam landed with the feline in his arms and focused on his magic, allowing the transformation to gently return her to her human form. Mimi had lost a significant amount of weight due to the high fever and restlessness, but they would do their best to help her.

Adam smiled softly and said, "Now, young lady, let's get you back, a good dose of fever medication—my own creation, so not vinegary but possibly sweet, as I tend to use sugar—and then you can rest."

Mimi nodded. Her weariness was evident to Adam. It was incredibly unfair that she had ten so-called protectors who had more or less abandoned her, all for the sake of their private orgy. But it was fine; Adam, the boys, and the others would ensure the rest of the pack was taken care of.

As Adam carried me into the medbay, I was incredibly exhausted and still feeling freaking sick. I had lost track of how long I had been here. Despite that, I knew I had pulled off this trick many fucking times before. Whenever I ventured out, I would use my damn pheromones and alpha female power to bring Mimosa and Shadow close to me. Then I would sedate them with my dental substances and transform them into feline forms to act as decoys, allowing me to hide and stay safe.

However, this mansion didn't feel secure, and I had finally found our room. But as usual, it had become a storage area. Now, being in Adam's arms, I realized this was where I wanted to be. However, the practical side of me, along with my alpha side, knew there were other patients as well. Wulfe, Magnum, Dresden Constantine, and one or two Salvatores, I guessed. I was not sure if there were anymore Salvatores as Mariella wanted to heal them in bed.

As we arrived in the medbay, Adam gently placed me back in bed and raised the sides. He went to gather the necessary supplies, and Lepard was on his way as well.

He stroked my forehead and said, "I told you, you should have been one of the patients so you wouldn't be in this condition."

I nodded and replied, "Putting the pack first, not myself. You know me, it's who I am."

Adam returned with the supplies and said, "Soon, missy, you'll get a bed bath and some rest. We'll do our best to help you heal, so please try not to run away."

I chuckled and said, "You know me, the most freaking difficult patient in the world. Can't help it. I bet dealing with the damn trouble triangle wasn't as bad as dealing with me."

Demon retorted, "Nope, you're easier. No need to separate three people all the time. You're just one tiny slip of a thing, easily carried." I smiled.

Adam injected something into my vein, and it felt warm. Of course, I had already ripped out my cannula and removed some of the dressings from my wounds in my fever-induced haze. Some of the wounds were still covered, but not all of them. Soon, I started feeling warm, which initially felt nice as the bone-deep chill began to fade. However, the warmth soon turned into heat, and sweat started pouring down my forehead as the fever broke once again. The boys smiled slightly as I groaned and collapsed onto the bed, becoming a sweaty mess.

As Adam checked my temperature, he said, "It's working well. Okay, boys, let's get her washed up and then insert the cannula. By then, she'll be out of it."

As he spoke, he injected something into my thigh.

I glared at him, and he explained, "It's a sedative, my love. By my fangs, so it works."

It was quite amusing, although it's hard to believe, that Adam, despite not being my protector, was capable of doing some really effective things for me with his abilities. I had read about protectors before, and I learned that it also involved emotions. So, my educated guess, if one can even be educated about protectors, was that Adam had such powerful feelings for me, which made him willing to do things for me and act as my protector when needed. The same applied to Charles, and it had always irked Mariella and for good. But the same situation made Damon able to heal and help Mariella too.

As the boys, including Adam, started to clean me, it was truly wonderful. I always enjoyed having a bed bath. Of course, while they were cleaning me, Mariella and others, numbers one, four, and two, came in to check on Wulfe and Dresden. Although their presence had little medical significance, magically speaking, they still tried various spells and methods to help Wulfe recover from his poisoning. Magnum's healing process wasn't as fast as we hoped. He was no longer on a ventilator but still needed his burns dressed multiple times a day. Constantine and Dresden were making progress in their healing, but they weren't ready to leave yet. Charles was still in the process of healing as well.

Mariella noticed three men washing a skeleton-like Mimi and, still feeling jealous and messed up, she said to Damon, "Damon, I tried earlier to suggest to Adam some time apart, but he got sick and wants to be with Mimi."

Number two grunted; lust had also clouded his judgment. It was difficult for energy creatures to regain control when one type of energy dominated too much. Unfortunately, all of the Salvatores were thinking more about their desires than their brains. He wasn't jealous, nor did he have any interest in Mimi, as she wasn't that attractive. Mariella, on the other hand, was desirable, and she had ensnared them with her pheromones.

What none of them knew was that Mimi was aware of Mariella's actions. She had given her own pheromones to Adam and the boys, protecting them from Mariella's influence so they could think clearly instead of being driven by their desires. Mimi didn't say anything; she simply rolled her eyes in her mind. Pack life. Not much had changed, but once she regained her health, her plan would take shape. Mimi, transformed by the Venoms, would not stay quiet or warn the Salvatores before things went too far, as she used to do. She would not deliver a speech and make everyone see what a group of idiots they were.

She had changed, and she wouldn't play nice anymore. The pack would surely notice, but the million-dollar question was: What would the pack do then? For now, she remained patient, a pitiful, skinny, skeletal creature being washed and cared for by her pack. But in her mind, a plan like no other was taking form, and it would soon be time for a fresh start, a new beginning for them all, regardless of Salvatores' decision.
