"Ugh… what is this…"

The girl in emerald touched the ground, shaking her head as she rose to her feet. As Eugenia regained her senses, she took in the horrific scene around her. The earth was ravaged, rocks shattered into gravel, and foliage dripping with moisture as raindrops fell incessantly.

After taking a moment to survey her surroundings, she noticed a dark-haired man lying next to her.

"Huh…?"

The girl's heart sank as she worried that something terrible might have happened to him.

Concerned, she reached out to him, feeling his shallow breath against her fingertips. He was unconscious, but he didn't seem to be in any immediate danger.

"Phew…"

She let out a sigh of relief and carefully adjusted his position so that he was more comfortable.

As Edwin, who had been lying on his side, was properly positioned, Eugenia was able to look at his face from a closer distance.

"Wow… wow…"

Feeling a slight embarrassment, Eugenia sighed softly. It was the first time she had seen a boy up close, aside from her childhood friend.

Jet-black, well-groomed hair, a slender jawline, a refined nose, and flawless, slightly dusky complexion, even with his eyes closed, his charisma emanated fully.

"…Waaah…"

Eugenia, who had been lost in thought for a moment, admiring him, quickly pinched her cheeks to bring herself back to attention.

"No, no… not the time for this… what to do…"

She tried to remember how she had ended up in this situation, but she could not remember any of the gaps in between.

Her last memory was Edwin's harsh rejection, which flooded her with intense sadness and despair. Another strange thing was that she couldn't feel any presence of spirits around her, despite the Academy usually teeming with them. Where had they all gone?

So many strange things had happened in such a short time that her head was spinning and she couldn't keep up with the situation…

—KYUUU!!!

….when a familiar green fluff ball appeared above Eugenia's head, who was still deep in thought.

"Eh…? You…! Where have you been?!

Overjoyed to see it, Eugenia grabbed the fluff ball and rubbed it against her cheek; the spirit seemed to accept the touch calmly, then suddenly jumped up and smashed its body against her forehead.

"Why all of a sudden? Did I hold you too tightly… eh…?"

Eugenia's body momentarily flinched and stiffened at the memory that the spirit had directly contacted and conveyed to her.

And scenes began to flash through her mind.

In that memory, she was bowing her head and muttering inaudible words.

The nearby spirits had turned into a murky light, and the surroundings were filled with wind and rain, tearing up the earth and breaking the rocks.

And across from her stood the man who had rejected her, Edwin Reed.

Edwin held his head in his hands for a moment, agonizing, then reached into the void and continuously projected unrefined mana.

As Edwin's mana touched the spirits, they regained their colors, and the abnormal phenomena around them gradually subsided.

As time passed, Edwin grew more and more exhausted, but he didn't give up.

In the end, all the spirits around him came under his control, and Edwin gently laid himself down, exhausted. With his last strength, he dispersed the spirits far away.

Exhausted, Edwin collapsed on the spot.

"Uh… uh…?"

Eugenia's thoughts halted. She realized that she was the one who caused the devastation, and Edwin was the one who prevented it.

And only after seeing the spirit's memory did Eugenia realize that this was what the principal had warned her about, the resonance with the spirit. She also realized, to the core, why the principal had emphasized the importance of peace of mind.

She let out a deep sigh.

She thought she was fine, but perhaps she had been under a lot of stress lately.

She turned her head back to Edwin. He was still breathing lightly, not yet awakened from his slumber.

She clearly knew that resonance couldn't be stopped without help from others, and recalling the memories, it seemed clear that Edwin had helped stop her resonance.

She was curious about Edwin.

Seeing how he had used all his strength to help her, he didn't seem like a bad person.

But why was he so good with other children, but so reluctant to be friends with her?

Was it because he was a noble and didn't want to be friends with a country girl like her?

When she first saw him sleeping with the spirits, she thought she had finally found a friend who understood her.

Her shoulders slumped helplessly.

…I'll have to apologize when he wakes up. I might have been too pushy. It's understandable if he dislikes me so much…

As she was thinking this and staring blankly at Edwin, his closed eyes suddenly opened.

And his gaze immediately fell on Eugenia, who was looking at him.

"Uh… uh?"

* * * * *

I feel it—

— the myriad of subtle sensations coursing through my body. The rhythmic beating of my heart, the rustling of leaves in the breeze, the rough and smooth texture of the stones beneath me. And… the faint breath of someone above my face.

"uh…?"

As I opened my eyes, the first thing I saw was a pair of vivid emerald eyes staring intensely at me from very close distance.

"I…I'm sorry… I didn't mean to do anything strange! Please, don't misunderstand!"

The girl, like a blade of grass, stammered with both hands outstretched. I attempted to sit up, but my arms gave out, and I collapsed again.

"…Be careful! It takes time for your strength to return… Gah!"

The girl, seeing my state, quickly approached to support me, but instead, she was swept away by my weight and we both fell back to the ground.

Lying down again, Eugenia was on top of me in a somewhat awkward position. I could see two green eyes shaking at an incredible speed. At such a close distance, I could hear her breath and the pounding of her heart.

"Ah…huh…?"

"…Move… I can't breathe…"

The girl didn't seem to think of getting off. When I couldn't take it anymore and urged her, only then did Eugenia's dazed eyes come into focus.

And then, she got off at a rapid pace that I had never seen before, as if she was rolling down.

Even after the girl came down, I remained lying down, my strength drained.

For a while, Eugenia remained silent, then she apologized to me in a small voice.

"I…I'm sorry…"

"…It's okay…if it's what just happened, you don't have to…"

"No, not that…no, I'm sorry for that too…but I'm sorry for being so stubborn and insisting on being friends…sorry…"

Eugenia's voice was very downcast. I was worried that something like what just happened would happen again, but even though she was sad, she seemed to be keeping her emotions in check this time.

"I know you have your own feelings…I think I was only thinking about myself.."

"Um, I won't bother you anymore about being friends. So can you just listen to my story one last time…? I haven't had anyone to talk to in a long time, so I'm so frustrated…just listen to me for a little bit…"

"…If it's just that much…"

When I nodded, Eugenia let out a relieved sigh. And she began to pour out her trivial stories.

She said that she lived an ordinary life in a rural village, but one day she confirmed her Mana Heart awakening and came to the academy with her childhood friend, Eugene.

At first, she was just happy and excited, but soon she became increasingly stressed about life at the academy with strangers from different backgrounds.

So at first, she stuck close to her childhood friend Eugene, but he soon made other friends and she hardly saw him outside of the classroom these days.

In the meantime, she awakened the ability of a spirit mage, but she could not reveal it to the public, and had to keep the joy to herself.

At the beginning of the semester, she was so busy hanging out with Eugene that she hardly made any friends, and now most of the groups had been formed and she was left floating in between.

During those gloomy days, the spirit led her to this mountain, and she was so happy to meet me here that she approached me like that.

"Haah…"

Eugenia's words drew a deep sigh from me. I understood why she felt anxious and why her mental state was troubled.

She lost her place too quickly.

And it was all because of me, of all people.
