Kapitel 5: 5 .The Infinite Tower Part : 3
The map icon beside the mission screen pointed to the general direction they needed to go . Their was no specific route and no path to follow .
it seemed like that was going to be all the help they would get .
From the mission itself , he could infer allot of things ;like the existence of a living race that resided the forest .
Were they hostile , the answer was most likely yes . And the hint they were given .
Did it mean that they should only travel during the day . Was it telling them that the denizens were only active during the night .
There were too many questions but too little answers .
" What do you think Zoe ?" he asked turning to his new companion . " Should we try going into the forest ? " His question served two major objectives .
One, to judge her reasoning capabilities and two to see if she could also come to the same conclusion he had arrived on .
She remained silent in thought , not answering him directly but clearly thinking about what she was about to say .
" I think we will face attacks from the forest denizens , most likely during the night " she said and looked at him and he nodded urging her to continue .
" It will probably be a large group that will force us to delay until the fifth day and . I don't think killing any of the denizens of the forest will be as easy as the system is trying to say "
He nodded and he would have even clapped if they were the only ones still near the cave entrance .
"What about the hint ? . Any ideas . " he asked once more , that was truly what he was interested in . Could she comprehend the inner workings of this whole mission .
From the moment he was talking to the being , he had understood many things .
First of all , despite the being saying it's nature was solely based on it's power ,it did not dismiss the relevance of chaos and order ,it only said those concepts would not limit it's judgement .
This likely meant that the being followed certain rules and regulations , certain things it could do and things it could not .
This also meant , it also had to maintain a level of fairness that would allow the contestants to complete the mission no matter how hard .
A small detail that when exploited would make the mission decrease in it's difficulty and to him , the hint was that detail .
" I ... think ... " she seemed to be hesitating , likely unsure of the answer she was about to give . Mika nodded in encouragement .
Mika felt it , the answer he was about to get would not disappoint " I think we should use fire ? " Zoe looked at Mika still questioning what she had said , unsure of her own answer .
" HA A HA HA ! "
YES , this was it . That was the answer Mika had wanted , the only true way to complete the mission .
It did not matter any more if he attracted the attention of the others no , Mika was satisfied with Zoe's answer , she had proven herself worthy ..
Zoe started looking crestfallen , almost sad that her answer had been dismissed with a mere laugh .
"You are right , we do need fire "
Her head quickly shot upwards gazing into his eyes , searching for any sign of deceit .
Maybe Mika was just agreeing with her to make her feel better but after a while staring at those crystal blue eyes , Zoe realized he was being serious .
Mikael saw the worry that had clouded her face disappear now replaced with curiosity .
She wanted to know how they would possibly create fire . She had said it as an option but not as the conclusion they would rely on .
Suddenly , a large group burst from the forest screaming their lungs out . They looked injured and bruised in several areas and parts of their clothes were reaped and torn .
They scrambled away from the forest , quickly reaching near the cave entrance as they started shouting at each other .
" FUCK !! HOW THE HECK CAN A MONKEY THROW A STONE THAT HARD !" The first person shouted almost sounding unwilling at what had just happened .
" YOU BASTARD , YOU SAID THAT WE WOULD BE SAFE DURING THE DAY ! " " FUCK OFF , HOW WOULD I KNOW THAT IT GOT DARKER THE FURTHER YOU WENT !"
Two people were arguing , probably the leader of the group that had formed and an angry contestant .
"HEY YOU SAID YOU WOULD PROTECT MY BACK FROM THOSE MONKIES . WHERE THE FUCK WERE YOU ! " "HOW WAS I SUPPOSED TO HELP YOU WHILE ALSO BEING ATTACKED . USE THAT BIG HEAD OF YOURS IDOT !! "
Immediately after they finished shouting at each other they started fighting already coming to blows .
"EVERYONE SHUT UP ! "
The new leader finally reached a breaking point tired of being blamed by the group . " Listen , we can do this again . We now know how those monkies attack give me ... "
"No Max , we already gave you a chance and you failed , their are no second chances , "
The person who had been arguing with the leader, now confirmed to be Max shouted out making sure the entire group heard .
As an outsider watching the ordeal , it was almost funny to look at . From what he could guess from the two , they were both trying to be the leaders of this large group .
Max was the most favoured at the start but now that he had failed the other guy was thinking of taking over .
If Max had succeeded in leading them through the forest the guy would have probably never spoken up but now , the fruit was ripe for picking .
That was why Mika would never let himself be on the loosing side . It made people think you were weak .
"Let's leave . " Mika said taking Zoe's arm and leading her away from the group , her hand tensed for a second before it relaxed .
" Where are we going ? " Zoe asked , accepting to be led back into the cave . Mika turned looking at her and smiled brightly
" To create our TROJAN HORSE "
Zoe was confused by Mika's words . How exactly did he plan on doing that , she wondered but grew more confused as Mika led her back inside the cave .
Mika walked up to where they had spawned and looked around , searching for something . He looked round the huge empty space they had woken up from and then he took a deep breath .
Mika finally picked a pathway and dove into it's darkness , Zoe tensed holding his hand tightly maybe afraid at what he was doing .
" Where do you think the bats are in this cave . " Mika turned to look at her , and he could see her navigating well enough in the dark environment .
" Isn't it suspicious that we haven't heard a single bat since we started walking ? "Mika hinted trying to lead the conversation .
Zoe looked at him curiously . Was this her way of telling him she knew he could also see in the dark , he did not know .
Zoe looked to be in thought , thinking about his words , there was a small detail she was missing . Why else would Mika mention bats .
" yes , you could say this cave isn't infested with bats but , their is one thing that disapproves that point "
A horrible stench suddenly filled Zoe's nose . It was like smelling .... rotten eggs !
She quickly turned to Mika and she found him smiling , waiting for answer . " The smell of rotten eggs , that's why you think that these cave has bats . Bats urinate a highly toxic form of Sulphur that smells like rotten eggs but , where are they ? "
Zoe was now more confused than satisfied . YES , where were the bats .
" Now that we know bats are supposed to be in this cave . The real question is , why aren't they ? . Maybe they migrated , which is very unlikely or maybe they were moved so that the contestants could undergo the trial mission ! "
Zoe nodded in acceptance , the reasoning was logical enough but so what , how were the bats going to help them complete their mission .
" Despite that , what I'm interested in isn't the bats themselves , but what they produce !! "
She looked like she was starting to finally understand but barely . She thought it over turning the reasoning over in her mind .
" Bat droppings also referred to as bat guano is a highly combustible contact based explosive that can be used in gun powder due to it's high concentration of salt Petre ! "
Zoe finally got it , using the guano , they could make , fire !
" Even better , the urine of the bats is a highly concentrated form of Sulphur that is not only very explosive but also very flammable , we will use it as the fuel to kickstart the whole process and viola , we have a make shift grenade .''
Zoe felt the excitement bubbling through her . If what Mika was saying was true , they would be able to accomplish the mission in the shortest amount of time possible .
They walked further into the tunnel as it curved , twisted and turned every few second . The pathway finally widened opening up to a huge cavern that glowed dimly blue, the bioluminescent glowworms painting an image that was breathtaking .
They were both silent each with their individual thoughts . Admiring the opportunity to catch their breaths .
Mika took in another deep breath and felt the slight stinging in his nose .The smell of rotten eggs was concentrated in this cavern and that was obviously a good sign .
Mika gazed at the ground of the cavern , his eagles eyes zooming in on the ground and he spotted piles and piles of of the dark brown bat guano filling the entire floor and he smiled once again .
" We've struck gold ."
