Kapitel 9: Chapter 9

"Stop," Rae cried, unable to face Cara, who now bore the burden of having to undo what Isha made her do to herself.

"No, I won't stop. She has to know how wonderful you are as a mother and how vile Isha was as a daughter in this house," Dexter told her and turned to Cara, who sat there in shock, trembling from anger as mild tremors rocked the room, but everyone was too distraught to pay attention.

"After the blood incident, Isha asked your mom to sell her kidney so we could buy a bigger and better house. Something your mother was willing to do, but for the timely intervention of the Smiths suddenly coming for her," Dexter huffed, trying to swallow the lump in his throat and holding back from crying at all his sister had been through with Isha.

"Have you ever wondered where the rumors of my sister being a disreputable mistress who switched her baby with that of a wealthy family came from?" he sighed softly and asked, meeting Cara's gaze.

"Don't tell me..." Cara began but stopped midsentence upon seeing her uncle nod.

"Same Isha," he acknowledged with a small nod, feeling drained after releasing all his pent-up anger.

"You know, I never understood why my sweet sister would give birth to a monstrous witch like Isha. But now I see the difference and the reason for all that's happened, and I'm glad you're here with her and ready to make amends," he finished and glanced at Rae, who was spent emotionally to the point where she had considered suicide. But the thought of leaving her daughter alone in this world kept her going.

"I'll go with you to resign from your skewering job at that barbecue shop," Cara took a deep breath, retrieved a pen and a piece of paper from a corner, and began writing prescriptions for her mother's illness as the anger ebbed away.

"Huh?" Rae asked in astonishment, glancing at Dexter, who shrugged at her.

"Yes, Mom. I know where you work and what you do. I'm, however, sorry it took me this long to come back home to you," she said, glancing at her mom and back at what she was writing.

"How's that okay, Cara?" Rae asked worriedly, chewing the side of her lips as she stared at this strange daughter of hers.

"Trust me, Mom, I know what I'm doing," Cara told her, concentrating on her writing.

"I know it doesn't pay well, but it takes care of the household expenses as well as our feeding," her mother pleaded. Cara sighed and put down the pen, her eyes scanning the prescription for errors or omissions.

"You really can't be working in your health condition; otherwise, your life would be at stake," she said bluntly, meeting her mother's eyes. Startled, Dexter turned to his sister.

"Listen to Cara, sis, there's nothing more important than your health," he pleaded, suddenly throwing his faith at his niece after her correct prediction about Rae selling her blood.

"Uh..." Rae began, frantically thinking of a credible argument to put up.

"If your concern is money, I've got that covered," Cara told her, studying her expression and waiting for another resistance from her mother.

"That's not it," Rae denied, drawing a small chuckle from her daughter who found it quite funny that her mother didn't prove her wrong.

"I have ten thousand bucks from my personal savings I earned from doing favors, which I plan on purchasing some investments with. So be rest assured I know what I'm doing," she assured her mother while her eyes flitted slightly to Dexter, who held back a smile, knowing very well where that money came from. But he wasn't ready to rat out his partner in crime and have his goose cooked.

Suddenly he realized the meaning of that glance and swore internally as he took out all the money in his wallet, not missing the small smile Cara gave him.

"This is my monthly wage and bonus I got yesterday. Henceforth, I'd be handing them to you for safekeeping," he assured her and offered his tithes and offerings with a smile on his face and a grimace in his heart.

"I can't accept this," Rae told him as she gently pushed the money back. But before he could rejoice at his stroke of luck, he caught Cara's seemingly casual gaze and pushed the money back to her.

"We're a family, sis, and what's mine is yours," he gulped while Cara made herself comfortable on the chair and watched the drama.

"I don't want to do nothing and seem ungrateful," she demurred.

"I don't want to lose you, but I'll leave at once without looking back if you reject all we're offering for the sake of your well-being," Cara suddenly intervened and began leaving.

But how could Dexter watch his dearest niece just leave their life after opening his perspective to a world of immense possibilities?

"Do something, sis," he pleaded frantically just as Cara got to the door, understanding his assignment in this emotional blackmail but unwilling to take that chance either.

"I promise," Rae blurted after a momentary hesitation which almost stopped Dexter's beating heart.

"What do you promise, Mom?" Cara asked, reluctantly turning around to face her.

"I promise to resign and put my health first," Rae replied.

"Let's go then," Cara cracked a smile, not missing the sigh of inaudible relief from her uncle as she went out with her mother.

Due to her popularity for her kind nature, lots of people greeted Rae on their way out, leaving her no choice but to introduce Cara to them.

Cara saw the pretense in a few of them and would have just walked on by, but had to match up the plasticity of their nature as her mother proudly introduced her to them as her daughter. She hadn't had this opportunity before and chose not to let those few gossiping witches ruin the uniqueness of the moment for her.

True to her expectations, the rotten few sparked up an argument about how shameful it was that such a pretty girl was an illegitimate daughter no one wants because of her mother's sordid past; and how karma finally caught up with her, leaving her no choice but to stay in the dampest parts of a basement for ruining someone else's marriage and family.

...

Cara and her mom on the other hand, got to their destination in no time and met with Madam Stella, a lady in her forties and Rae's boss.

She gave Cara a once-over and scrunched up her face in disgust at such exquisite beauty, thinking how it was such a shame that either she was going to be a mistress like her mother or was already one and had a rich old man taking care of all her whims.

She couldn't figure out how the daughter of a peasant who worked for two thousand bucks would have such flawless skin and looks made for the goddesses alone.

"How could you selfishly try to resign from your job knowing how busy we are right now?" she asked in a displeased tone after being told their reason for visiting.

"How do we hire a replacement on such short notice?" she asked shrilly, sizing up Cara who was apparently tired of all the yapping and complaints.

"Could you please make an exception, my life is at stake here," Rae pleaded helplessly, feeling terrible for putting her boss through such a conundrum.

"Do I look like I'm running a charity organization?" Stella yelled, not minding the fine spray of her saliva on Rae's face or Cara's facial expression like she was at the end of her tether.

"How long can I stay in business if every staff decides to be as useless as you?" she ranted.

"If I'm to make an exception, however, you'll pay me a month's salary as a fine before you scram," she finished with a huff, watching Rae cowering in apparent submission with satisfaction.

"I won't resign anymore then," Rae pleaded, considering that if it were to be deducted from her salary, then she'd have toiled the whole month for nothing.

Cara sighed, glancing at her timid mom as she sat up in her chair, her heart aching as she wished she could have a session with her host in a wrestling ring and beat sense into her.

"How about this, I'll work for one month which should be enough time for you to get a new staff while my mother caters to her health. Does that work for you?" she calmly asked as she mentally reminded herself not to beat up this lady before her.

"What can those skinny arms and legs do in a reputable business place like this?" Madam Stella sized her up with disdain.

"Well, these disreputable arms and legs can get you more customers than your mind can envision, Auntie," Cara replied sweetly, while her mother glanced from her to Madam Stella, sensing the tension between them.

"It's alright, Cara. We can forgo the pay instead," she tugged at Cara's hand, scared of what her temper could reveal; besides, she was yet to come to terms with what she witnessed back at their house.

"Try me, Auntie, or fire me if I don't perform well," Cara suddenly broke the ice by smiling at Madam Stella, catching her off guard. The money wasn't much to Cara, but she didn't want to see her mom's hard work go down the drain. Hence her compromise.

"I'll reconsider my stance for the fact that you're such a filial child. If I find, however, that you're lacking in your performance, you'll be fired without pay," Madam Stella smiled, knowing when to retreat from a losing battle.

"You won't regret it, Auntie," Cara smiled softly.

"You are to resume by six," Madam Stella added.

"Six it is, ma'am," Cara nodded as she helped her mother up and led her to the door, straight to a traditional Chinese medicine dispensary.

"What are we doing here?" Rae asked curiously.

"It's not enough to recuperate through rest; you'll need some herbal medicine for nourishment as well," Cara told her as she opened the door and led her in.
