Kapitel 9: charms & transfiguration class
The next day came around fairly quickly. Breakfast went of without a hitch, besides the constant glares from the slytherin table. Every time I'd glance over the first years would look away whist the older years would glare harder.
On todays schedular was Charms followed by transfiguration,then for the rest of the day we had a free period. Most first years would spend that time slacking off, the only expecting being Hermione, the ravenclaws and myself.
Beakfast ended without any issues as with the amount of teachers around it would be stupid to try anything. The charms classroom was a far distance from the great hall but students like myself who are familiar with the layout could always arrive on time.
It didn't take long for the charms classroom to fill up with first years and once it did in came the half goblin professor.
"Greeting students! It's good to see so many new faces, it brings much joy to this old man's heart to teach you all." The jovial professor began. " my name is professor Flitwick and for the next seven years I'll be the one teaching you charms" the smile on his face showed how much he truely enjoyed his job.
" now let's get on with todays lesson. Today I'll teach you a very useful spell. It's the levitation charm. The incantation is Wingardium Leviosa, repeat after me students Wingardium Leviosa" we repeated the phrase a three times. " good good students now for the wand movements, follow after me without saying the incantation of course."
Looking over the students he looked please with the level of attention the students where paying. However an oddity caused him to raise an eye brow. " miss black where is your wand?" This caused most in the class to turn their attention towards me.
" I don't want to use it professor" this caused a few gasps from the pure bloods.
" ohhh? And why is that miss black" the man was curious, why wouldn't I new student want to use their wand.
" you see professor I read that although wands help a wizard control magic it eventually becomes a crutch with stops one form reaching the peak. So I decided to try my first year without a wand, if it goes well I'll continue. If not I suppose I'll just use it." After my little speech a few couldn't help but agree. However as most wizards in hogwarts are pure bloods and to them wands are a type of sacred tool.
Prefessor Flitwick looked at me a moment before sighing. " alright miss black I will allow you to try but you must be able to perform the spell by the end of the lesson." Flitwick definitely understood the point I was making. As a champion duelest how could he not understand the restrictions a wand gives. At the same time however he understood how hard magic was to control.
Looking at the feather in front of me I move my hand over the feather. Following the movements that would typically be used for a wand i moved my arm and said the incantation.
" Wingardium Leviosa" my voice resounded through the classroom all the Students where watching. Gryffindor out of curiosity and slytherin in an attempt to mock my presumed failure.
As the words left my mouth the feather however slowly began to raise into the air. Although unstable I believe this could be due to my poor mastery of the spell.
A few seconds of levitating the feather I decided to drop the spell. Once I did so professor Flitwick began clapping " marvellous! Truely marvellous! Your talent as a witch is outstanding miss black. I have no doubt that you will become a prominent person in the future. Now then students time for you all to practice as well." Once the professor finished some of the more prideful students tried imitate what I did.
However as most would expect the feather made no reaction at all, thus leading then to slowly take out their wands with an embarrassed blush on their faces.
The rest of my charms class consisted off magical theory and at the end a small amount of time to practice spell learned.
Once the lesson ended students began to move towards their next class. In my case transfiguration.
Stepping through the door of the transfiguration classroom I found that like usual I was one of the first to arrive.
Seeing the cat sitting on the professors desk I couldn't help but approach. I bent my knees slight to put myself so our eyes were level.
" an animagus huh? It's kinda cool, I wonder what my animal will be? Don't worry professor I won't tell the others" the little cat showed some surprise before giving a little nod.
Since my little show of knowlage was over I decided to take a seat closer to the front of the classroom.
As the time for the lesson to began closed in students began poring in one after another.
Yet two seats were still empty.
Harry and Ron ran through the door. " look Harry the professor isn't here we're fine." As the two walked up to the teachers desk which just so happened to have two empty seats infront of it.
The cat sitting on the desk contorted and turned into a person as it jumped off the table. " that's bloody brilliant!" Ron exclaimed.
" why thank you mister Weasley but perhaps I should transfigure mister potter into a watch so never of you are late again. Take your seats." McGonagall is a stern woman.
I could also see that she was eying me cautiously. I couldn't blame her she probably thought I was a danger to other students, already effected by the black madness.
"Today students you must transfigure a match into a needle. Now transfiguration is a complicated magic which when mastered can rival any form of magic" Professor McGonagall went on to explain the dangers of transfiguration magic and how no steps should be skipped.
"Miss black do not be foolish use your wand" before I could even attempt to transfigure the match the professor was on my cases.
Releasing a sigh I turned to face her. 'Oh how I hate having to repeat myself' thinking to myself I turned to face her.
" you see professor I'm doing an experiment to see if I can use magic without a wand. I think that if I learn to use it without a wand I'll become a better witch in the end" showing I sweet smile the professor fell into thought.
" miss black I agree that one could become a better witch through not using a wand, but such control over magic is very hard for one to achieve especially one so young." She sounded worried a lace of concern in her voice.
" don't worry professor, I can't pass this year I'll start using a wand next year. I've been taking my theoretical knowlage very seriously and already remember all the books contense." My reasoning seem to have won her over but she was most definitely still concerned.
" very well miss black please continue with the task." Looking at the needle I couldn't help but let out a little sigh.
'McGonagall is very stubborn I'm surprised she was so easily convinced' once my thoughts ended I returned my attention to the match.
Placing my hand over it I began to move my hand in the fashion which was shown to us whist imaging the change that would happen to the match stick.
Low and behold the match began to morph into a crooked match with numerous dents.
McGonagall who wasn't far away looked over at my results.
" not bad for a first attempt miss black, especially when wandless. I'm sure you'll become a great witch remember throughout the era" their was some softness in her voice, no doubt she we remembering about Sirius black and James potter.
She must have been thinking something like 'Black and potter at it once again' .
I continued practicing until the lesson ended. Although I couldn't get the dents out I was able to straighten it out.
Hermione was the only person who managed to produce a better match then me. However most just thought that because I wasn't using a wand I couldn't beat her and beating everyone else was already a miracle.
Leaving the classroom I decided to head towards the library I need to pick up books on the Disillusionment Charm. The books on Legilimency and Occlumency where in the restricted section.
If I wanted any chance of getting the books I needed to be able to peform the disillusionment charm.
