Kapitel 28: The Save

"Watch out," Davien called out.

"Bel," her mother cried, the panic in her voice as clear as day.

Davien took a step forward, moving closer to her in one long stride. He pulled her to himself, and Bel's face hit him square in the chest. With her pressed against him, he stretched out his hand to catch the orb.

All this happened in a second, and Bel was too stunned to react. The orb had been over her head, which meant it would have hit her right on the head.

"Phew, that was close. Are you okay?" He asked, looking down at her as she stood stunned and unmoving in his embrace.

Bel jumped away immediately, hating the way she felt flustered. That was embarrassing, and the worst part was her mother had a front-row seat to this. He got her a gift and saved her; she was finding him more annoying by the second.

"I am okay. I didn't think about that," she said, trying to distract herself from the embarrassing moment.

"It is fine, no harm done, and I caught it." He stretched it to her again, "Light it up."

"Yeah," she mumbled absentmindedly, grateful that she could concentrate on something rather than what just happened.

She could hear her inner voice scolding her for not considering that. Aside from injuring herself, she could have also broken the light orb. She wasn't trying to impress Davien, but the last thing she wanted was to look like a fool in front of anyone.

There was also the fact that a light orb was extremely rare, and she wouldn't be able to get it back. It would be easier to agree to the marriage than to find one.

Bel zoned out the voice and just concentrated on channeling her magic through the orb, and when it lit up, she was less surprised this time. She slowly let go of it, and the orb floated to the top. The golden hue gave off the light at sunset; it was a beautiful color.

She looked at Davien and could see him nodding his approval. She hadn't infused the orb with too much magic this time, and she could clearly see that was a good thing.

"You two lovebirds should get to it. I will be in my chambers if you need me," Queen Eleanor said.

"Mother," Bel yelled out in horror.

Her mother giggled and waved to Bel before she promptly made her way toward the main part of the castle, leaving her standing with Davien and a few guards.

Bel glared at him, and he didn't flinch, didn't even look surprised. She didn't know what to think of him, and it bothered her. So far, he had been nothing but extremely nice and considerate, and that pissed her off. If he was an ass, this would be much easier to deal with.

"Lead the way, please. I am in your hands." He smiled lightly, the tip of his fangs poked out of one side.

Now that there was proper lighting, she could get a very clear look at his face. His eyes were what drew her attention the most. Aside from the red pupils that were hard to miss with vampires, he had slightly downturned eyes that gave his eyes a dreamy look.

For several reasons, this pissed Bel off more than she wanted it to, and she refused to acknowledge the fact that she liked his eyes. She turned her gaze to the side a little forcefully and stomped out through the pillars as she ventured into the castle compound.

The space around the castle was huge, and this was where she had spent all of her life. If she didn't hate Davien, she would have enjoyed giving him a tour, but right now, all she wanted to do was end this as soon as she could.

The walk around the castle lasted for a few minutes, and Bel didn't say anything. She didn't even talk about the sights they passed; she just passed them without a moment's glance.

The guards kept some distance as if to give them privacy, but they were still within hearing distance, so it didn't exactly make any difference. However, she was glad they were there. She would rather lose a finger than be left alone with this vampire.

Suddenly she spun, facing him as she stopped walking. Davien looked visibly taken aback, and he leaned backward as he stopped walking to avoid bumping into Bel.

"Is something wrong?" He asked, genuinely concerned. He looked over her shoulders and behind himself to see if there was something he missed.

"You can drop the act," she declared.

He frowned, "What do you mean?"

"Whatever this is, you don't have to pretend to be so nice."

"Oh, you think I am nice?" He asked with a quick smile. "I know someone who would beg to differ."

She took a step forward, "Why do you want to marry me? I doubt I am your only option or first option for that matter. You're the vampire prince; I am sure you have tons of women vying for your attention and would be the happiest to marry you. It doesn't have to be me."

He closed the gap between them, and Bel instinctively took a step back. "Why wouldn't I want to marry you?" He asked.

"You are avoiding the question," she said darkly. "Vampires don't go for humans. There is no single incident where there has been a legal marriage between a vampire and a human. Maybe carnal knowledge, but not marriage. I doubt that suddenly changed."

"You make it sound as though we are opposed to marrying humans," he said.

"Again, you're avoiding the question. I asked why do you want to marry me. According to your mother, you really want to marry me. That doesn't make any sense; you don't know me. This is officially our first meeting, and according to my mother, I have been nothing but rude to her 'special' guests. You have no reason why you'd want to marry me."
