"Fire!" My servant ordered the cannon crew, raising his saber into the air. Instantly, the cannoneers obeyed, firing in quick succession at the approaching horde of vampires.

*BOOM*

*BOOM*

*BOOM*

*BOOM*

The large cannons unloaded their payload into the approaching horde of 400 vampires, a number that outnumbered my servants troop 4 to 1. However, I remained relaxed as I sat near my servant, who commanded his troops with expertise. He ordered the ones with large shields to take up the front, while those armed with longer weapons took positions behind them. But he didn't stop there; he also had the servants take the sides and back of the formation, aiming to prevent any attempts by the vampires to flank them.

"Commander, I have to go join the troop. Please excuse me," my servant said, charging forward with saber in hand as he joined the troops before the vampires made contact. The first contact started with our troops having the upper hand, but it soon became more even as servants ran out of magic and human soldiers grew exhausted. However, this didn't mean they started to accrue losses. I made sure the troop understood that heroic sacrifices were foolish and instead fostered a doctrine of 'Survival and perseverance,' impacting their offensive but enhancing their defensive ability. This was evident in the way every single soldier was able to block or deflect a vampire's attack.

After a while of watching the servant lead his troop in combat, I found myself impressed. The saber-wielding servant proved he was more than just a leader as he left many vampires sliced to bits, only to be finished off by the troops that followed him.

Finally, the last vampire was slain, and the servant approached me, offering a salute as he spoke aloud.

"As you can see, Commander, the northeast border area is safe under my watch. Thank you for your visit," the servant declared. I nodded in acknowledgment, but before I could materialize the words, I noticed a bird circling above, a blood-red letter clenched in its beak. I quickly signaled for it to fly down, noting the third eye it possessed. Taking the letter from its beak, I knew full well what it was.

"You are formally invited to Marceline's birthday party. Yep, it's that time again already," I thought calmly as I received the invitation. With one final wave of my hand, I bid farewell to the northeastern border patrol leader and immediately teleported to Bastion instead thrusting my monthly inspections to another close aid of Emma once I returned a got prepared.

The next day, I wasted no time opening a portal to the Nightosphere and stepping into the dinner hall, which was decorated with the usual birthday spiel: confetti, streamers, and all the other festive decorations. In my hands, I clenched two things: a large crystalline jar containing some colorful, glittery gas, and a simple book about the basics of ice magic. Marceline had asked me for it last year, but her father had denied her, saying she could only learn magic at 14—the age she was turning today.

"Hey Brook, what's up!" That's all I could hear before Marceline, in what would have been a blur to a normal human, came and gave me a hug. It felt quite awkward with the stuff in my hands, but Marceline didn't seem to mind as she initiated the hug.

*Happy birthday, Marcy. I've been pretty good lately as we have been able to push the vampires from our lands,* I said as I placed my gifts on the table. Then, I extended my hand for a fist bump with Marceline, which she accepted joyfully. However, the mood seemed to drop as Abadeer entered the room, dressed in his classic dark suit and red tie.

"Glad to see you here. Let's eat," I said, trying to lighten the mood. With that, we all sat down to eat. Abadeer did what he did every year, returning my human body to allow me to eat—a gesture I much appreciated. However, I couldn't ignore the heavy atmosphere between Abadeer and Marceline.

"So are y'all okay or did you two get into another fight like you usually do?" I asked causing Marceline to stand up abruptly and point towards her dad with a upset face.

"He still won't let me leave the Nightosphere!" Marceline said, sounding upset. Before she could complain more, Abadeer spoke, seeming unbothered, but I could see a bit of worry in his eyes—a fatherly care that most wouldn't even take notice of, smothered by the evil emotions emitted to him via his connection with the amulet that gave him his powers.

"Why would I let you out into the world when you can't even swing your axe right?" It was question that quickly shut up the angry Marceline but before the poor girl could cool down he spoke again.

"Though I could be persuaded if Brook is willing to watch you"
