Black Rose Blooms SilverCyberQueen_Jolyne
Chapter 126
Chapter Text
The first sign that something had gone wrong with Team RWBYP's mission was the sound of an explosion ripping through the mountain where the aptly named Mountain Glenn had once been. The second sign came immediately after in the form of said mountain disintegrating in a hellish conflagration upwards that left a volcanic ash cloud hanging over the distance like a depiction of the end.
The third sign was a distant roar that shook the windows, immediately setting off grimm detectors all over the city and sending everyone into a panic as the warning system blared out for everyone to evacuate to the nearest shelters and for all Huntsmen and Huntresses to mobilize against the highest rated grimm incursion ever detected.
"Ah, so that's what the plan was," Ozpin murmured faintly, his voice sounding odd to his own ears as he watched the horizon, the mountain in the distance becoming what looked like a molten pile of rock and slag while an utterly massive wyvern heretofore entirely unknown for centuries ripped itself free and shook itself off. It was… horrifying. Terrible. One of his processors had given her life to put the thing down, to so much as seal it away in the distant past… and now Salem's machinations had brought it to life again. And he…
Ozpin was so much weaker than his predecessor had been, his magic thinned to the point that it was all he could do to maintain a backup reservoir within The Long Memory- and even then, that was maintained solely due to the multiple generations that it had been in his possession.
He couldn't fight the wyvern. Not as he was. He could do some damage, surely, but… did he have enough to truly kill it? To end it without ending himself?
Ozpin didn't know, and so he stood there, paralyzed as he stared out of the window and into the distance.
"Oz! We have to do something! I've already mobilized the fleet to attack the grimm attacking the city but there's been a chain of explosions happening in Vale's subway network too!" Ironwood yelled, shaking Ozpin's shoulder and startling him back to the present again, making him shake off his daze and take a few, crucial breaths to try and stabilize himself again. "There's not enough men, not enough Knights! Mobilize the students, the faculty- anything dammit!"
Ozpin blinked, not comprehending for a moment as he pulled himself out of his introspection and tried to regain a semblance of control over his emotions and mental state- when was the last time he'd faded so far in response to a crisis? It had been… decades. Not since the Great War, or even longer than that, possibly. "Yes- I… you're right. As much as I hate to do this to my students, the entirety of Vale is at stake- James, have you any word on the specialists? They were supposed to arrive today, were they not?"
"They were- I've sent them the order to redirect their flight and divert all their attention to stopping that thing. I've ordered the soldiers to handle the city itself, and all my mecha forces to keep watch along the walls," Ironwood answered, gritting his teeth and clenching his fist as he looked out of the window, taking over the watch while Ozpin made the announcement over the school's loudspeakers- surely, they already knew what was going on and were already chomping at the bit to put their training to use, but he had to make sure they did it sensibly .
"Attention all Beacon students and staff. We are currently experiencing a Level Thirteen grimm incursion. Fourth years, returning alumni, professors, and security staff, you have clearance to deploy as you see fit to defend the walls, the city, or to destroy everything approaching the walls at will. There is a Leviathan class grimm approaching the city. Do everything in your power to destroy it, slow it down, or prevent it from reaching the city entirely. Third years and second years, you have clearance to defend Vale, but do not leave city limits. First years, you are to defend the streets. Transfer students- I cannot order you to fight, but know that any and all aid you can provide is appreciated in this time of crisis. All of Vale is being attacked from every side. Dispatch as you see fit, and may the gods let us live to see tomorrow."
Ozpin sighed as the announcement went out, a few more button presses having uploaded the relevant real time tracking data to every scroll on campus such that they could keep track of the hotspots that needed reinforcements and what parts were the most vulnerable.
Currently, every part of Vale needed reinforcements, and every part was the most vulnerable.
"James, you have eyes on the Wyvern, do you not? Can you tell me what's happening? It seems to have stopped advancing already," Ozpin stated after a moment, standing by the window once more and frowning as he squinted off into the distance- from where he stood in the Emerald Tower, the Wyvern seemed so small as it thrashed around. It was… bigger than it should have been, if his memories were correct. His predecessor had fought it when it was merely large enough to dwarf perhaps a large apartment building, but…
"It's- there aren't enough drones in the air to provide adequate visual of the area, there's too many grimm swarming around," Ironwood answered, grimacing down at his scroll and looking between it and the absolutely horrendous flood of pitch black monstrosities that were in the air, circling around, attacking the walls of Vale- from where they were, it all seemed so far away that they couldn't even hear the muted thumps of the wall turrets as they attacked everything that came close to the walls, could barely even hear the sound of Beacon's defenses as they shot down the grimm that were attacking the school as the students, staff, and assorted defenders of humanity (in training) streamed out to the Bullhead docks or simply flung themselves out into the forest below using the Initiation catapults. "I can make out green flashes around the area, so I can assume that, of anyone still left in the area, at least Penny is alive. There's too much distance and too many grimm in the air to get a clear visual, though."
"Then we can only pray for the safety of those we sent there," Ozpin sighed, frowning heavily as he stood there, cane planted firmly on the floor and glaring out at nothing. "The students and faculty have mobilized with a small security force being retained. Team CMNE is waiting in the subfloor below the main lobby. All defenses are online and working at as high of an efficiency as we could expect. There is not much more that we can do, it seems…"
"For now. I need to get back to my command post- it's not efficient for me to be in here and relaying commands to my troops when I could be giving them orders directly from the flagship. You're… more than welcome to come with, unless now is what you consider to be a good time to do… that," James hedged around saying it out loud, motioning downwards towards the vague location of Team CMNE for a moment before returning his attention to Ozpin.
"... Now is as good a time as any, James. I wish I could send more reinforcements to ensure your safe travel back to your flagship but…" Ozpin motioned at the chaos overtaking the world below, shaking his head and sighing as he watched a Griffon explode into a cloud of smoke and feathers as one of the transfer students shot it out of the air with her sniper rifle.
Judging by the strength of the shot and how it knocked Miss Zedong out of her perch on top of one of Beacon's lamp posts… she was using some of Miss Rose's custom lower caliber ammunition.
He wished her well, as he did with everyone who chose to go out and fight instead of stay and defend. He also wished safety on those who decided to cut and run- cowards though they may be called, he couldn't fault anyone for choosing life over the immediate threat of being gruesomely murdered by grimm.
"Right. Well. Good luck, Oz," Ironwood sighed, running his hand through his hair as he sent a message to dispatch a Manta to his position. "Godspeed- I hope everything works out the way we planned it to."
"As do I, but we both know that none of what is happening today was as planned," Ozpin stated, sending a message to Team CMNE to send Cinder to the main elevator hub as the two of them headed the same way. "Good luck, James."
Ironwood nodded, taking the main elevator down to the lobby, opting to use the back entrance which had a larger open area that a Manta could use as a landing pad, while Ozpin took the secondary elevator and simply stood there as he descended down to where Team CMNE was waiting.
He hoped that this day would not end with more fatalities than it already had.
