Black Rose Blooms SilverCyberQueen_Jolyne

Chapter 33

Chapter Text

"Miss Rose. Miss Valkyrie," Professor Goodwitch deadpanned as she stood before the two smoking, soot-covered girls and examined the wreckage that was their latest Dust experiment. From what she could see, they'd blown a hole large enough to fit an Alpha Sphinx through several walls, culminating in the blast having gone straight through to the outside of the building- fortunate then, that they were all on the fourth floor and not somewhere that people would get caught in the blast.

Fortunate indeed that no one else had been in the path of the initial reaction, and that the blast itself had-

She stopped, narrowing her eyes as she took in the scorch marks that seemed to ring the entire lab in a straight line- the blast marks entirely focused in one direction, the way it all cut off after reaching where the two girls' table should have been before it was utterly annihilated…

Had… they somehow stopped the explosion from moving in a certain direction?

"Explain to me exactly what happened here," Professor Goodwitch continued, pursing her lips in discontent as she returned her gaze to Ruby and Nora, both of whom looked rather contrite- not because they'd blown up a chunk of the school in a massive Dust explosion, but because Professor Goodwitch had found them first . "What were you thinking? That explosive mix could have demolished the building if it had hit a support column or a load bearing wall! As it is, it's already been destabilized to the point that this lab won't be usable for another few weeks!"

"S-sorry…" Ruby murmured out, looking down at the floor and poking her fingers together in a display of childish remorse, her ears flopping and tail hanging limp as her cloak drew itself up around her as if trying to provide comfort. "We were just trying out a new mix for Nora's grenades… um… the Lightning Dust reacted really badly with the explosive components… and it… went off…"

She winced a little bit, one leg toeing the floor in remorse as she recalled the incident- everything had been going fine at first, with Ruby and Nora trying to figure out how to best make either a grenade launcher or a hammer for the grimm girl without overlapping too much with Nora's specialty- Ruby wouldn't have minded getting to make her own customized copy of Magnhild, but at the same time… she wanted to be more original than just copying a friend's weapon. Sure, she had a lot of weapons that were based on first prototypes that a bunch of Signal students left behind at first (Mr. Bronze had collected a lot over the years) but- this was a little different. It was why she didn't have shot gauntlets like Ember Celica, or shot boots like Talaria, or dual kama revolvers like Thief's Respite. She did have a dual sword bow, but she'd picked that up long before she met Cinder so whatever. Couldn't avoid that now.

"Mhmm. And tell me exactly what went off- how were you not supervised during all of this?" Professor Goodwitch asked, her eyebrow raised as she looked over the residue as she started putting the rubble back together with swift waves of her riding crop- making sure the Dust within transferred through the air and made sure the building was restored to how it was supposed to be, even with the scorch marks now dotting a good chunk of the walls and hallways in between the lab and the outside. She'd have to get a carpet repair service on the line… plus someone to repaint the walls… and make sure the lab was safe from any remaining residue that hadn't detonated earlier.

"W-well… we were supervised- Professor Spruce was making sure everything was going fine, and then she stepped out for like five minutes and Nora and I were trying to be safe but then I think I added too much Lightning Dust and all of the other stuff in the mix went off and then the rest of the grenades went off and… yeah…" Ruby cleared her throat, Nora nodding along and wincing as she rubbed one of her ears.

"Well, that seems to be Miss Rose's side of the story," Professor Goodwitch sighed, rubbing the bridge of her nose slightly before turning to the orange haired girl instead. "Miss Valkyrie, do you have anything to add?"

"... Not really! Sorry, it's a little hard to hear right now, there's a lotta ringing going on in my ears!" Nora almost shouted back, raising her voice quite a bit as she started smacking at the side of her head and made her Aura spark slightly with how hard she seemed to be trying to dislodge the tinnitus from her head. "Professor Spruce left, one of us bumped the thing, and everything went KABLOOEY! Real lucky Ruby put up a shield in time, huh!"

"A shield?"

"Ah, yeah…" Ruby raised her hand awkwardly, then suddenly formed a massive plate of grimm bone out of seemingly nowhere, the cursed material streaked with red lines and shadowy veins as it grew out of her palm faster than Professor Goodwitch could see. In the span of about a half second, the entire mass had sprouted from a blank palm to an almost perfectly flat and circular plate that definitely explained exactly why the explosion cut off so neatly. Professor Goodwitch almost flinched at the sudden appearance of grimm mass. Almost. She still twitched her eyebrow a little as Ruby reabsorbed the entire thing a moment later "I had to make it otherwise… um… y'know. Sorry… we didn't mean to! It was supposed to just be a slightly scaled up mix of Nora's usual grenade formula!"

"Well. It's good that you show adequate remorse for what you've done- but the fact remains that you continued to work on a highly unstable mix of volatile Dust and other explosive compounds without a professor or other weapons expert present," Professor Goodwitch sighed again, pulling a clipboard from seemingly nowhere as she started to write out what had happened and how the incident was being resolved. "You should have known to stop experimenting and return everything to as safe a state as possible until Professor Spruce returned. Either way… I am thankful that no one was hurt- that includes both of you."

She paused, then ripped two strips of paper from her clipboard and handed them to Ruby and Nora- detention slips, with dates, times, and supervisors written down in the fields. "Unfortunately, you'll still be having a week's worth of detention for destruction of school property- accidental as it was… you still detonated an entire pack of grenades in a weapons lab. You're lucky the floor didn't shatter from your antics. Report to Professor Mulberry after class. I expect you'll be doing quite a lot of cleaning, polishing, and essay writing for this incident."

Both girls sighed, letting out a simultaneous, reluctant "yes ma'am" as they took their punishment without protest- they knew they'd fucked up and, as much as they didn't want to have detention… well. They kinda deserved it for blowing up half a lab and also nearly knocking down a good chunk of one of the R&D buildings.

"Good. Now- go get yourselves cleaned up and head back to your dorms. Remember- detention tomorrow after class, for an entire week," Professor Goodwitch waved them along, her voice taking a slightly less harsh tone now that the entire thing was more or less resolved- she'd still have to do some repair work and use some of the academy's repair budget but… well. They had the repair budget for a reason. Accidents happened on campus, and frankly it was a miracle the entire school didn't explode every year from the amount of new and returning clashing personalities that made up its student body.

"Right! Will do!" Nora nodded once they'd been dismissed, grabbing Ruby by the wrist and dragging the two away down the hall until they got to the elevators, leaving Professor Goodwitch behind and leaving them free to deal with the rest of the day. And their teammates. Who'd probably like to know that the two of them now had detention for blowing up a lab.

Hm.

Ruby shuddered, making a face as they stood there and waited for the elevator doors to open.

"Yang's gonna be maaaaaad…" she mumbled, slumping down in continued defeat as her ears flopped down, her cloak fluttering nervously as she started to spread rose petals around on the carpet, chewing lightly on her lip as she stared at the floor and grumbled about getting in trouble. "She told me not to get in trouble and then I went and blew up a weapon lab aaaaa… we were being so careful too…"

"Ren's gonna be mad toooooo…" Nora whined out, sounding somehow even more puppyish as she crossed her arms and kicked lightly against the carpet, eyebrows furrowed and pouting as she shook her head. "I'm supposed to be better at explosives engineering dangit! I was top of the class at demolitions and explosives at Harbour Academy, blowing up all that stuff on accident isn't supposed to happen!"

"Well… we were using a super volatile mix based on my high explosive 38mm anti-Megoliath rounds… and then we added the Dust mix you use for your grenades… I guess we probably should have done more math on the potential effects," Ruby sighed, rubbing some of the soot from her cheek and grumbling at getting all dirty from the explosion. "Ugh… Dust math is haaaard … I had to do so much of it when I was making Crescent Rose's bullets… grenades are different enough that it's weird trying to compensate for the shape differences and even harder trying to figure out how the Dust math works out with the difference in purpose!"

"You tell me! Grenade math is way easier than weird trick bullets! How did you fit that much explosive material inside one bullet and still have room for all of the other stuff? Most Dust rounds don't come anywhere near that level of complexity!" Nora exclaimed, throwing her hands in the air and looking at Ruby with an expression of incredulity. "I thought Magnhild was the strongest thing out there that wasn't like, a full sized rocket launcher or a gunship cannon or something, but those giant bullets of yours are ridiculous!"

"Well… it was a lot of hard work… and a lot of sleepless nights watching bullet smithing lessons on my Uncle Qrow's teacher account," Ruby admitted, then shrugged with half a grin. "... Wanna try again after we're done with detention week? I'll get Weiss to help with the math?"

"Hell yeah!"
