===================================

Finally, the day of the exam arrived, Saturday morning.

Class A has Katsuragi? Class B has a policy of not expelling anyone. Class C has Yamauchi (decision), and Class D has Ryuen?

As I entered the classroom, the atmosphere was heavy. Normally, it would start at 8:30, but today it's starting at 9:00. Probably some consideration from the school's side. But the situation has changed.

"I want everyone to listen."

Hirata calmly opened his mouth with a composed air. Although he had engaged in such a verbal battle with Horikita yesterday, the dead atmosphere from yesterday wasn't as visible today. Yet, one couldn't deny it entirely.

"I came to a conclusion after listening to what Horikita said yesterday from my perspective. Who to cast the critical vote for... that's the biggest focus, right?"

"Is he planning to say something again?"

Horikita murmured from the front row. He must be planning to say something. Otherwise, he wouldn't try to talk in this tense atmosphere. At the same time, determination was visible in Hirata's eyes.

"First, I want to apologize for saying yesterday that I would cast a critical vote against Horikita."

Surprisingly, he bowed his head and apologized for his rudeness to Horikita. Horikita's evaluation among Class C students is relatively high. But at the same time, it must be the same for Hirata.

"There's no need for you to apologize. What do you mean by that?"

"You are a necessary student in the class. That's all I judged."

"Then, who did you see as unnecessary?"

"Yeah, I saw."

Hirata's decisive statement made Horikita swallow his words.

"...Could you tell us who that is?"

Slowly moving from his seat, Hirata stood at the podium, just as Horikita did yesterday.

"I love this class, and I think everyone is necessary. My conclusion won't change no matter what anyone says, but I also understand that won't solve anything."

After much deliberation, Hirata arrived at an answer.

"I want you to put my name on the critical vote."

Hirata is the ace of this class. There shouldn't be any students who would agree to that.

"Y-You can't do that!"

Michan, who is usually quiet and gentle, shouted. Following her, other girls also raised their voices.

"I'm okay with being expelled. I'm willing to sacrifice that much for now."

"What are you saying? Are you out of your mind?"

Hirata's statement made Horikita raise his voice unintentionally.

"Even if you can't decide who to expel, are you planning to sacrifice yourself? There's no student in this class who genuinely wishes for your expulsion. It's absurd for a key figure like you to leave. It's a ridiculous idea."

"Even so, I don't mind."

Class C is a mess. Hirata, after much thought, came up with this result. He made a decision that would sacrifice his own life for others. Horikita is the leader among the girls, but when it comes to the boys, it would be quite tough if this guy, who is the right and left wings of Class C, is gone. If the left wing is gone, the plane cannot fly with only the right wing. The reverse is also true.

"Putting a critical vote against Hirata-kun is out of the question!"

Shinohara and other girls defended Hirata.

"You gain nothing by defending me. I've already come to dislike all of you."

Wait, didn't he just say he liked this class?

"I... I'll vote for Hirata!"

Yamauchi shouted, perhaps as a final struggle. Then, after a long silence, Chabashira-sensei entered the classroom.

After the voting ended, the sound of Yamauchi's nervous tapping became annoyingly audible.

"H-Hey... quiet down, Haruki."

Ike whispered to him.

"Y-Yeah, I get it."

Yamauchi seemed unable to calm down, perhaps because of the looming threat of expulsion.

"Hehehe, it seems like your expulsion is almost certain."

"What? I won't be expelled."

Yamauchi turned around ominously.

"Most likely, many students in this class have written your name on their ballots."

Koenji provoked Yamauchi. But then, Hirata spoke up.

"That's not true. This time, it's me who's going to be expelled."

"Are you still saying that? You're completely clueless."

"...What do you mean?"

Koenji smirked and took out his phone, showing it to Hirata.

"I received a message. It says, 'I think Hirata-kun plans to sacrifice himself and get expelled tomorrow. He might behave badly towards everyone, but it's not his true intention, so please believe and only put praise votes for him.' I wonder if it reached everyone except you and Yamauchi-kun?"

"W-What...?"

Receiving this, Yamauchi must be thinking something. Slowly standing up, he turned to face Koenji. His face revealed hidden opportunities.

"Heh."

Facing Koenji like that, Yamauchi chuckled.

"...No, can I talk... it's not me who's going to be expelled."

"Oh, really? Tell me why."

Not being able to tolerate being trifled with, he stood up and spoke.

"Twenty or thirty people put a critical vote against me, right? It's cruel treatment even though I didn't betray you all! But it's fine, I forgive you."

Giggling, he patted Ike's shoulder.

"Sorry for causing you so much worry."

"Y-Yeah."

He probably doesn't really worry about it. He probably wishes he would disappear. Or does he think he'll get praise votes from Sakayanagi?

"Do you seriously think you'll get praise votes from Sakayanagi?"

When I asked, Yamauchi raised both hands dramatically.

"That's right! That's why it doesn't matter how many people wrote my name... I'm protected by Class A, haha."

Though Yamauchi pretended to be composed, his inner anxiety and agitation were visible.

"Why are you trembling so much then? Ah, you just made a verbal promise."

I smirked at Yamauchi.

"S-Shut up!"

"You seem quite anxious. Let me tell you something. Little girls aren't that forgiving."

"I know! But it'll be okay!"

"Hmm, but if you don't have any tangible proof, I can't argue if you didn't get praise votes."

"Guh, but it'll be fine!"

"Let's stop it, Rich Boy. If he says so, it'll be fine."

"I see, then I'll laugh if you end up at the bottom."

"Hahaha, Rich Boy, you have quite a mean personality."

Believing he'll receive praise votes, Yamauchi seemed relieved, but there's still a lack of composure and anxiety within.

"Quiet down, Yamauchi. Your voice echoed to the corridor. I've kept you waiting. Now, I'll announce the results of Class C."

The time for deliberation had come. Someone from this class... but it won't be Yamauchi.

Calm Hirata.

Observing Horikita.

Dusk-colored Kiyotaka.

The ever-relaxed Koenji.

And me, lying on my desk.

Each had their actions, but Yamauchi still seemed unsettled.

"First, I'll announce the top three. In third place, Jin Horagasaki."

Oh, I'm glad. Thanks, everyone!

"Next, in second place... Hirata Yosuke, it's you."

"Huh...!"

As his name was called, Hirata closed his eyes and looked up at the sky. It seems the year Hirata showed us wasn't just an illusion. But if Hirata isn't first, then who? It's already decided.

"And in first place, with an impressive 42 votes... Kiyotaka Ayanokouji, it's you."

"W-Why!"

Yamauchi was the first to react, questioning if there was a mistake with the critical votes. Horikita, sitting next to Kiyotaka, couldn't hide her unease either.

"And the student with the most critical votes, obtaining 36 votes, unfortunately, it's you, Haruki Yamauchi."

Yamauchi, thrown down the cliff, couldn't grasp the situation as he was informed of his expulsion.

"T-Thirty-six votes!?"

With this, it was clear that Yamauchi wouldn't receive any praise votes from Class A. Ah, this is amusing. For your information, the second-worst was Ike with 18 votes, and third was Sudo with 17 votes.

"No, why, why am I being expelled!"

Yamauchi shook off Chabashira-sensei's arm as he approached.

It seemed his two friends could do nothing but avert their eyes. They seemed to think that if Yamauchi fell, they would be in danger too.

"Why, why, why! In such a ridiculous exam!"

"You're free to think what you want, but this decision can't be revoked."

"Shut up!!"

Yamauchi screamed from the depths of his belly, roaring in disbelief at the reality.

"Y-Yeah, that's right! Sakayanagi, Sakayanagi, please listen! You promised to give me praise votes! Is it okay to break a promise like that!"

"Do you have any clear evidence of that?"

"I made the promise! At karaoke! I was there!"

"I understand your desire to believe, but that doesn't prove anything. Leave, Yamauchi."

"No, help me, dammit! It's because of you guys putting critical votes against me!!"

Yamauchi shouted at his classmates, glaring at them.

"Leave now. Your existence has been deleted. You're an ugly presence."

"I won't accept it! You're the ones causing trouble for the class! And you all put critical votes against me!!"

Gripping the chair he had, he swung it towards the class. I couldn't believe he was directing his rage at the entire class. The scene caused panic in the class. Timid girls like Mi-chan and Airi hid behind the boys, especially clinging to Kiyotaka, Sudo, and me. There was no girl seeking help from Hirata, who was currently unable to assist.

"Hey, idiot... are you sick or something!"

I couldn't help but shout out. As Yamauchi attempted to throw the chair, Horikita and Sudo braced themselves.

"Ugh, how pathetic. You're trash till the very end. A miserable, worthless piece of garbage like you just irritates me."

Koenji's incredibly high-level taunt, or rather insult, enraged Yamauchi. He shouted and hurled the chair towards us, then lifted his desk and prepared to attack Koenji.

"Ahhhh!"

As I was nearby, holding Karuizawa who was trembling and clinging to me, I kicked the chair flying towards Koenji with a back kick. He immediately understood what I was trying to do.

"Haha, piece of cake."

Koenji effortlessly caught the chair I kicked, crossing his legs elegantly as he countered Yamauchi's desk attack.

"Nice... Karuizawa, are you okay?"

"Y-Yeah. Thanks, Horagasaki-kun."

Koenji exuded an overwhelming pressure towards Yamauchi.

"You directed murderous intent towards me. Even if you were killed, you wouldn't be able to say anything, right?"

Yamauchi's legs trembled, and he collapsed to the ground, crawling and crouching.

"That's enough, Koenji. I won't allow this anymore."

Chabashira-sensei sensed the danger of Koenji's actions, stopped him, and Yamauchi screamed in agony right there.

"Uwaaah!"

And so, under the pitying gazes of his classmates, held by Chabashira-sensei, Yamauchi was dragged away, leaving the school in a miserable state.

The classroom now had an empty seat, which made it significantly different from usual. When one person stood up, everyone headed home.

"He's more severely affected than I thought."

Of course, they were talking about Hirata. He was still sitting in his seat, seemingly lost in thought.

"Hirata-kun... um..."

Mi-chan, worried, timidly called out to him, but Hirata just glanced lightly without saying anything. Unable to bear Hirata's state, the classmates quietly left their seats.

"Let's just stay quiet today."

A chat came from Hasebe, and everyone agreed.

While I was still picking at my nails in the classroom, I approached Koenji.

"Nice play there."

I said as I raised my pinky and thumb together. Koenji, with his feet up on the desk, winked and returned the gesture.

"Well, of course. After seeing something so ugly, you'd feel relieved not to have been injured."

"Well, anyway, when he attacked our classmates, thanks to you provoking him, no one got hurt. Thanks."

Koenji became the target of hatred to prevent other classmates from being attacked. I felt grateful for that.

"Hehehe, I don't recall doing such a thing, but well, if you think so, let's just leave it at that."

"Okay, see you, Rich Boy."

With that, I left the classroom. The expelled students were:

From Class A, Yahiko Totsuka.

From Class B, none.

From Class C, Haruki Yamauchi.

From Class D, Shiho Manabe.

That's three in total. I guess it was as I suspected for Class A.

...

After school, the back of the school building was quiet.

I was here because I was Called out by a certain someone.

"You were the one pulling the strings behind the scenes, weren't you, Horagasaki?"

"Well, yeah. Ichinose had been hoarding points, so I convinced Ibuki to use them."

"Hehe, you targeted Manabe, didn't you? She was screaming her lungs out."

"Just a coincidence, just a coincidence."

"So, you were saved by Ishizaki and Ibuki? That's both a blessing and a curse."

"Perhaps."

At that moment, a phone rang. The screen displayed Ichinose's name.

"Class B, everything okay?"

"Yeah, we concentrated the votes on Kanzaki, who volunteered to be the scapegoat, and decided on expulsion. It was touch and go, but everyone's safe... Hey, do you think someone else will disappear like this again?"

Ichinose asked with a hint of anxiety.

"It's possible, but..."

"Thank you so much, Horagaski-kun. It's all thanks to you."

Even over the phone, one could easily imagine Ichinose bowing in gratitude.

"Alright then, see you later, Horagasaki-kun."

"I'm just the mediator. Thanks should go to Ibuki, Ishizaki, and Ryuen, too."

With that, I hung up and headed to the dorm.

...….

On Monday, some students might have been expecting Yamauchi to show up at school, hoping that his threats were just empty. But reality was harsh. The number of desks in the classroom decreased by one, and Yamauchi's name was erased from the class roster.

There were no smiles on Hirata's face, and Sudo and Ike seemed downcast.

And so, we faced the final special exam of the year.
