Thane drummed his fingers against the large wooden desk he and Minerva were sitting down at. They had sat in almost complete silence for some time besides the occasional scribble for Minerva's quill as she filled out the paperwork Gorat had given her.
"A bit of advice Thane, read over every single contract you are given from this point forward. If you don't understand every single word on the page, hire someone who does and won't lead you astray. Most contracts in the wizarding world have some magical aspect making them much harder to void or maneuver out of."
Thane nodded but he wasn't really listening, he hadn't expected his first day in the wizarding world to be spent in a bank. After what seemed like an eternity the door to the room opened and a goblin teller walked in holding a silver tray in one hand.
"You ordered the Bloodline Exam correct?" The goblin asked to which Minerva nodded and gestured to the chair opposite of them. Taking the seat the goblin set the tray onto the table and Thane peered over to see the two items on the tray.
One was a long slender needle made out of silver while the second was a blank sheet of paper covered in a fine gem like dust. Picking up the needle with one hand the goblin held out his other, " I'll need a drop of blood for the examination."
Thane glanced at Minerva who nodded before he held out his hand for the goblin to take. With a surprising amount of care the goblin took Thane's hand and gently poked his pointer finger masterfully drawing a single drop of blood that he squeezed out onto the parchment sheet, "If there is any outstanding contract that matches your bloodline it will appear shortly."
Taking back his hand Thane sucked at the pinprick as he eagerly watched the blood stained parchment. For Thane every aspect was an absolute wonder, no matter how small or mundane. The thought of a world filled to the brim with people just like him was what powered him through the lonely nights where he cried himself to sleep after the nuns had berated and beat him. So when the parchment began to glow as lettering appeared out of thin air Thane's heart couldn't help but soar.
"Hm, your in luck there is an outstanding contract that matches your blood signature," The goblin muttered calmly as he picked up the parchment and gave it a glance over, "Let's see, ah yes vault-"
The goblin paused as his beady eyes widened in shock and he suddenly looked up from the parchment to stare at Thane, "I'm sorry but I have to fetch my supervisor, excuse me for a moment."
Before either Thane or Minerva could object, the goblin beat a hasty retreat out of the room with the contract in hand.
"Did I do something wrong?" Thane asked as he glanced at Minerva who was still staring at the door in surprise.
"No…in fact I think we are about to be pleasantly surprised." Minerva answered with a slight smile.
Not even a minute later the door opened again and the same goblin as before entered before holding the door open for a much older goblin with a silver medallion whose eyes immediately locked onto Thane with a heavy intensity, "Good day my name is Baldor, I am the day manager for Gringotts Wizarding Bank. Are you Sir Carter?"
Thane nodded which Balor returned in kind, "It is an honor to meet you Sir, however before we talk about the specifics of your situation I must ask if you trust the person accompanying you with matters of life and death?"
Thane blinked and he looked over at Minerva who stared back at him with a raised eyebrow, "The wizarding world, while wonderful is not without darkness. This is your new life Thane, guard it with zeal and make wise choices."
"O-okay" Thane said nervously before he gathered himself, "Would you please wait outside Professor McGonagall?"
Minerva smiled as she stood up from her chair, "Very well then, I'll await you outside."
Thane watched Minerva walk over to the door which was opened for her and closed promptly the moment she was out of the doorway.
"You're wise to listen to Professor McGonagall, if you are ever lost go to her for guidance she won't steer you wrong," Balor advised as he sat across from Thane and placed the contract from earlier on the table, "But sending her away was the right decision sometimes information can be more dangerous than a naked blade at your back."
Thane nodded but stayed silent trying to convey some shred of confidence.
Clearing his throat Balor slid the piece of paper across the table so Thane could read it, "Forgive our initial hesitation but considering the implication of your exam we were obligated to ensure the test was accurate."
Thane looked down at the piece of paper only to frown as he realized the contract wasn't written in english, "I'm sorry but I can't read this."
Balor nodded, "That is to be expected, the last known speaker of Faeric died several centuries ago. Fortunately, as one of Gringotts founding contracts, it had been translated and archived."
"So I have to take your word that your translation is accurate of the original agreement?" Thane asked hesitantly as Minerva's advice echoed in the back of his mind.
Instead of being offended Balor grinned and placed one hand over his chest while he raised the other into the air, "I Balor Songsilver swear upon my magic that I will not attempt to deceive, mislead, or confuse Thane Carter while negotiating the outstanding contract between the Fae Courts and Gringotts Wizarding Bank."
Thane's eyes widened as he watched Balor pulse with an eerie blue light and the air grew heavy with magic. Then as quickly as it came the pressure and light vanished, but in that moment Thane got a glimpse of what true magic looked like.
