Day by day passed, Ren found that everyone in the fourth squad had attitudes similar to Nishino; they only trained to maintain their physical and shooting standards. Apart from training time, they would spend their other moments having fun.
The only exception was Yuji Handa. Ren discovered that his senior was truly focused on developing his body every day. Although Ren still didn't know the reason, he continued to follow Yuji Handa for extra practice.
The schedule for the fourth squad's training was also straightforward. Monday was shooting practice, Tuesday was physical training, Wednesday was obstacle course training, Thursday was theory class, and Friday was a simulated war between two factions. There were no specific schedules for Saturday and Sunday.
In addition to following the daily schedule, Ren always spent a few hours practicing at the fitness center, then took the time to go to the library to read more books about monsters and other knowledge.
However, despite this, Ren still had a lot of spare time. He eventually developed new hobbies like reading newspapers and continuing his old hobby of tinkering with old electronic equipment, collecting some usable components, and then creating new electronic devices.
Ren's life for the past few days had been peaceful.
Until the second week of Ren joining the mercenaries under the leadership of Sasaki Enjiro, he read in the newspaper about the Trash Haunter's attack in the Komorebi Kuyo area.
"They've attacked that place... Could it be that they're looking for me now?" Ren couldn't contain his anxious feelings.
The boy tried to think positively; it was challenging to find an unidentified scavenger in this city, so it shouldn't be easy for them to trace him.
Even if they knew Ren had worked as a railway construction worker, they wouldn't know where he went because Ren joining the mercenaries was a secret known only to Kiyoshi.
"Wait, what if they find Kiyoshi?" Ren suddenly thought of a bad possibility.
"At least I should warn him," mumbled Ren. He didn't know if his guess was correct or not, but he still had to visit Kiyoshi.
Fortunately, it was Saturday, so there were no special schedules today. Ren wore long pants, a short-sleeved shirt, and a jacket, then went to the Oharu district. After arriving in the Oharu district, he found that the people here belonged to the middle-low-income group.
Their lives were slightly better than those living in the Komorebi Kuyo district, but the atmosphere of poverty and squalor still lingered. This could be seen from the pedestrians wearing old or second-hand clothes.
Not observing further, Ren continued to focus on finding a small shop named Sazatomi. For a long time, he couldn't find the shop, so Ren had to ask people around. He was then directed to a narrow alley.
Ren walked along the narrow alley and finally found a small shop named Sazatomi.
His heart raced as he saw the shop door open, but the atmosphere was eerily quiet. Ren slowly opened the shop door.
"Excuse me?"
No one was there, making Ren even more worried. He then walked inside. A foul odor immediately greeted him. With a complicated mind, Ren continued to walk towards the source of this smell. He found that the scent came from one of the rooms. He then discovered that the room was locked.
Ren stepped back and kicked the room door hard until it opened. He was instantly shocked to see the corpses of an elderly couple in an advanced state of decay. Ren immediately knew they were Kiyoshi's parents.
The boy held a sense of guilt in his heart and tried to find Kiyoshi. After a while, he finally found his friend tied to a chair and unconscious. Ren cut the bindings and laid Kiyoshi down.
At that moment, Ren heard the front door of the shop being opened by someone. He walked slowly towards the front door. After a while, a hand attacked him from the darkness. Ren jumped, activating the felis ignis mode in an instant.
He ran out of the shop to lure the attacker to follow him. As Ren ran out of the shop, he heard gunshots. Ren tried to dodge them, but a bullet lodged into his right calf.
Ren felt the heat and pain in his right calf. He gritted his teeth to endure the pain and hid, waiting for the attacker to come out of the shop. Trash Haunter, the figure attacking Ren, casually walked out of the shop.
"If you don't want your friend to die, you better hand over that monster gene fluid, kid. I promise to let you go," Trash Haunter said while glancing around, trying to find Ren's hiding place.
Suddenly, a chair floated towards him. Trash Haunter avoided the chair. Ren ran towards Trash Haunter; the killer pulled out a pistol to shoot him, but Ren reacted first. He threw a stone at Trash Haunter.
The stone hit Trash Haunter's hand holding the pistol, causing him to accidentally drop it. As Trash Haunter was about to retrieve it, Ren stepped on Trash Haunter's hand and kicked his chin.
"Gah!"
Ren then struck Trash Haunter's cheek, causing the killer to stagger. As the boy was about to launch a second attack, Trash Haunter pulled out a knife and aimed it at Ren's neck. Fortunately, Ren caught Trash Haunter's hand and pulled it, then kicked Trash Haunter's stomach, sending him flying backward and crashing into the wall.
To ensure Trash Haunter's death, Ren picked up the fallen pistol and shot him in the head several times.
The boy regulated his breath several times, then walked back into the shop to check on Kiyoshi. However, he heard a sound from the direction of Trash Haunter's body. Ren furrowed his brow and turned.
Trash Haunter's fingers moved little by little. Suddenly, in a stiff manner, Trash Haunter stood up again. Something strange happened; his body suddenly enlarged, inadvertently tearing his clothes. Fur grew densely on his body while he began to hunch, and his face also changed drastically.
"What the hell is happening?!"
Trash Haunter transformed into a werewolf. This was completely beyond Ren's understanding. Shouldn't he be dead already? How could he be alive again?
Was this the result of a new experiment or what?
Ren didn't know, but he knew that he was in danger now. He didn't think long before escaping from the werewolf. However, the werewolf seemed to notice and chased after him.
Bullets were fired repeatedly; Ren tried to injure the werewolf but failed. The werewolf's defense was excellent; its skin seemed as tough as a typical monster's skin.
"Damn it!" Ren cursed and threw his pistol after finding out that its ammunition was depleted.
He then ran through the narrow alleys, trying to make it difficult for the werewolf. However, the werewolf leaped onto a house and continued to pursue him.
Ren, seeing this, then realized that he couldn't keep running away. He needed to try to defeat the werewolf in a one-on-one fight.
When facing Hell Hound, Ren was saved by Mizuha and didn't get a chance to personally fight the monster. However, now there was no one to save him, and he needed to fight alone.
"To overcome challenges in the future, this is a trial I must face," mumbled Ren, who then stopped running.
