Kapitel 12: Chapter 12 : I want to study you

"What do I desire?" Emory repeated, puzzled at the sudden question thrown at him by Gabriel

"We all want something deep down, for me I want to find my father and watch the traitors of heaven get judged for their crimes"

"What do I want huh? I guess I just want to be able to make my mom happy and be able to ease her burdens. Aside from that, I think I am good. The records have already changed so much about me in so little time." Emory said, drumming his fingers on the table continuously

"Really? Is that it? Protection. But still I sense..no I am certain that that isn't all, is it Emory?" Gabriel asked while maintaining eye contact with Emory

"Yeah that's pretty much it, I can't have a happy mother if the fallen and Gods as Michael described are roaming free can I?"

"I guess not. In due time you will realize what it is you truly desire and on that day I hope to I am there you witness it" Gabriel said as he downed the bottle of water

A bell rang, and then a voice on the speaker soon followed saying "Order number 167 please come to the counter"

"167, that's us!" Gabriel said gleefully, unlike Michael who was always so straightforward and blunt in everything he does, Gabriel likes to dabble. He found humans and their culture very interesting, especially their foods, even if angels need not eat or drink to survive he loved eating them nonetheless and his favorite food to eat were cheeseburgers, his mouth waters just at the mere thought of them.

The two walked up and took their order, while Gabriel decided to enjoy his 'feast' at the diner, Emory opted for a to-go option because he did not want to get home late.

"Be seeing you around Emory Carson" Gabriel waved Emory goodbye before taking a huge bite out of his burger

Emory got home and to his surprise, his mother got home before him and she had made dinner. It was rare for Mirianne to get home that early(even if it was quite late, it was early compared to the usual time she gets home, which usually falls around the early a.m.).

"Mom? Y-you're home early today" Emory stuttered nervously. He should not be returning from school this late in the evening, he knew that but what he didn't know was that Mirianne would come home that early.

"Yes Emory, yes I am" she deadpanned

"W-why?" Emory gulped. He had a reason for coming home late; his part-time job, but it wasn't a reason that would get him out of his current predicament. Mirianne has always been against the idea of him working while in school especially since she still thought he had worrying health conditions, she believed it was a parents duty to provide for their children and it was a child's duty to make their parents proud and in Emory's case that meant staying in school and keeping to the top of the class thus retaining his scholarship.

"Why? Can't I come home and surprise my son with a home cooked dinner with his dearest mother. Come, have a seat and eat, the food is cold but who's to blame for that " she said, now staring down Emory as she crossed her arms. Emory sat down, and placed his to-go cheeseburger on the floor, trying to hide it from his mother's gaze "So would you tell me where you are coming from and why you're still in your uniform by this time?" She continued

"Um, I was hanging out with a friend" Emory said " we had this..um… school project and we ended up working on it and before we knew it, it was late already" Emory continued

"School project?" Mirianne asked

"Yes" Emory answered as he began drumming his fingers on the table.

Mirianne sighed as she stood up and walked over to Emory "What is going on with you Emory?"

"Nothing mom"

"It's not nothing, I'm your mother, I know when you're not telling me something, and I know that when you lie, you drum your fingers on anything you can find. You can talk to me" she said as her eyes related and her expression changed from a scolding face to a sympathetic face "Is it a problem at school? are you in a gang? Or is it a girl. I know girls like tall boys so they must be a few that are into you right?"

"I am not in a gang mom, neither am I facing problems at school and its definitely not a girl that's bothering me" Emory said

"So what is it then?"

"....Nothing is wrong mom, I really was at my friend Liam's place" Emory lied causing Mirianne to sigh in defeat

"I'm going to bed, make you to eat as much as you want. And also my cooking tastes better than any cheeseburger ever could" Mirianne said as she resigned to her room

Emory let out a little laugh at his mother's last comment, he could never get anything past that woman, but she was right. Her cooking was the best thing Emory had ever tasted and no cheeseburger would ever come close.

****

Emory sat in class staring out the window, lost in thought he had mixed feelings about keeping his mother in the dark about everything that had been happening recently, on one hand he felt like she had a right to know as his mother and on the other he felt like involving her would put more worries on her head, her baby boy fighting fallen angels and staying in the company of two archangels.

"Hey" a low toned gentle voice suddenly interrupted his soliloquy. Emory looked up from his desk to see a freckled face green-haired girl staring at him. Emory was taken aback by this strange occurrence, a girl had never willingly approached or initiated a conversation with him before.

"Um..Hello?" She greeted once again, this time waving her hand in front of Emory's face, unknown to him, he was staring at her in a daze.

"Hi!" Emory unintentionally exclaimed

"Well you're usually excited today, aren't you" She said as she pushed up her round glasses up the bridge of her nose

"What do you mean unusually excited, I am always excited. Excited about the day, the night even about being able to breathe the fresh air" Emory rambled

"..Right, well I am Athena" she said as she offered her hands out in a handshake, Emory took her hand and shook it. Emory knew who she was, in fact he knew her name. She sat two seats ahead of him, she was Emory's crush for two straight years before he finally gave up and lost interest. Athena wasn't the quietest girl, she could be called loquacious even but she was smart, she was always just behind Emory in the class academic ranking and unlike other girls she didn't just talk, she talked about interesting and knowledgeable things.

"Athena, like the greek goddess Athena?" Emory inquired

"Yes exactly like the goddess, my parents are obsessed with all these mythological jumbo stuffs, so they decided to name their only female child after a goddess. It's not a bad name but they could have done better in my opinion" Athena said while taking a seat on a chair she dragged closer to Emory's seat.

"It's a nice name, would you have had them name you 'Emily' ?" Emory said jokingly

"Oh God no" Athena giggled. Emory felt proud of himself because he made her laugh, he remembered reading somewhere that making a girl laugh is the first step in getting closer to said girl.

"Since when did you become such a talker, and even a joker still. You were always so shy and…" she asked

"Small?"

"Reserved" Athena corrected Emory

"I guess I just….out grew my shell" Emory said

"Oh you grew all right" Athena said whilst sizing Emory up with her eyes. Emory chuckled nervously at her remark

"So why did you approach me" Emory asked, his expression grew so slightly tensed

"Oh, easy big boy I bear no harm.I can talk to my fellow classmate can i not?"

"You had three years to do that, why now?" Emory pressed further

"Well it's simple, nothing too difficult or strange. I want to study you" Athena said as a smirk curved into place on her face
