Kapitel 50: Chapter 50: Toxic Gas?

These past few days have been tough for Charles.

Despite being prepared for the extreme heat, the reality of its arrival still overwhelmed them.

The high temperatures were terrifying; even with reflective sheets blocking the sun and some cooling equipment and medicines, they were still suffering greatly.

Three of the relocated disaster victims had already succumbed to the heat. While no one from Charles's group had died, they were all drained of energy, dizzy and weak.

The death toll in other buildings was likely high as well.

The reason the corpses hadn't been fully cleared was due to people continuously jumping or being thrown from the buildings.

Just moving from the fourteenth to the seventeenth floor left Charles drenched in sweat. In fact, even lying in bed did little to stop the relentless sweating.

Charles approached David's door, feeling weak but trying to sound energetic: "David, are you there?"

At the time, David was playing God of War, having received a PS5 with a bunch of game discs as a check-in reward. However, due to limited power supply, he could only play the PS5 for a short time each day, essentially replacing his computer gaming time with the console.

Hearing the alert from the surveillance terminal that someone was at his door, David paused his game and walked over. He saw Charles on the monitor, looking disheveled and anxious. "I'm here," David said. "Are you okay, Charles?"

"Haha..." Charles's laugh was strained. "Not great, but I'm getting by. The food you've been eating these days has made us all very envious."

"Just some trivial stuff," David replied nonchalantly.

"For you, maybe, but for the outside world, that's like a rare treasure," Charles sighed. "These days, people downstairs have been putting a lot of pressure on me."

Hearing Charles's somewhat complaining tone, David asked with interest, "Oh? Who's been giving you a hard time?"

"Your daily feasts make the people downstairs think we have abundant food. That officer Alfred has been hinting these past few days that I should contribute to the nation."

Charles gave a bitter smile. "I can't exactly betray you, right? But I can't keep saying we have no food while delicious smells keep wafting down from upstairs."

Alfred had indeed been visiting him frequently. At first, they thought it was a show of strength to the people downstairs. By the second day, they felt it was bravado. On the third day, they thought it was about keeping up appearances, but now on the fifth day...

They genuinely believed they had an abundance of food. Otherwise, how could they eat like that? Even if they really had that much food, they should be conserving it, not knowing how long the disaster would last.

"But I can't reveal your situation, Charles. I have my own difficulties."

Indeed, David had inadvertently caused trouble for Charles.

"If this continues, they'll start getting suspicious," Charles said. "Even if we really had food, it's impossible to have a continuous supply of fresh food without going out, right?"

In this extreme heat, food would spoil quickly. If the smells of various foods kept emanating from upstairs, the people downstairs would become suspicious.

David thought for a moment and said, "This is the downside of bringing outsiders in."

Even though Charles's group could be considered outsiders.

He glanced at his food list, noticing that the relatively mild-smelling item was the pig's feet rice he had already eaten.

The pig's feet rice wasn't in a takeaway form but a large pot of braised sauce with a lot of pig's feet and another large pot of rice – almost like moving a whole pig's feet rice stall into his kitchen. He had only eaten a small portion, storing the rest in the kitchen.

"So... my suggestion is, David, maybe you could tone it down a bit," Charles said somewhat bitterly. "I can't keep hiding this."

But asking David to do so was unlikely. He didn't have many mild-flavored foods left – mild in the context of the outside world.

They hardly had any food. Even if he just fried some vegetables in the kitchen, the aroma might be unbearable for those outside.

He couldn't starve like the people outside, could he? What would be the point of having this safe house then?

He swore after coming back to life that he would eat and drink well during this apocalypse. He wouldn't suffer anymore. He wouldn't go hungry again.

As he contemplated his next steps, a loud noise suddenly rang out.

It seemed another explosion had occurred in the distance, but there was a more terrifying sight – the sky suddenly darkened, obscuring the sunlight.

It was indeed time for sunset, but the darkness came too abruptly. A bolt of lightning streaked across the sky.

"What's... happening?" Charles, though in the hallway, heard the thunder from outside.

David quickly looked outside and noticed a gas spreading. The

world outside was a wave of heat, like a sauna constantly emitting steam. The gas, seemingly dyed a color, appeared greenish in the dark environment.

The gas looked poisonous! Toxic gas in this extreme heat?

He immediately released a floating surveillance device outside, floating it about three to four kilometers up.

This allowed him to monitor the entire nearby area. He wasn't overly alarmed, noticing that the gas was appearing far from them. It would take a long time for the gas to spread here.

David pondered for a moment and said, "It seems things are going to change soon. Charles, I remember you have some protective suits, right?"

Charles was momentarily stunned, seemingly unclear why David brought this up at the moment. He nodded, "Yes, I have some."

"Give me one, and I can trade you something you need," David said. "Also, in the meantime, have your people keep an eye out. If anything unexpected happens, put on the protective suits!"
