Kapitel 33: Chapter 33: The Military Arrives

A group of people, in a state of panic, ran back from a distance and quickly fled into the residential complex.

At first, David didn't know what had happened, but soon Charles arrived.

David couldn't help but ask, "What's going on outside?"

Charles, with a furrowed brow, seemed to be struggling with something. He said, "The military has arrived."

"The military?" David was also somewhat surprised to hear this.

Indeed, if someone like Charles, a 'big brother' in the underworld, could survive and live comfortably in these apocalyptic times, then it was impossible for the government to be completely destroyed by the apocalypse.

Even if the top-tier leaders were gone, the grassroots level remained. They could still step by step find their leaders.

If the top leadership was gone, there were still middle-level leaders.

Moreover, people in the military have better physical fitness and are more cautious about environmental changes. Although the oldest might not be able to withstand it, some in their forties or even fifties could survive if they weathered the initial severe drop in temperature.

So David believed that the military wouldn't just be wiped out. Their previous absence was due to the deadly large hail, not suitable for large-scale operations, and secondly, the nuclear power plant near Emeraldon had leaked, making it nearly impossible for them to move.

The nuclear power plant was to the north of Emeraldon, and as far as he knew, the nearest military district to Emeraldon was also in the north, so it was even more troublesome for the military to rush over.

But as the weather changed again, one of the difficulties naturally disappeared, allowing the military to enter Emeraldon.

Of course, it was impossible to drive in the current environment.

The roads, due to the presence of hail, were extremely rugged and uneven. There were even some particularly sharp ice crystals, making it impossible for vehicles to travel.

So people generally walked on foot, moving as slowly as if climbing a mountain.

It's possible that the military had already entered Emeraldon in advance but hadn't yet gotten a clear picture of the environment in Emeraldon, so they only appeared now as the temperature started to rise.

After pondering for a moment, David asked, "What do you think, Charles?"

"With just the few people I have, it's impossible to defeat the military," Charles said. "If the military really has come, then surrender. In this chaotic situation, the government won't be able to quickly figure out what's happened here. As long as I say I'm a resident of this building, they can't do anything."

"And according to you, David, the extreme heat apocalypse is coming soon. Soon, Emeraldon will return to its former state. It's just a temporary compromise for a couple of days."

"I have no objections," David said. "After all, this is your matter, Charles. But for me, you can tell the military there's no one living here. I don't want to deal with them."

"Okay," Charles said. "I'll also tell my men not to mention your presence."

"Let's leave it at that," David said. "The temperature should rise to zero degrees today, and tomorrow it'll be thirty degrees. The day after tomorrow, we might officially enter the extreme heat apocalypse. You can use these two days to prepare."

"David, is there anything you want?" Charles asked with a smile. "If I go out these next two days, I might look for various things that used to be useful, just in case."

"There's nothing in particular," David said. "Just focus on your matters, Charles."

Hearing this, Charles felt even more impressed by David. Not only did he know that the extreme heat apocalypse was coming, but he also seemed to have prepared for it.

He nodded and said, "Alright, I'll go and inform my brothers, let them know how to speak."

"Okay," David replied, and Charles left again.

David went back to the window, ready to observe if the military would come.

After waiting for an hour or two and still not seeing them, David began to prepare for his workout.

After exercising for more than an hour and sweating profusely, David took a shower. When he came out, he heard the surveillance terminal sounding an alarm.

He quickly dressed and went to the surveillance terminal, only to find Charles and a man in military uniform at the door.

They had come while he was taking a shower?

"Is there no one here?" the man in military uniform asked.

"Yes," Charles replied with an eager smile. "The families in this building left the country long before the disaster."

The man in uniform looked around, somewhat doubtful, and asked, "Why isn't this door locked?"

A solid steel door stood before him; no family would have their door made like this.

They had hurried over after hearing gunshots nearby. In today's world, having a gun was too dangerous.

Such weapons must be in the hands of the military!

They had chased all the way here, but their progress was slow due to the rugged roads and the risk of being injured by ice crystals.

His team was not large, but they were regular soldiers with considerable combat power.

Moreover, if they ran into trouble here, more military forces would inevitably come. If the other party wasn't foolish, they wouldn't think of confronting the military.

He walked up to the door and knocked, finding the sound echoing like solid steel. He took a gun from a subordinate and tapped the door with it.

"Really solid," the man in uniform turned back to Charles. "Are you sure you haven't seen those armed thugs?"

"I've heard you have quite an influence around here," he added.

Charles shook his head. "I was doing well because I used to trade in protective gear. I could explore outside in that weather with protective gear, but I don't have a gun."

"There are indeed many armed violent gangs around here, but during the hail, they could only occasionally come out when it stopped."

"I have tools to go outside, but no weapons. They have weapons but no tools to go outside, so our area was relatively peaceful. Now my tools are useless, but their guns are more powerful. I was worried about this, but fortunately, you've come."

He had already known the military was likely coming for the guns. How could he possibly leave the guns in this building?

Their guns had long been stored in a safe place. Even if the military searched here, they would find nothing.

The man in uniform was skeptical of Charles' words, but he also knew that under the current circumstances, it wasn't possible to forcibly take Charles away.

Because if Charles really had a weapon, forcibly taking him would likely cause trouble for his team.
