The next day.
Domed Arena.
As this was a private exchange rather than a public one, there weren't many spectators for this friendly match.
On Japan's side, besides the five team members, there were the Dragon King Longzaki and Tianshen Juzhenya.
On China's side, Ma Chenzong, Ms. Liuqin, Yun Kai, and the five trainers who stood out in the final selection comprised the entire audience.
Naturally, aside from the audience, there was also a professional referee to oversee the match.
The five important figures from both nations sat together on the left side of the field, while the five standout trainers sat on the right side to watch the battle.
The seating positions of these individuals provided a clear view of the ongoing battle on the field.
The seats for the players below were reserved for the second-string members of the two countries' teams.
On the China team's side, Fang Yuan and the others were already prepared, just waiting for the match to start.
When the time came, the referee walked to the center of the match and announced, "We'll start with a 6vs6 all-member showdown, with three from each side participating. The first battle will be Wutian vs. Mu Fan!"
Both the 3 battles of 6vs6 full-member showdown and the 2 battles of 3vs3 team fights had their participants and order predetermined by each side.
Neither side knew which player the other would send out or in what order, so the selection and arrangement were already a psychological gambit from the start.
As for the choice and battle order in the ring fight, these would be determined after the first two types of battles were completed, an aspect that further tested the team's personnel arrangements.
On Japan's side, a stubbled youth named Wutian was sent out first, and for China, it was Mu Fan leading off.
Wutian was a trainer who primarily used Rock Type, with Ground and Steel Series as secondary choices, while Mu Fan was a trainer who specialized in Ground Types.
Upon seeing his opponent was Wutian, Mu Fan felt an immediate surge of joy as, according to the data, his team lineup had a significant advantage over his opponent.
However...
As the battle commenced, something seemed increasingly off.
In terms of Pokemon nurturing, the two were evenly matched, but Wutian was clearly superior when it came to tactical arrangement.
Moreover, although Mu Fan was very proficient with Ground types, Wutian was extremely skilled with Rock, Ground, and Steel types!
"Mu Fan's understanding of Rock and Steel Types is obviously not as deep as Wutian's grasp on Ground Types," Shang Ren commented as he watched the intense battle and saw Mu Fan getting suppressed.
Fang Yuan watched in silence, unspoken. They couldn't be losing the first battle, could they? If he arranged the order and they lost the first match, it wouldn't look good.
What's more, at this point in the match, Mu Fan had surprisingly not used a single Pseudo Top-class Pokemon. His Nearly-Top Level Pokemon were powerful indeed, but, lacking ways to briefly contend with true Top-Level Combat Power, they couldn't dominate when facing opponents of the same level, making sound tactical arrangements essential when pure strength wasn't overwhelming.
And quite evidently, Wutian possessed experience and commanding ability that far exceeded Mu Fan's.
"No wonder this guy was so quiet in the chat group yesterday; he doesn't even have a single Pseudo-Top Level Pokemon..."
The weaknesses of a Daoist Successor began to show...
"This Mu Fan, he's a lot like his teacher. He has perfectly inherited all of his teacher's strengths," Ma Chenzong remarked from the spectator seats, looking at Mu Fan's battle. The Sect Leader of Evergreen Dojo had once been a top authority in Ground Type, but unfortunately, he also specialized only in Ground Types. In today's information-rich age, that was a recipe for problems.
Mu Fan clearly lagged behind his opponent in developing his Pokemon's secondary attributes.
In the end, the battle ended with a score of 5 to 6. Wutian had sent out five Pokemon, one still had some Physical Strength left on the field, and there was one more fully energized Pokemon, while on Mu Fan's side, all six were incapacitated.
"Wutian wins," the Referee declared, and Mu Fan stood in place, sweating profusely, his mindset unbalanced.
"You did well, but you're still lacking a bit," Wutian said with a scratch of his stubble, smiling.
In that moment, with Mu Fan's defeat, even King Longzaki from Japan's side couldn't help but smile at Yun Kai and say, "Your trainers from Hua Nation focus too much on inheritance. Just as the material said, here's another trainer who doesn't understand innovation."
Was Mu Fan uninnovative?
As a prodigy who had brought the Evergreen style back into prominence, he knew about innovation, too.
It's just that his supposed innovations within the Evergreen legacy hadn't surpassed the original doctrine of the Evergreen Dojo, resulting in their lack of prominence.
"Not so much different, are you?" Yun Kai spoke indifferently before turning his attention back to the field.
Mu Fan's loss had somewhat dampened the momentum on the China side, as the five observing Chinese trainers, who were the reserve second-team members, analyzed the battle with grave expressions.
Was Mu Fan weak?
No, he wasn't.
None of them had a team as strong as Mu Fan's, yet even with that, Mu Fan had lost. It only meant that Mu Fan's opponent was even stronger.
If it had been any of them, they couldn't have done better than Mu Fan.
This Mu Fan... despite the defeat, he remained a challenging adversary, still vastly strong.
At this point, Tang Xinlan entered the stage, and Mu Fan returned. Having lost the match, Mu Fan was in low spirits. While Zheng Hongyi and Shang Ren were unhappy with the defeat, they, as teammates, proceeded to comfort him.
"Yeah, it's just one match, don't worry about it," Fang Yuan said, "The next rounds are on us."
"Sorry." Mu Fan, looking like a sullen gourd, returned to his seat speechless after receiving comfort from the three. After months of hard work, and with several Pokemon nearing a Top Tier Domain, he was brimming with confidence, even contemplating replacing Fang Yuan as the leader. But now, Mu Fan felt he had been daydreaming.
