There were three kinds of sounds in the stillness of the moment. Coming from the left was the rhythmic tap of a shoe against the floor, the sound of a young man's step. Next to it, the sound of a woman's garment sliding between the folds, like the soft breathing of a silent companion.

And above these material echoes, the sound of two voices rising.

"Any word on the vampire?"
