Kapitel 13: Chapter 10: New Ideas

"Pfft, what a crappy spell, I don't want to learn this nonsense anymore," Hu Daoke spat and tossed the magic wand he was holding. When he learned about his own magical aptitude, he really had trouble accepting it.

He turned his head and just then saw Cheng Ziang, immediately feeling so furious he couldn't hold it in. So, he stepped forward, pointing at him and said, "Hey, it was you who stole my spot just now, wasn't it?"

Cheng Ziang coldly turned his head to give him a glance, showing a look of disdain, but he didn't say a word.

"That spot was reserved for Sister Moumou; you sure have some nerve," Hu Daoke became even more arrogant seeing that Cheng Ziang remained silent.

Still, Cheng Ziang didn't speak but waved the magic wand in his hand instead, indicating that he could use magic.

"Stop trying to scare me with that thing. Don't think I don't know that starting up a spell requires casting time. Take this iron fist of mine and let's see whether your magic is more powerful or my fists," Hu Daoke said as he swung his fist, lunging at Cheng Ziang.

Cheng Ziang was not panicked, but he stepped back slightly and waved his wand, silently mouthing spells, then immediately an invisible barrier appeared between him and Hu Daoke. Hu Daoke couldn't stop in time, and his heavy punch slammed into the barrier. It felt like hitting a hard steel plate—it didn't hurt, but the rebound sent him staggering back.

"What are you two doing?" Seeing two team members fighting, Tangmo, as the captain, finally displayed his responsibility, running over with hands on hips and loudly scolding them.

Luo'er didn't follow them; seeing the magic used by Cheng Ziang, he instinctively cast one as well. It was a shield spell, channeling magic to congeal around oneself and form a sturdy invisible wall to block enemy attacks. During the Second Otherworld War thirty years ago, the Otherworld forces had used shield magic in combination with cavalry charges to crush the defense lines of the multinational troops.

Unlike other spells, shield magic is a very common one. Since it's frequently used, mages from Otherworld continuously improved it, making the casting time much lower than other spells. A regular mage could almost instantly cast a first-level shield spell, while a skilled one could instantaneously cast second or even third-level shield spells.

Since Earth had not entered into an in-depth cooperation with Otherworld, the Magic Research Center could only teach students a very limited range of spells, most of which were auxiliary. For example, shield magic, and also silence magic, which targets an area to channel a spell that prevents sound from traveling through the air, creating a zone of absolute silence.

But despite the limited range of magic they could learn, their magic lessons were still tough, because, in addition to spell casting, they also had to learn rune magic.

Rune magic is a branch of array magic. Circles with a diameter exceeding one meter drawn on the ground are called array magic, while those drawn on objects with a diameter less than a meter are known as rune magic. Regardless of the type, both are driven by using special materials to draw patterns that gather, channel, and release magical energies. Generally speaking, most rune magic circles are circular, but some rune spells don't have a specific shape.

Furthermore, rune magic circles can be divided into passive and active types. Passive arrays are those triggered by non-magical actions, such as collision, touch, or combustion.

Passive arrays are mostly used for setting traps, while passive runes are often employed for enhancing weapons and equipment. For instance, drawing passive defense runes on armor could trigger them when struck by swords, reducing the damage from the blades.

Such enhancements can be extraordinary. In the Second Otherworld War, the armor of the main force, the Otherworld Royal Knights, could only be penetrated by machine gun fire at close range, which indirectly led to the disastrous defeat of Earth's multinational troops.

Active arrays, on the other hand, can only be triggered by the mage driving the magic. Generally, active arrays are mostly used for summoning spells, like the Otherworld Gate that connects two worlds was activated using array magic. Active runes are mostly employed in enhancing weapons or as active traps.

The reason rune magic is difficult to learn is that drawing rune magic circles requires absolute precision; any flaw could result in irreversible consequences. Therefore, even by the final year of high school, there were only a few students who could skillfully draw rune magic circles.

Luo'er watched the few people arguing not far away and suddenly had a bold idea.

"Teacher," Luo'er called out to Zhuyan Yu, who was floating in mid-air watching the commotion, and asked, "Do we have firearms available here?"

"Of course, do you want to use them?" Zhuyan Yu thought and remembered that the virtual machine was equipped with a weapons system, although it utilized the civilian VR game weapons system.

"Yes, could you give me a gun?"

"Let me look," Zhuyan Yu extended her finger and swiped in the air, making a weapons panel appear in front of her. She scrolled up and down, asking, "What type of gun do you want?"

"Any will do."

"Alright then." With a wave of her finger, an AK47 appeared out of thin air and then fell to the ground.

Luo'er picked up the rifle and examined it. It wasn't much different from a real-world AK47, except for somewhat more vibrant materials.

"Teacher, can an AK47 automatic rifle's close-range firing penetrate a first-level shield spell?" Luo'er asked, looking down at the gun without raising his head.

"In theory, it's possible," Zhuyan Yu thought and said. The main task of the Magic Research Center was to research the confrontation between Otherworld magic and Earth's weapons. Despite the lack of extensive actual combat data, they had reached some general conclusions with the supercomputer's simulations.

"What about second-level shield magic?"

"For second-level, it would be more difficult, or it might be said to be unlikely. Of course, that is only simulated data," Zhuyan Yu added after some thought.

"Which means, in real-world combat, a first-level shield spell would be sufficient to block close-range shots from most small caliber weapons."

"This..." Zhuyan Yu was stunned by Luo'er's conclusion momentarily.

"But, the values reflected in this virtual world are still just theoretical data, right?"

"Mm," Zhuyan Yu nodded subconsciously.

"So, in this space, an AK47 can still penetrate a first-level shield magic, right?"

"Yes...." Zhuyan Yu started to feel a bit confused.

"I understand, thank you, Teacher Zhu." Luo'er handed the gun back to Zhuyan Yu, bowed respectfully, then turned and walked toward Tangmo and the others.

"What does this kid want to do?" Zhuyan Yu casually tossed the gun aside, speaking with puzzled curiosity.

"Moumou." Luo'er approached Tangmo, who was scolding the two of them.

"What's the matter, Luo'er?" As soon as Tangmo saw Luo'er, a smile instantly returned to his face.

"Could you come over for a moment? I have something I'd like to ask you." Luo'er gestured with his hand.

"Mm...." Tangmo nodded happily and followed Luo'er, not forgetting to look back and scold one more time, "Both of you better reflect on your actions properly."

"This guy...." Hu Daoke, watching their retreating figures, couldn't help but start cursing, now finally realizing who his real enemy was.

"This half-elf is really something... Brother, it seems we've met by fighting. How about we team up to take him down?" Hu Daoke turned his head to speak to Cheng Ziang.

Cheng Ziang gave him a cold glance, maintaining his usual air of proud aloofness.

"Moumou, can you cast a Silence Magic?" Having reached a quieter spot, Luo'er asked her.

"Eh, of course." Tangmo was slightly taken aback, but then nodded in agreement. She raised her magic wand and began to chant softly.

In an instant, it seemed as though something had enveloped them, isolating the space from the world; they couldn't hear any sound, including each other's voices. The whole world became eerily quiet in a blink.

Luo'er nodded and motioned with his hand for her to break the spell. Tangmo stopped chanting, and the surrounding noise immediately returned to their ears.

"Moumou, can you draw an Active Explosion Magic Array on the ground?" Luo'er continued to inquire.

"Mm." Although she didn't understand what Luo'er was planning, Tangmo still subconsciously agreed.

Holding her magic wand, she crouched and began to draw the magic array on the ground. She was one of the few students who could precisely hand-draw rune magic circles, thus she always ranked at the top in magic theory exams.

Before long, she had completed an Explosion Magic Array on the ground. Luo'er looked at the array and asked, "Can you activate it?"

"Yes." Tangmo stood up, took a few steps back, and signaled for Luo'er to do the same. She pointed her magic wand at the magic array and chanted the spells.

"Boom!" The drawn array on the ground suddenly emitted a faint light, followed by a violent explosion; the marble flooring instantly shattered, creating a moderately sized crater.

Luo'er looked at the crater and nodded; he felt that his idea had been validated and was now ready to be implemented. He left Tangmo and turned to find Zhuyan Yu, asking, "Teacher, is the supercomputer available for use during normal times?"

"Eh, are you also planning to practice on your own time?" Zhuyan Yu was taken aback.

"Yes, we want to adapt to using magic as quickly as possible."

"Ah, that's fine if there's no class; however, since the supercomputer has just been put into use, it's frequently being adjusted, so if you need it, you can come and find me."

"Thank you, Teacher Zhu." Luo'er gave her a deep bow.

"You're too polite," Teacher Zhu replied, somewhat awkwardly facing Luo'er's thorough respectfulness.

"Furthermore, I have another favor to ask of Teacher Zhu."

"Mm, what is it?"

Luo'er whispered something in her ear.

"Is that all?" Zhuyan Yu was somewhat puzzled as to what Luo'er needed these preparations for.

"Yes, thank you for your help, Teacher Zhu!" Luo'er bowed slightly as he spoke.
