During their training, King Kai asked Raditz a question, "What do you plan to do after you finish training here? Are you going to help Goku fight the other Saiyans?" He asked as they ate lunch.
"I'm here to fulfill a promise. To her." Shay nodded, looking up from the meditation pose that she'd been assuming for the last week. Deciding that nothing there was worth her time, she closed her eyes again, ignoring them.
"Real talker there." King Kai observed.
"She gave me a second chance, when I didn't deserve it. I don't know about fighting those two, but I'm not going to waste that."
"By the way, can you guys tell me a little about the Saiyan race?" Goku asked. Unlike Raditz, he had been raised with absolutely no connection to his home world, after all. All he knew about Saiyans was what Raditz had told him before their respective deaths.
"I guess I should tell you a bit about your race's past, then. Raditz, some of this might be beyond your knowledge, too, so listen up."
"Now, a long time before you guys were born, there were two tribes that lived on planet Vegeta. Your ancestors were known as the Saiyans, and the other tribe was known as the Tuffles.
Now, the Tuffles were a so-called advanced civilization, They had cities much like the ones on Earth and enjoyed all of the modern conveniences such as air travel and mini-malls. They had long ago outgrow energy sources which polluted their planet and were enjoying health and prosperity.
Meanwhile, not far from the city, in the arid wastelands of Vegeta, the Saiyans lived in primitive fashion. They were much larger in size than the Tuffles, but much smaller in number. One thing all Saiyans had in common was that they all had tails. Another was their brutal and violent nature... they loved to fight.
But because they were so few in number, the Tuffles never worried about the Saiyan. That is, until the day they attacked."
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. The great war for Planet Vegeta. Innumerable lives lost, ending in a total victory for us Saiyans when the full moon happened for the first time in eight years." Raditz said, "I already know this part."
"Goku doesn't, so please don't interrupt me, Raditz."
"The Tuffles put up a good fight, before that night. They had technology on their side. They had what you now know as Scouters to measure their enemy's fighting power, and advanced weaponry which they used to hold the Saiyans at bay. But once that full moon came, the Saiyan's ability to transform into huge ape-like creatures by soaking up the moon's rays basically turned the war into a one-sided slaughter in favor of the Saiyans.
But then a new problem began for the Saiyans. Without the Tuffles' technology, the Saiyans couldn't travel in space. This meant that they couldn't satisfy the one desire that they all shared, the desire to fight.
I'm sure you've heard the joke, how many Saiyans does it take to build a rocket ship?"
"Very funny..." Raditz wasn't amused.
"It's a really good joke. Anyways, not far away from their home planet, the Saiyans met the Arcosians. Now, the Arcosians had money and technology, but their home planet of Arcos was a dump. So they hired the Saiyans to conquer a planet for them. An unholy partnership was formed.
With Saiyan might and Arcosian technology combined, they formed a fleet of planet pirates. Their plan meant that there was nothing they wouldn't do to achieve their goals.
An armada of space pods was designed to travel the vast distances of the universe. They even sent babies like yourself to distant planets, more than happy to send specimens of their race into the great unknown."
"Mainly weaklings who showed little to no potential for fighting, like you, Kakarot." Raditz interjected.
"Thanks, Raditz, but my low power level was still enough to kill you, remember?" Goku argued.
"Anyways, the Saiyan leaders knew that when the babies grew up, they would extinguish any and all inhabitants of the planet they landed on."
"Sounds like they deserved to be extinguished themselves." Goku said angrily. Raditz didn't argue.
"Well, all misdeeds gather their just rewards. You see, just like Earth, Planet Vegeta also had a guardian."
"A guardian that didn't actually do anything." Shay interjected.
"What?" King Kai asked her.
"The planet Vegeta's guardian wasn't the one to attract the meteor that destroyed it. He just didn't stop it." Shay told them. She couldn't tell Goku and Raditz about Frieza, yet, but her Mistress agreed that the fact that in the anime, Goku never learns about his father's efforts to save them, was wrong. So, Shay explained.
" A few days before the destruction of your planet, it was foreseen by your father, Bardock."
"What?" Raditz had never heard this before.
"He was the first one to realize it. He was on a mission. He had been sent to wipe out a city in the far corner of the galaxy, but the people living there had a special power. They could foresee their own deaths. When he killed them, they cursed him with a glimpse into his own future." She explained.
"He saw the planet being destroyed?" King Kai didn't know the actual truth of what had happened on Vegeta. He hadn't been watching at the time, and had only figured it out later. Hearing that Bardock knew was a surprise to him.
"He knew he couldn't stop it, so he sent Goku to Earth, in the hopes that he'd become... well, you, Goku. After that, he tried to warn his fellow Saiyans, but none of them would listen. He died protecting his planet, as a hero. He was even allowed to keep his body, alongside your mother, as a reward for his good deed, even despite the horrible things he did in the name of his job." Shay explained. This stunned everyone listening into silence. None of them had known anything about that now.
"Only four Saiyans survived the destruction of the planet, including you, Goku, thanks to your father's foresight." Shay finished.
"Sounds like he was a good man at the end."
"He tried." Shay said ambiguously. Bardock had been a complicated person. Calling him a good person wouldn't have been perfectly accurate.
"Kakarot, I've decided. I'll help you fight." Raditz decided, hearing Shay's story. Learning about his father's sacrifice had spurred a change in the Saiyan.
"Then let's get to work." King Kai told them.
