Gohan looked at the apples that the vendor was selling. He was hungry. After a moment, he wiped the drool from his lip, and began to play his part.
"AAGHH! AAGHH!" Gohan whined, clutching his stomach. Immediately, all the vendors in the immediate area left their carts to see what the big commotion was. Meanwhile, the other children made holes in boxes and stole as much food as they thought that they could carry. Naturally, this didn't go unnoticed for long.
"Hey! You rotten kids!" Every single vendor in the area started chasing the kids. Then the police got involved. The kids took off on a scooter, but the cops were in hot pursuit. Fortunately, on their way out of town, the cop chasing them nearly hit some girl, and ran smack dab into a food stand.
"I'll get you kids for this!" He shouted as the kids raced off, laughing.
"Who needs parents? Not us." One of the kids said cheerfully.
...
That night, Gohan couldn't sleep. Grabbing his sword, he left the run-down building that was serving as his shelter for the time being.
"Hey Gohan, what's up?" Pigero called to him, having been on watch in the tree house in case more social workers came.
"Hey, what are you doing up so late?" Gohan asked, honestly surprised. He hadn't expected to see anyone else out this late.
Pigero explained what he was doing. "I do night duty ever since Rom nodded off and fell out of the tree. So what's up with you?" He asked.
"You must have something on your mind if you're up this late."
Gohan decided to tell Pigero the truth. While he couldn't quite bring himself to admit to the others that he wasn't an orphan, Pigero was different. Gohan really respected the guy.
"Well, I'm not really an orphan. When I was shipwrecked, I was on my way home to see my mom. My sister might be there, too, but I'm not sure." He explained.
"Hmm. I see." Pigero trailed off, thinking.
"Oh. So you do have a home?" It turns out that all of the other kids had been awake, and they'd all heard Gohan's admission. Surprised, Gohan apologized.
"Sorry you guys. I just couldn't say it."
"Hey, don't worry about it, it's cool." Pigero interjected.
"Yeah, I really didn't give you the chance to tell us." Rom added.
"So where's your house?" Pigero asked.
"It's right by Mt. Paoz, In the forest."
"Hey, that's just a little ways inland from here."
"Wow, seriously?" Gohan was surprised. Since Piccolo had been the one to drop him off at that island, he could have landed literally anywhere. Who would've thought it'd be so close to his house?
"Hey, if you know where it is, could you show me?" He asked the teen.
"No problem, I'll take you over there tomorrow." Pigero agreed. Gohan thanked him.
The kids started asking him about his mom. From there, they started talking about the ups and downs of studying, and from there the conversation went to how people used to just live off the land. They started to talk about what they'd do if they could go back to that.
"Hey, what do you say we all drive to Gohan's house tomorrow to drop him off?" Pigero asked.
Everyone was up for it.
...
"No sign?"
"Nope."
"They're late today." Pigero muttered.
Just as he said that, one of the kids on lookout called out with a warning. The social workers were on their way.
"Places, everybody!" Pigero told the kids.
As soon as the social workers got there, the kids pelted them with rocks as Pigero got in their van. Once the van was ready to go, Pigero signaled all the children to get inside.
As the kids started piling in, though, something went wrong.
"Police! Scramble!" The police started pulling up, en masse.
Pretty soon, the children were surrounded. As hard as they fought, the battle was clearly a losing one. As they got the handcuffs on Pigero, Gohan finally unsheathed his sword and charged at the ones around Pigero.
"HAAA!" He shouted as he cleaved right through the handcuffs, scaring the living daylights out of the cop on the other end of the cuffs. Pigero took in his surroundings, realizing that this may not be a bad thing. The kids deserve a chance to have a real home. he realized. Sometimes, the rationing had been so bad that kids had gone without eating for a whole day. He couldn't provide for these children anymore.
"Come on, let's go!" He grabbed Gohan's wrist and started running, as the kids shouted "Come back, Pigero!" in vain. Despite their pleas, Pigero was stone faced as he pushed Gohan into a nearby car and started it.
"What about the others?"
"Never mind!" Pigero shouted. He managed to turn the car on and pump the gas just as the nearest social worker started to catch up to him, barely missing the club that the social worker had swung at the car.
Pigero flew down the highway with a confused Gohan in the backseat. Knowing how much Pigero cared about those children, Gohan just couldn't wrap his mind around the fact that he was willing to abandon them like that. They were at Mt. Paoz before another word was said.
"Hey Pigero! Why! Why did you leave them? You were their hero! Why?" Gohan frantically asked as Pigero dragged him out of the car. Angry, Pigero punched Gohan in the face.
"You don't understand! I didn't have a choice!" Gohan glared at Pigero as he continued, "I can't take care of them! They need more than I can give them!" You could see the pain of submission on Pigero's face. "Those kids need a real home." He told Gohan. Tears rolled down his cheeks. Gohan couldn't find anything to say. He didn't understand... he couldn't. He realized the difficulty of the choice that Pigero just made as the teen climbed into his car.
"Later! You're one bad dude, for real. Keep it up!"
"Where will you go?" Gohan asked.
"I don't know. There's a whole world out there! Take care of that mom of yours! And that sister, too! See ya!" Pigero called out as he took off down the road.
All Gohan could do is watch as the teen disappeared down the street, calling out, "Thank you, Pigero! I hope that we meet again someday!" Pigero's decision wasn't Gohan's to judge. Gohan reminded himself. Instead, he looked toward the forest.
"Home, here I come!" This terrain was familiar to Gohan. It would take him a little bit of a walk, but he knew the way to go to get home, and he was ecstatic about that. He raqced towards his home, full speed ahead. As the house came into view, Gohan could see his mother through the window. But he couldn't go in. He knew that his sister wasn't there. She was training, to beat the Saiyans. To protect the world that Pigero and the other kids lived in. Something inside Gohan knew that it wasn't quite time to go home yet.
Tears falling from his eyes, Gohan slowly backed away, which turned into an all-out sprint. When he finally stopped, there was a familiar figure in the sky above him.
"Gohan, what is your mission? Say it!" Piccolo shouted.
"To prepare for the Saiyans! To fight! And to beat them!"
"Then let's go back."
...
Pigero didn't have a destination, but he drove. Eventually he'd get to where he needed to go, even through his tears.
"So... Where are we going?" Hearing the voice beside him made Pigero jerk the wheel on impulse, almost causing him to crash into a tree. Slamming on the brakes, he managed to stop just in time.
"Who are... You look kind of like Gohan." Pigero realized.
"Gold star. I'm his sister, Hanna. How would you like to help protect the world, Pigero?"
