Confronted with Fudge's request, Scrimgeour offered a noncommittal nod. Despite harboring dissatisfaction with Fudge's numerous demands, Scrimgeour reluctantly aligned with Fudge on this particular issue.
The actions of the Alliance on this day vividly demonstrated their complete disregard for the British Ministry of Magic. Departing calmly in front of numerous Ministry of Magic Aurors felt like a deliberate insult to the Ministry, a slap in the face that was, ironically, handed over willingly.
Originally, Scrimgeour had planned to monitor the key members of the Alliance intensively following the Ministry of Magic's internal conflict.
His primary objective was to identify the elusive new leader of the Alliance and, at the opportune moment, launch a decisive strike against the Alliance.
His strategy aimed to apprehend the majority of Alliance key members in one sweeping operation. Such a coordinated effort would sow chaos among the Alliance members, leaving them vulnerable to further dismantlement.
Scrimgeour's proposed plan faced rejection from Minister Fudge, who was still haunted by the recent internal conflict within the Ministry and now held a simplistic perspective. Minister Fudge would treat them as inconsequential as long as the Alliance refrained from directly targeting the British Ministry of Magic.
In Minister Fudge's reasoning, no insurmountable hostility existed between the Alliance and the British Ministry of Magic, unlike the conflicts with adversaries such as the Magic Congress of the United States.
Therefore, Minister Fudge saw no justification for the British Ministry of Magic shouldering the entirety of the costs in a confrontation with the Alliance.
Minister Fudge's perspective found resonance within the British Ministry of Magic, providing him with stability in his position right now.
This contributed to Minister Fudge's reluctance to take any decisive action against the Alliance, a sentiment that left Scrimgeour disheartened.
All his life, there have been tons of times when Scrimgeour himself felt like he could single-handedly solve most of the cases if it were not for Minister Fudge interfering with him.
Reflecting on this situation, Scrimgeour couldn't help but sigh. Turning to the hastily arriving Minister Fudge, he inquired, "Mr. Minister, what do you believe prompted the Alliance to create such a commotion today?"
Confronted with Scrimgeour's inquiry, Fudge furrowed his brow impatiently and retorted, "How should I know? The Alliance is a bunch of lunatics!"
Upon hearing Minister Fudge's response, Scrimgeour offered a wry smile and commented, "I genuinely wish the Alliance were a bunch of lunatics, but unfortunately, they are not. In fact, they are quite intelligent... and very cunning."
Just then, an Auror from the Ministry of Magic hurried over and approached Fudge and Scrimgeour. Speaking softly, the Auror said, "Minister, Head, I think you better come and see this."
The Auror wore an expression of indescribable strangeness, as if he had witnessed something beyond his comprehension.
Observing this, Scrimgeour and Minister Fudge exchanged glances and quickly followed the Auror to a nearby alley.
As they arrived at an alley not far from the Zonko's Joke Shop, Scrimgeour and Minister Fudge were surprised to discover several wizards lying on the ground.
Some of the wizards in the alley had their eyes tightly closed, rendering them unconscious, while others had their eyes open, exhibiting a vacant gaze that seemed oblivious to their surroundings.
Adding to the peculiarity, each of them bore a sign suspended around their necks.
These signs not only identified the individuals but also detailed some of the deeds the wizards had committed.
For instance, the wizard nearest to Scrimgeour and Fudge had wide-open eyes, yet he stared blankly ahead. A crystalline drop slowly trickled from the corner of his mouth, and his sign revealed:
"Thiago Costa, who used the Imperius Curse on a Muggle in 1989, then escaped while being escorted to Azkaban by the Ministry of Magic."
Upon reading the content on the wizard's sign, Scrimgeour and Fudge exchanged glances, their expressions reflecting a shared sense of bewilderment.
Subsequently, Scrimgeour scrutinized several more individuals, finding that each one carried a similar sign detailing their respective transgressions.
Their heads were a mess when they could only see one wizard after another lying unconscious with their crimes written.
Who would do these kinds of crimes that help the Auror in doing their job? A sudden appearance of Vigilantes in the wizarding world?
Though Minister Fudge was lost and slow to catch on, Scrimgeour already had his mind fixated on who was responsible for all this.
In essence, the wizards currently lying in the alley were designated, according to the inscriptions on their chests, as potential cellmates bound for Azkaban.
As Scrimgeour and Fudge puzzled over this unusual situation, another Auror approached, presenting an envelope to Fudge and saying, "Mr. Minister, I found this at the entrance of the alley just now."
Minister Fudge was about to open the letter, but Scrimgeour intervened.
Casting a suspicious glance at Scrimgeour, Fudge hesitated. Calmly, Scrimgeour cautioned, "Mr. Minister, exercise caution; it could be dangerous."
Drawing his wand, Scrimgeour took the letter from Minister Fudge and aimed his wand at it.
Uttering an incantation, he declared, "Aparecium! Finite Incantatem!"
…
After attempting several consecutive spells, Scrimgeour calmly reported, "It's all right, Mr. Minister."
However, as he prepared to return the letter to him, Minister Fudge gestured for him to hold on, saying, "Come and see, Rufus."
Unfazed by Minister Fudge's request, Scrimgeour opened the letter with composure, revealing its succinct contents:
"Don't bother yourself. We will come for you!
Lying on the ground is a gift from us. Consider this as our present before we meet!
No need to credit us for it, you are welcome!"
These few lines left Scrimgeour with a profound sense of humiliation.
Despite always viewing the Alliance as his primary adversary since taking office, it became abundantly clear that, in the eyes of the Alliance, he was not considered an opponent at all.
As Scrimgeour scrutinized the message in his hand, his fury intensified.
At that moment, Fudge's enraged voice resonated beside him, exclaiming, "These bastards! It's so outrageous!"
The sudden outburst from Minister Fudge startled Scrimgeour, and a surge of excitement welled up within him. He silently hoped, "Has Minister Fudge finally reached his limit? This is great! Order swiftly, Minister; we've pinpointed the whereabouts of numerous key members of the Alliance. With your command, we can apprehend them immediately! Give the order now, Minister."
Yet, Minister Fudge did not align with Scrimgeour's hopes.
Minister Fudge, still seething with anger, continued, "How dare they claim these as a gift from them? These dark wizards are evidently adversaries our Ministry of Magic has tirelessly faced, battling through untold hardships to wear them down. It is all the credit of our British Ministry of Magic! If not, it's them who were stealing credits from us!"
Hearing Minister Fudge's perspective, Scrimgeour couldn't help but sigh inwardly, recognizing the futility of expecting any decisive action from Minister Fudge.
"This is going to be a long day…" Scrimgeour mumbled.
"You said anything, Rufus?" Minister Fudge asked after turning his gaze from the letter.
