Kapitel 45: Chapter 5: Previous Victim

Bai Lian stealthily crossed the street, deftly alighting on the window frame of a teahouse compartment, her presence evading notice. Adjacent, the jade rabbit crouched by the window, its ears pinned on either side, revealing only its eyes, which meticulously scanned the bustling street outside.

Bai Lian inquired, "Have you identified anyone suspicious?"

The jade rabbit's ears perked up instantly, swaying like a human hand's gesture—left and right.

No.

"Then leave this place," Bai Lian decided. She wasn't convinced that the seemingly safe location was truly secure. She planned to rent a room at a distant inn. Fortunately, this season wasn't a peak time for relic exploration, so vacant rooms weren't a concern.

She had no intention of venturing into the wilderness—demon beasts could be lurking in the sands, and open landscapes weren't conducive to concealment. The city, bustling with cultivators, offered a prime opportunity for Bai Lian to employ a disguise and escape detection.

Bai Lian noticed a hurried group passing by—a cultivator in the early stage of the Golden Core realm leading them. It wasn't uncommon for such groups to embark on nefarious ventures in the Sand Region. Bai Lian paid it no mind.

Soon, Bai Lian, accompanied by Su Youwei and the jade rabbit, reached the entrance of an inn.

A series of system tasks promptly appeared:

[Task 1: Enter with Su Youwei (Reward: Spirit Herb - Ice Jade Vine)]

[Task 2: Enter alone (Reward: Cooking +1)]

Bai Lian's spirits lifted. She found satisfaction in the simplicity of these tasks. She opted not to bring Su Youwei inside. Being a daughter of the Su family, the innkeeper was likely to recognize her. The task reward indicated that the moment Su Youwei appeared, the innkeeper would alert either the Su family or the Red Moon Sect.

"Wait outside," Bai Lian instructed, before stepping into the inn.

Su Youwei, though puzzled, complied with Bai Lian's directive. She didn't understand the rationale behind their inn visit—did Bai Lian merely desire a comfortable bed? Regardless, she couldn't find any comfort here. Never!

All she wished for was Bai Lian to rescue her adoptive father and aunt swiftly.

Moments later, Bai Lian emerged from the inn's window, and the trio was ushered inside. The transition was executed surreptitiously, without attracting any attention.

Inside the room, Su Youwei was taken aback. At its center sat a large wooden barrel, emitting a gentle steam. A bath? Su Youwei grasped Bai Lian's intentions. She was to bathe before they continued their journey. Suddenly, it all made sense.

Su Youwei marveled at Bai Lian's thoughtfulness. She had even prepared fresh clothing. How thorough this demon was!

Suppressing her initial hesitations, Su Youwei disrobed swiftly, her trembling form eased as she sank into the warm water.

"Bathing will help you relax," Bai Lian suggested, pointing to the new set of clothes adjacent to the barrel. "You should change after washing. Your current attire is too conspicuous."

Such meticulousness was beyond her expectations. Bai Lian was truly living up to her reputation as a renowned Martial Sister of the Qiongming Peak. It appeared her attentiveness extended even to such seemingly mundane matters.

With Bai Lian's guidance, Su Youwei disrobed and stepped gingerly into the barrel's soothing embrace. Its rim concealed her form perfectly, rendering her entirely unseen unless someone stood beside the barrel.

The gentle sound of water echoed through the still night.

Meanwhile, Bai Lian weighed her options.

Her magic could easily cleanse Su Youwei, but she contemplated whether leaving it to the bath might trigger new tasks from the system, allowing her to accumulate additional skill points.

True to her hypothesis, the moment Su Youwei prepared to disrobe, her Hard Skill increased by 1 point.

"Too easy!"

Yet, before Bai Lian could revel in her small victory, her jade slip chimed with a new message:

Xiao Jinse, [Elder Martial Sister, have you seen the third younger Martial Sister? Is she beautiful?]

Bai Lian's lips curved into a wry smile. Well, she was indeed attractive. However, something about those cold eyes left her inexplicably perturbed—was it the chill of the desert night?

Her response was measured: [I arrived in Gray Wind Town today and haven't yet encountered the third Martial Sister. I suspect her beauty may not match yours.]

A prolonged silence ensued before Xiao Jinse finally replied:

Xiao Jinse, [I'm not as alluring as you claim! The Qiongming Peak is sure to buzz with excitement upon the third Martial Sister's arrival.]

Hopeful words, indeed.

Bai Lian felt a sense of unease, swiftly shifting the conversation to her experiences in Gray Wind Town. It wasn't long before their exchange concluded, leaving Bai Lian to contemplate her endeavors.

Su Youwei, meanwhile, emerged from the bath and donned the "Green Lotus Clothes," an inferior magic tool provided by Bai Lian.

Evidently, Bai Lian had her own intentions for this arrangement.

In her new attire, Su Youwei's confusion deepened.

The revealing attire she expected had been replaced by an outfit of modest proportions, seemingly conservative by comparison. Bai Lian's thoughts remained an enigma.

Bai Lian suddenly moved, prompting Su Youwei's attention. Was it time? A frigid hand brushed her head, and she involuntarily recoiled.

"Careful…"

Su Youwei uttered, her voice quivering.

Bai Lian reassured her, "I'll be gentle, don't worry. I'll ensure you're comfortable. After all, I wouldn't want any complications later."

Su Youwei sighed in relief and opened her arms, readying herself. However, Bai Lian's expected touch never came.

Confused, she cautiously opened her eyes, only to find Bai Lian staring at her with a peculiar expression.

"Is something amiss with your stomach?"

Su Youwei shook her head, dispelling any discomfort.

Bai Lian continued, "I'm no medic. I was concerned about worsening the situation. Since you're alright, rest here. I'll fetch your relatives."

Perplexed, Su Youwei was at a loss. Was Bai Lian dismissing her?

Noticing Su Youwei's uncertainty, Bai Lian answered her unspoken question.

"I was communicating with my second Martial Sister—your second Elder Martial Sister."

Could this woman have been a previous victim as well?

Su Youwei contemplated this thought as Bai Lian departed.
