I took the stairs two at a time and found my way into a guest bedroom I had never seen before. I wanted it to take a minute for him to find me because I knew he would and I didn’t have a clue what would fall out of my mouth.

Questions filled my thoughts and filled my brain with radio static as I tried to go through them simultaneously. How easily did he walk away from his first mate? Had he consummated their bond as we had? Had he bitten her?

Each question only hurt my feelings more. I was just thinking I mattered. I was feeling I was where I always should have been but I was just taking someone else’s place. A role I thought was supposed to be irreplaceable.

‘but who said I was replacing anything? I’m that item you use as a quick fix until something better comes along.’
