Chapter Seventeen: Seeds of Salvation

A high-pitched scream filled my ears. I barely realized it came from me.
Shots continued to fire off around us, but I couldn’t move. I just lay there frozen for a moment in my pure panic, but only a moment.
Fate grunted in pain as he scooted over to where I lay.
“Are you ok, Moonbeam?” he asked so softly like we weren’t in a gunfight.
I just stared at him in disbelief. I spent most of my life in this way in some form or another. I wasn’t even an afterthought. I was an ‘Oh right, Lavender exists’ reminder. Yet there this man lay worried about me with a bullet wound in his shoulder.
“I need you to tell me. Are you hurt?” he pressed, and I shook my head.
The motion shook out the shock that tried to remain.
“You need to put pressure on the wound,” I said with the confidence of someone who religiously binge-watched medical dramas.
