We headed toward the sound of fighting. My hand wrapped tightly around Demi’s collar. I held her straight in front of me as she stumbled on the cobblestone beneath our feet.

“You should have kept to your side of the bargain,” I said as the sound of struggle became louder.

Demi let out a small bitter laugh, “You say that as if what we promised would work. There will never be a true truce. I didn’t expect you to hold up your end either.”

I pushed her along the path, confused and frustrated.

“Why give her over at all? Why keep her when you obviously hate our kind,” Cerberus questioned, taking the words from my mouth.

“Do you know why shifter women go into heat in their thirties?” Demi asked, changing the topic.

I knew why. All shifter kind does. At least those in a pack. I learned in my studies. They went into heat to preserve our species.
