The discovery of Melange or Spice leads to different groups wanting to hold control over it. Since Spice is a drug gives the user a longer life span, greater vitality, and heightened awareness. It was wanted by everyone, but because of presence of Sandworm only very small amount cane be retrieved.
During this time a Warlord named Memnon wanting to gain sole control of Spice starts a plan to invade and control certain key cities around the red waste and slowly recover Spice from Red Waste. He also wants to conquer all of Essos too.
He believes in prophecy of The stallion who mounts the world. Thus him capturing Cassandra( Same from Scorpion King), who is from a tribe of seers that gained there power through Melange or Spice.
