It took a while to fully calm down Haku, who ended up crying himself to sleep, but his hand remained tightly gripping the fabric of my pants, refusing to let go. Perhaps he thought I would leave while he slept?
"I didn't even introduce myself, how rude of me. My name is Enel."
(You know, it feels strange to use 'Enel' even though it's the original version, because I grew up watching the series with 'Eneru' as the character's name.)
"Mr. Enel..."
"Well then, do you happen to know where the nearest village is?"
Haku shook his head.
Really? It seems like his mother never took him far from their home. I understand his fear and reason for staying close, but come on!
"Alright, wait a moment and keep quiet, okay?"
I had no choice but to try using Mantra for the first time; otherwise, we might wander aimlessly for hours, and after a sleepless night, I was feeling a bit impatient.
Note aside, the physics in One Piece are quite ridiculous. Anyone in my situation would be falling asleep, but my condition is still pretty good, and it only slightly affected my mood. Let's get some meat to eat; I'm in the mood for some barbecue after staring at snow all night.
Now, how do I use this?
Enel used Mantra in combination with his Devil Fruit ability, so let's try that...
Oh, it works. I can sense some kind of response, like a radar. It's quite vague since I'm not used to it, but I think it will work if we head towards where there are more signals, which should be a village or a pack of wolves.
"Let's go," I grabbed Haku's shirt collar, like picking up a kitten by its neck, and hoisted him onto my shoulders. Even though I know he has extra cold resistance due to his bloodline, I still don't like the idea of him walking the whole way to the village barefoot like me. Stepping on something sharp would be problematic.
"Wow~ I'm so high up!"
Haku used one arm to hold onto my forehead and the other to shield his eyes. I think that's a good idea; I read something about too much light reflected by the snow can damage your eyes, so some villages in snowy areas use a type of glasses with slits.
...Fifteen minutes later...
Well, logically, no matter how isolated Haku's mother wanted to be, it was to be expected that they weren't too far from the village to get supplies or where her husband was working.
People are looking at me like I'm a circus act, but if I don't get used to it, it will affect my mood every time I go out.
It seems my appearance is a bit intimidating, but at the same time, they don't see me as a threat because Haku is laughing on my shoulders.
It wasn't difficult to make some trades when they tasted my apples, although the woman running the local fruit stand has been giving me dirty looks.
I got shoes and a couple of sets of new clothes suitable for Haku in dark blue, a couple of backpacks to carry our things (I don't have the legendary Inventory, after all, and my pants don't have pockets!). I got familiar with the prices while acquiring some ryo (the currency of this world) and bought some essential items.
Like toilet paper, toothbrushes, and soap.
Being in a different world is no excuse to neglect personal hygiene.
Meat is priced through the roof, and my apple barter has limited effectiveness after visiting so many places. So, in the end, I had to settle for grilled fish, which is much more affordable, considering that a significant part of this country's diet comes from fishing.
Plus, the seas here aren't as polluted as in my previous world, and the fish taste quite good.
I ate five fish without even realizing it! And for dessert, an apple.
Also, it seems the man running the butcher shop is the husband of the woman from the fruit stand, and I'm sure that if I bought meat after the way she has been looking at me, she would sell me nearly spoiled meat.
Call it a hunch.
Taking advantage of the few ryo I have left, I paid for a room in a decent inn I found, although I had to duck to enter. I say decent because it has four walls and a roof along with heating, which is much better than what we used the night before.
Tomorrow, I'll have my Sky Island, so it's foolish to pay more than necessary.
