It was ridiculous how giddy that little gesture made me feel. I just about dissolved into the thick carpet.

Face suddenly set, David placed his drink down on one of the passing trays, then excused himself to his companions and started towards me.

He shouldn't. I knew he shouldn't. He knew he shouldn't. But the fact that he was coming anyway only made me tumble one step deeper down the well with him, and that was terrifying.
