There was nothing we were required to attend that afternoon, since David was spending all his time having private meetings with other women—a fact I tried to ignore as much as possible. So in an effort to get Emory aside without drawing attention to it, and because I needed something to focus on, I agreed to play cards with her and Lizbeth, the timid blonde woman who'd been upset about the sorcery claims.
Even though Lizbeth seemed very twitching and insecure, she was also very sweet. And once she got past her fear of Emory, the three of us had a pleasant hour playing something called "Swim the Creek" in which we had to collect sets of cards and beat each other's totals.
