Princess Calia's sensuous lips formed a perfect 'O'.
Although she wholly trusted Duke, she imagined that being under his protection outside the palace was the utmost bliss. Who would have thought there could be a happiness beyond that?
Duke had actually fulfilled her wish, without any reservations!
The first girl, dressed as a maid, stepped forward, giving Calia a very standard handmaiden's bow.
She had a neat side-parted jet-black short hair, a pretty face with a hint of youthful naiveté. Although she wore the typical black and white maid's attire, her steps were firm, nothing like a typical maid's.
"Princess Calia, I am Vanessa VanCleef. I was originally Lord Marcus' exclusive maid. Now, my cruel master thinks I'm a nuisance and has discarded me. I beseech you, Princess, to take me in."
Duke held his forehead, "This maid is really a handful."
Calia was flabbergasted. Discarded a maid? What was that?
Duke chuckled, "Don't listen to Vanessa's nonsense. Her father, one of my trusted advisors, entrusted her to me. However, I found she had an innate rogue talent. Keeping her as a maid would waste her potential. It's better she ventures out. In a few years, with more experience and maturity, she'll be of great use to me."
"Hmph! That's more like it," Vanessa snorted, then, ignoring Duke, grabbed Princess Calia's hand, "Calia, I heard you wish to renounce your princess status and travel this continent as a commoner, is that true?"
"Absolutely!" Calia replied without hesitation.
"Then, to avoid revealing your identity, I'll address you by a pseudonym," the cunning Vanessa added.
"No problem." Calia, unaware of Vanessa's little scheme, was just happy with the friendly gesture. Constantly hearing the distant 'Your Highness' made her uncomfortable.
Duke continued, "This ranger is Lirath Windrunner, the youngest of the Windrunner sisters. Don't be fooled by her appearance; she's over three hundred years old. She has the unparalleled Windrunner talent. But she hasn't reached the hero domain yet, overshadowed by her three older sisters during the Dark Portal war. In fact, her kill count ranks in the top twenty of the Alliance."
Calia was more amazed.
Being in the top twenty was significant, especially considering who the top ten were.
Duke, the recognized bane of the orcs, ranked first.
Then came the Windrunner sisters and Antonidas active in the Silverpine Forest battleground.
The rest were renowned warriors like Anduin Lothar with his legendary weapon Quel'Zaram, followed by Uther and his revered Silver Hand Knights.
Others included Mograine, Abbendis, Daelin Proudmoore, Danath Trollbane, Kurdran Wildhammer, and the famed Bronzebeard brothers from Ironforge.
Without the aforementioned dominating the scene, Lirath would have easily been considered a hero of the Alliance. Nonetheless, she quietly secured her place in the top twenty.
Calia, the proud princess of Lordaeron, dashed over like a fan, bombarding Lirath with questions.
Once her excitement subsided, she noticed the third companion.
Both she and Duke overlooked Calia's earlier frenzy.
Duke explained, "This is Lady Liadrin. Like you, she was a priestess devoted to the Light. However, after the recent war, she had a change of heart and chose to follow my subordinate, Gavinrad the Dire, and converted to a paladin. She's an excellent vanguard and will accompany you on your adventures."
Calia's eyes sparkled once more, and her genuine demeanor endeared her to Liadrin.
Duke sighed inwardly.
All three companions he painstakingly arranged for her had significant backgrounds.
In the original history, Vanessa would become a formidable boss. Lirath, based on the original Lirath Windrunner, would meet her end, but now she had made a name for herself. And lastly, Liadrin, was an impressive figure.
Only Duke knew…
By the ancestors, he had charmed the future Blood Elf Blood Knight leader to join them!
Thanks to that powerful world deviation.
Finally, he gifted Calia a magical mask to disguise her stunning features and Liadrin a magical locator and communication device. All was set.
"Alright, I suggest you start your journey in Stranglethorn Vale. If you encounter any danger, summon me."
With Calia's matter resolved, Duke's focus shifted back to the North.
