Kapitel 5: Different ideals: different goals

Deserted Plains:

A shockwave blitzed through the air.

“HALT!” The knight shouted. His armor, dazzling like a star.

Behind him, two hundred thousand soldiers stopped, all at once, shaking the very barren lands in the process. Men, elves, demi-humans, ogres, dwarves, pixies, there were many.

These were barren lands. Nothing was in sight, not a tree, not even grass. And definitely not civilization.

Perfect for battle.

Perfect for war.

But something was in the sky.

“What was that?”

In front of the army and just behind the knight, there were four other people. Two of them were wearing knightly armor just like the leading man, while the other two were dressed in a not-so-knightly manner. One was actually just in her underwear- on a second glance, it was something fancy called underwear chainmail- looking bored. While the other, in a tracksuit.

“I don’t know,” The knight said, looking up. “But it’s not good, that’s for sure.”

“Are those birds?” One of the four said. “Oh wait, those are bones.”

“All men, prepare for battle!” The knight yelled. His voice wasn’t that loud, but his words spread throughout the battlefield- magic. “Today we shall vanquish the evil!” His voice was oddly deep and manly. It was produced through his magic.

His real voice was that of a teenager.

After all, in reality he ‘was’ a teenager.

“Isn’t he taking this ‘play the hero’ role too seriously?” The woman in the chainmail yawned. “Come on Jay.” She rolled her eyes.

“Well,” The boy in light armor tilted his head. “What’s wrong being a hero?”

The rest of the three just smiled.

Perhaps.

“Maybe we shouldn’t do this. I mean the great sage did say it was best to not attack today…” One of them, a rather young girl, fidgeted. Though it was awfully dirty in these parts, her tracksuit didn’t have a single stain.

But the knight- Jay just smiled. “A hero never runs away.” He raised his sword up, and his broadsword glowed in a fiery yellow light, condensing it and then firing it upward. “Beam cannon,” he almost sang the words.

A beam went up to the sky, obliterated hundreds of dead dragons, and bones started to fall.

Two of the four just shrugged while the rest grinned.

The knight looked back. “ALL MEN, ATTACK!”

Roars went across the battlefield and a battle of might and magic began.

“They’re coming my lord!” The demon general delivered, using his magic vison.

Even without the vision they could hear the army coming.

“It would seem that way,” the king paused. “The dragons would buy us time, it’s time to move out.” He closed his eyes. He’d done enough for his people. He’d even went as far as to sacrifice his own daughter and countless others for the revival of that monster. He’d sacrificed most of his sons for this war. For his people. But now, one last thing remained. “DEMONS! MY BRETHREN! TODAY, WE FIGHT! TODAY WE DIE! BUT WE WILL BE VICTORIOUS! WE WILL LIVE! WE WILL TRIUMPH! AND FOR THAT DAY, WE FIGHT, WE FIGHT. TO DEATH, TO DESPAIR. ONWAAAARD!!!” His voice roared across the battlefield.

ROAR!

His men roared back. They only numbered at a measly twenty-two thousand four hundred and eight, but every single demon was prepared to lay down their lives for their friends and family. They were at the borders of the demon lands. If they failed here, their family would be next.

Demons, they came in all shapes and sizes. Some had tails. Others wings or horns. Most were humanoid in form and shared caramel skin color. Some were red, while others perhaps whiter than milk.

But they all had one thing in common: the will to protect.

They were soldiers.

They were murderers.

But their family?

Weren’t they innocent?

And wasn’t it their job to protect those innocents?

So- they marched.

They knew they’d die.

But they knew that death wouldn’t be in vain.

As long as they could stall this massive army for one day, as long as they could achieve that, the barrier would be complete and the reinforcements- the serpents would be here.

‘But will we really last that long?’ The king’s heart shook but he still charged on his shadow drake- the large lizard- regardless: his troops followed just behind him.

Above his head was a massive army of zombie dragons but to the united force, even that army was nothing.

Boom!

A massive explosion resulted in the sky as a beam of light pierced through the heavens.

“That must be Jay, my lord. The leader of the seven heroes!” The general- prince Barden was just behind the king.

The king was already out of breath. He was too old for the battlefield. But- but he had to do this. “Then we must aim for his head. If we succeed in finishing their leader, their commanding chain would crumble and it would result in a stagger. We have to buy all the time we can!”

“The same is true for you.” The prince took a deep breath. “I’ll take out that man, father. HAH!” he forced his shadow drake to go faster and he took the lead.

Half of the army separated and marched along with the prince.

The king smiled. His son had grown up.

But he was also pained. After all, just how many sons did he have to lose?

‘That’s why, this time…’

They were already in range. Fireballs, ice lances, and even thunderbolts were already descending and hitting; in range.

But they couldn’t stop.

They had to go on.

He had his mace with him. The mace had seen countless battles alongside him, his trusted weapon.

He raised it over his head and pointed at the sky. Light disappeared and a ball of darkness formed. It slowly but surely got bigger and then- “Shadow flare!” The blistering darkness blitzed past the prince, straight at the front row of the united army- at the heroes.

Boom!

Another explosion.

The soldiers in the front line instantly vaporized.

But the heroes were unharmed. One of them had set up a makeshift barrier.

‘Damn it!’

“All men, aim for the he-” He paused. No, he couldn’t speak.

For in front of him, a hero had appeared.

His drake slammed into an invisible wall and the king rolled on the floor, getting up immediately.

“Father!”

“Go! Lead the army!”

The prince bit his lips, blood trickled but he glared ahead. He had a different objective.

“So, you’re the leader?” A young man, was here. He was alone. He was a hero.

“And you are?”

Ears ringing, the King stumbled up. breathless, bleeding a bit from his nose-

“Duran. One of the seven.” He bowed in a courtly manner. “And I’ll be taking your head.” He winked.

The king grinned and picked up his mace. “Over my dead body.”

Pant!

Pant!

He was too old for this-

“That was the plan.” Duran smiled.

He was in light armor but-

In a blink- he was before the king. ‘Fast.’

Wham!

Duran had slammed his fist on the king’s chest.

The king couldn’t even put up a guard.

He threw up blood and again rolled on the floor, getting up the very next second.

Pant!

“My king!”

More and more soldiers showed up, tried to shield the king with their bodies but-

“Weaklings should just die.” Duran grinned and fired earthen bullets threw just his fingertips.

Just one bullet was enough.

The soldiers were no more.

Hundreds gone, in a matter of a second.

“No incantation?” The king was out of breath. “Fire-” he raised his mace.

“You still don’t get it?” Duran closed in an instant, again. He knocked the old king on the ground, put his foot on his chest. “You’re no match for me. And as promised,” he winked and swung his sword. “I’ll be taking your head.”
