Chapter 64: End of the trip

"Aunty!" Called Edward.

The Headmistress ignored her nephew and observed the situation.

"What happened to you all?" Professor Olivia asked with worry after seeing their state.

"Hmm, it looks like some serious battle took place here. The smell of blood is strong in this area ." Professor Garret pointed out.

"Were you attacked? where are the attackers?" Asked the Headmistress.

"We were attacked by assassins!" Exclaimed Edward. "But it's okay, we managed to beat them."

The Headmistress gave Garret a look and this one nodded before rushing into the forest.

Professor Olivia went to check on Iria, who was still unconscious.

"Miss Monet seems fine, just unconscious."

Iris noticed the Headmistress Arabella looking at her leg.

"It's nothing serious, I have already applied some healing ointment," Iris responded.

The Headmistress then looked at Siegfried who was barely holding up. She approached him and held out a blue healing potion.

"Here, Mister Lancaster, drink this" She offered.

Siegfried noded and took the potion. His wounds closed up quickly as they were very clean cuts but his exhaustion did not disappear. He had the feeling that he was going to take a very long nap after this.

Soon enough, Professor Garret came back into the clearing, He was carrying the corpses of the female assassin that Iris battled and the mute assassin that Edward slew.

"You may want to check this tattoo, Headmistress." Garret uncovered the shoulder of the mute assassin by ripping his clothes.

On his shoulder was the symbol of a black hand with its five fingers extended and an eye in the middle of the palm.

"The Dark Hand…a second-rate assassin organization." Arabella looked at the old assassin, who was still resting in one corner of the clearing, where Siegfried left him.

"That one was also a member, yes?" She looked at Siegfried and he nodded.

"That was their leader," Siegfried told her.

"And who was the target? Im sure those idiots ended up telling you everything." Asked Garret.

Before Siegfried could answer, the Headmistress intervened.

"We can talk about the details at a better time and place. Mister Garret, I would ask you to take the corpses of those three back to our transportation, and make sure that you are not seen by any other students."

She then looked at Olivia.

"Professor Sinclair. Inform the students that this survival exercise is over. We cannot risk the safety of the children any further. I will personally escort those four out of the forest."

Olivia looked at the charred remains of Ashwood as well as the burned forest and looked like she wanted to ask more things of the students but knew better than contradict the Headmistress.

"Yes, Miss." She bowed lightly. She then conjured a platform made of earth and used it to fly away.

Arabella rose a finger and one of her rings illuminated with a green light. A wave of wind appeared beneath the four students and they were lifted into the air.

"Ahh, Aunty!, give us a warning!" Edward shouted.

'This is the wind magic of a rank 4 Magus…what an amazing control.' Even in his current state, Siegfried could appreciate the finesse of the Headmistress's magic.

"Let's get you kids outside this forest." She said as they all floated into the air and flew away.

As they flew away, they were able to follow the path of destruction that Siegfried's last move had left behind. The burned area went from the clearing, all the way to the entrance of the Varian Forest.

"Wow, Sieg. How the heck did you manage that? That had to be like a rank 3 magic at least!" Edward looked impressed but did not question Siegfried further.

Iria just started at Siegfried with a complicated expression. She was of course glad that they had survived the ordeal and Siegfried was able to defeat the assassin from the Ashwood family. But on the other was, she could not help to feel a bit jealous that Siegfried was able to perform the feat with her own sword. A feat that she could not even dream to accomplish.

The Headmistress Arabella just gave Siegfried a mysterious smile but said nothing. She just carried them until they reached the Mana Spinner. The cubic vehicle that had carried them here.

She took the three of them to the entrance and then went inside while carrying Iria.

"I will secure her inside. Wait here, we still have to inform the rest of the students about our abrupt end of the exercise."

She was about to enter but she stoped and looked at them.

"Oh…I almost forgot. In order to avoid more unnecessary questions. I will inform the students that you four were attacked by bandits instead of assassins. I would ask you to play along, yes?."

The three of them nodded. This was an understandable decision. After all, if the Headmistress were to reveal that Siegfried and the others were attacked by hired assassins, the first two things people will want to know were, who was the target and who hired them.

"Well play along, don't you worry, Auintie!" Edward gave her a thumbs up and she sighed.

Professor Garret was the next person to appear. He seemed to be carrying all three dead assassins with no effort.

"I will hide these three in the pilot cabin. You guys better not mention anything about this event. Let the Headmistress handle it. She is a smart lass that one!."

He was about to go inside when he stopped.

"Oh…I almost forgot. Do not mention to her that I called her lass, yes?" The bald professor requested with a hint of fear in his voice.

The three students just nodded, not wanting to get involved in a fight between the Headmistress and the combat professor.

They had to wait almost an hour before the other students started to leave the forest, escorted by Professor Olivia.

"What is going on?" A confused student asked.

"Yeah, why are we ending the trip a day early?!. I haven't gotten enough tainted cores yet" Another complained.

Charles Artois came out of the forest with a pleasant smile, already imagining what must have happened. But that smile immediately disappeared from his face the moment he saw Siegfried standing next to the vehicle, looking very tired but alive.

"Impossible!" He said a lot louder than he intended.
