Kapitel 6: Preparation before School Starts

Mr. Ollivander was paid eight Galleons by Jon, who then took the wand and left in a hurry.

Although he had wasted over an hour at Ollivander's wand shop, Jon was still very satisfied with the wand he obtained. Made of bamboo, it felt comfortable in his hand, and it was more flexible and sturdy than ordinary wood, making it usable as a melee weapon in emergency situations.

Next, he found Eric at Madame Malkin's robe shop... Eric had already bought most of the items on his list for him.

Jon carried a large bundle of clothes, including three sets of plain work robes (black), a plain daytime pointed hat (black), a pair of protective gloves (made of dragonhide or similar material), and a winter cloak. He also bought a large cauldron (tin-lined, standard size 2), a set of crystal vials, a telescope, and a brass scale.

The only thing left to buy was textbooks.

Jon opened the list:

"Standard Spells, Beginner" by Miranda Goshawk

"A History of Magic" by Bathilda Bagshot

"Magical Theory" by Adalbert Waffling

"Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration" by Emeric Switch

"A Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi" by Phyllida Spore

"Magical Draughts and Potions" by Arsenius Jigger

"Breaking with Banshees" by Gilderoy Lockhart

"Gadding with Ghouls" by Gilderoy Lockhart

"Holidays with Hags" by Gilderoy Lockhart

"Travels with Trolls" by Gilderoy Lockhart

"Voyages with Vampires" by Gilderoy Lockhart

"Wanderings with Werewolves" by Gilderoy Lockhart

"Year with the Yeti" by Gilderoy Lockhart

A total of 13 textbooks, and Jon felt a bit overwhelmed... especially with Lockhart's pile of "works" at the end, each of which was extremely expensive, adding up to a total of twenty Galleons.

But there was no choice, Jon gritted his teeth and couldn't possibly go to school without textbooks... so he added this pile of books to his shopping basket.

He also bought three extra books for extracurricular reading: "Defensive Dark Arts and Self-Protection" by Quentin Trimble, "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" by Newt Scamander, and "Advanced Potion-Making" by Libatius Borage.

After buying so many things, Jon had less than forty Galleons left from the original one hundred... If it wasn't for being short on money, Jon would have definitely bought more books on dark arts defense and potion-making.

Fortunately, Hogwarts didn't charge tuition or accommodation fees, and as a first-year student, he wouldn't be going to Hogsmeade, so forty Galleons should be enough for the year.

He declined Eric's offer to buy him an owl as a pet...

During the last month at 86 Easterly Road, Jon immersed himself in a pile of magic books.

He had read through a dozen books, including the "adventure novels" written by Gilderoy Lockhart.

He had transformed the smallest room at 86 Estrilu Road into an animal room, where he kept several cages of experimental white mice.

There was a small loophole in the "Reasonable Restriction of Underage Sorcery Act," which did not include young wizards who had not yet started learning magic but already possessed a wand (and were not registered by the Ministry of Magic).

So Jon took advantage of this loophole and spent the month using his wand for magic at home to his heart's content.

Unfortunately, the results he achieved seemed somewhat unsatisfactory!

On the evening of August 31st, Jon held his wand and appeared in the animal room.

"Stupefy!" he raised his wand and aimed at one of the cages.

Stunning Spell, a commonly used spell by members of the Ministry of Magic and the Order of the Phoenix, was also a quite practical spell that could effectively cause the target to temporarily lose consciousness, even having some effect on giants and dragons. Jon found its usage in the last few pages of "The Dark Arts: A Guide to Self-Protection."

Since the Unforgivable Curses were completely banned at the moment, the Stunning Spell was undoubtedly one of the most powerful single-target offensive spells.

A faint red light flashed and hit the white mouse in the cage.

"Squeak..." The white mouse let out a cry of surprise, but quickly moved to another position, and that was it.

Jon smiled helplessly. This was the best he had done throughout the summer vacation. If he used this spell against an enemy, it would at most make them feel a little itchy.

The release of the Stunning Spell, as well as most other spells, was relatively simple, but achieving actual effects was quite difficult.

In this world, many spells did not require in-depth study, but they relied heavily on the emotions of wizards.

Just like casting the Unforgivable Curses, one had to be ruthless; casting the Patronus Charm, one had to think of truly happy things... Releasing the Stunning Spell also required the wizard to have a hopeful emotion of wanting to stun the target from the bottom of their heart.

Jon felt that if he were in the world of Dungeons & Dragons, he would not be a wizard, but a sorcerer of bloodline, due to his matured mentality rarely experiencing significant fluctuations in emotions. This stable emotion, on the contrary, was not conducive to the casting of many spells.

However, not every spell was beyond his grasp.

Raising his wand again, Jon aimed at the white mouse and said, "Petrificus Totalus!"

In an instant, the expression on the white mouse's face and the movement of its body froze at the same time. It seemed as if it had been petrified and could not move, only its eyes were darting around.

The release of the Petrification Curse required more precise control over the wand movement and incantation, as well as a deep understanding of the spell's effects. Jon was quite satisfied with the result of this spell.

However, the flaws of the Petrification Curse are also evident. It takes several seconds from the spell hitting the target to the target being fully petrified. If the opponent reacts quickly, they can remove the curse and counterattack.

Jon put away his wand and looked nostalgically at the animal room in front of him.

Tomorrow he would be heading to Hogwarts, and this animal room would lose its meaning until he turned seventeen.

He went to a corner of the room and found a glass cage that had been almost abandoned here.

Two red South African spiders were lying quietly in the glass cage, surrounded by the remains of breadworms and crickets.

These were the "pets" that Jon had requested Eric to buy for him two weeks ago.

He carefully wrapped the glass cage in cotton and put it into a cardboard box, then placed the box in his suitcase.

Near the cardboard box, there was a small bag of realgar that he had bought from a pharmacy.

And a rooster-shaped alarm clock that he had recently bought from a supermarket in Southampton... It was said to have recorded a rooster's crowing inside, and would make the sound when it rang. Jon had also brought along some extra batteries.

With everything prepared, Jon lay down on the bed and quickly fell asleep, entering dreamland.
