Kapitel 9: Episode 8

Who can know the mind of a man, except the spirit of the man.

The Apostle Paul

It was about 4:00 pm when he decided to go see his family.

His mother and siblings stayed at Agege, it had been many years since he saw his mother and three sisters last. He wondered how his mother would feel to see him after so long a time. Will she be happy after he had caused trouble for her and ran away without a word.

He thought about his task, "how do I accomplish this task?" he asked himself.

Nonso was speechless and confused, he didn't know what to do. His task had left him unusually broken. His heart was racing and his mind was empty, he wondered what to do next, there was no way out now; no alternative for this.

He decided he was going to do what Akpara Ekpe had demanded.

He reached his family home at 6:00 pm, the day was yet bright as the sun still shone far in its horizon.

The weather was a little cold, the evening breeze swept through the trees and they bent in response. The cock crowed to announce the going of the sun, the nanny goat bleated to gather her young together.

The day seemed normal and nothing out of the ordinary happened that could have disclosed the presence of an outsider.

No one was outdoor when he got into the compound, he walked towards the entrance of the house and gave the local knock....

"Kpam kpam" no one answered.

I always wonder why people don't answer at the first 'kpam kpam' but Nonso did the knock again.

"Kpam kpam here."

A girl of about fifteen years came out.

"May I help you sir?" she said.

"My name is Nonso Chizitere....."

At the mention of the name the girl shouted and ran into the house.

"Mama! Mama! Mama! Come and see oo" she shouted as she ran.

The girl came back out, her face was lighted with joy and sheer euphoria. An older woman followed behind her, she was confused not knowing what was going on. Immediately Nonso saw the woman he recognized her but he was scared to approach maybe she hated him or wouldn't want him here.

She asked her daughter what the matter was.

"Mama look." the girl said.

The woman looked intently at him and then tears filled her eyes, she wept bitterly and then she called out to him.

"My son."

She embraced him as tightly as she could, they both cried. His two other sisters came out from the house and joined in the embrace. It had been twelve long years since he left home, his youngest sister was barely three at the time. She had no memory of him, she had only seen pictures of him and heard tales of his delinquencies.

Mama Nonso was happy to have her son back home after many moons, she prepared a special meal for him; Akpu and Egusi soup - Nothing like mothers cooking.

At the sitting room, they sat talking about the past and the things that happened in the community since he ran away. His mother asked him if he was here to stay. He replied in the negative.

" I'm sorry mama, I'm just here for two days. I will be leaving next tomorrow, at least this time I'm not running."

His mother was saddened but she knew he was a grown man now and she couldn't restrain him.

After much excitement and stories shared they went to bed.

{Meanwhile}

The night was still young when Vero and Cyril started out in the hotel, it was the first time anything like this had ever happened between them. Cyril didn't know what line to start with, she stared at him expecting him to utter the opening word but Cyril was lost for words.

She walked up to him, held him by the hand and pushed him to the bed.

"Don't be scared." she said to him

" do you have the money with you?" he nodded in response.

She laughed and said "that's more like it, if you had been doing this, things would have been sweet between us and then the night went on as one would only imagine."

Nonso couldn't sleep through the night, thoughts of his task had left him restless but still he had to accomplish the task nonetheless.

He walked out of his room and turned towards his eldest sisters room. she was deeply soaked into her sleep and he had made sure of that. Earlier he had given each of his sisters gifts and they included necklaces, bangles, shoes and drinks.

He had laced Nnoma's drink with a mixture of lavender and valerian root. Nnoma innocently had drank a considerable amount of her drink; enough to put a cow to sleep.

He walked towards her bedside and tapped her to ensure she was still asleep, she laid there as still as a log.

He brought out from his back pack a sharp blade and a polythene bag; his task had brought him this far. He reached out to her, tears filled his eyes, " forgive me sister, it had to be done." he said.
