Kapitel 21: Legend of the Magi King Part One

As they sat in the self-driving white sedan Fey rolled the slime core around in her hands. It's cold touch felt nice on her sore joints. The short bit of combat she had done previously against the bull beast had left her hands sore. Dax just looked outside the window as he watched the scenery pass. He was completely lost in thought. The last conversation with Fey was replaying in his head.

He pulled out his necklace and looked at it. The orb's star seemed to be a small amount brighter than it was before, as if the essence of the slime had fueled it somehow. He hoped his mother fulfilled his request and that his teacher would be able to answer all his questions.

"What are you thinking about Daxy?" Fey asked, as she noticed how spaced out he was.

He had no response.

"Daxy!" Fey shouted to snap him out of his trance.

Her sudden yelling caused him to wake up from his daze. He turned to look at her. "What?" He asked.

"What were you thinking about so seriously?" Fey asked.

"Just about all the questions I have." Dax said.

"Well, it is interesting to say the least." Fey said. "Just try not to show off too much. If you are some kind of prodigy, then my mother will be proud instead of disappointed."

Dax thought for a moment to think of a comeback.

"Daxy, you are going to have to get wittier with the comebacks." Fey said before he could figure one out. "It's going to be no fun to tease you otherwise."

"Sorry, I guess I have never had a relationship like this." Dax replied.

"You mean with an attractive rich girl?" Fey asked while batting her eyes playfully.

"No, one that required quips." Dax replied. "It is rather troublesome."

"You'll get the hang of it." Fey said with a big grin. "Unless my father kills you in the training first. Daxy! Don't die, okay?!"

"Is your dad that bad?" Dax asked.

"Ugh… Well… Yes…" Fey responded. "He used to be a trainer before he was the captain. Sometimes he would get a little too overzealous with the recruits, and well… they died. So, they promoted him to captain, you know, to stop any more incidents… and deaths…"

"This would have been useful information before I agreed to have your dad train me!" Dax complained.

"Well, to be fair, I thought you would be fine at the time. I am still about seventy percent sure you will be okay…" Fey explained. "I mean you have some superpower inside of you. If you manage to tap into it, I don't even think my dad could stand against you. Of course, if you can't tap into it… Don't die Dax!"

Dax sighed. "So many regrets right now." He said softly while keeping his eyes closed.

The car rolled to a stop. They had made it to Dax's house. "Well, I have school tomorrow Daxy, so I will see you after school!"

"Sounds good." Dax replied. "But what are we going to do?"

"Beats me." Fey said. "Just make sure it is something that entertains me!" With that last line she started laughing uncontrollably.

Dax sighed again and exited the white sedan. As soon as he shut the door the car darted off to Fey's house. Dax was surprised and delighted to see his teacher sitting on his front steps waiting for him.

"Hello there!" His teacher called out. "I understand you have some questions!"

"Yes!" Dax replied, the excitement was palpable in his voice. He rushed over to his teacher. "I need to know everything you know about the Magi King."

"Everything I know about the legend of the Magi King?" Teal replied. "I think that's something that can be done. Shall we go inside and talk, or do you want to talk here? I don't care as I get paid either way."

"Here is fine." Dax replied swiftly. He was excited to hopefully get answers and did not want to wait not even a second longer than he had to.

"Okay then." Teal said. "So let me start by saying this is all just from tales that have been passed down generation to generation. The legend happened so long ago that we have no proof that it actually ever happened at all. Except for Hope Lake, but that's only a theory that a few scholars have."

"Just tell me." Dax said, his impatience getting the better of him.

"I just wanted you to be prepared is all, some of the stuff I am about to tell you is a bit odd." Teal explained. "It's reasonable to believe that some of the elements of the story were exaggerated over the years. So, if I say something that seems to defy all logic and reason, it is probably because someone lied along the way."

"I understand." Dax said. "So, what do you know about the Magi King?"

The front door opened, and Helen stood in the door frame. "Dax! Did you kill your slime dear?" She asked.

"I did." Dax said.

"That's my boy!" Helen said. "Listen, we have an appointment with the doctor in the morning. They are going to investigate your nanite issue and your nightmares. So don't stay up late, your appointment is in the morning. Also, dinner will be ready in an hour."

"Thanks mom." Dax said. "Now if you don't mind…"

"Oh! Am I interrupting your lessons?!" Helen replied. "I am so sorry! I will let you know when dinner is done!"

"Thank…" Dax started, but before he could finish his phrase his mother had already shut the door and went back inside.

"Might want to take a seat, the legend of the Magi King can take a bit to tell." Teal said.

Dax took a seat at the opposite end of the stair. "Alright tell me already." Dax said. "Tell me the legend of the Magi King."

Kapitel 22: Legend of the Magi King Part Two

Teal took a deep breath and cleared his throat before he started reciting his tale. "In ages long past, in time long forgotten, the world that we now enjoy was vastly different. All the technology we enjoy today did not exist and humanity, along with other races, were on the verge of extinction.

Unlike today where monsters are mostly mindless beasts that sparsely wander the lands, the past is vastly different. Under the command of the monster king, the monsters were intelligent and organized. They kept humans, elves, dwarves, and whatever else they could find as slaves.

Their strength was unmatched as well as their numbers. No one could stand against them. This was the planet of monsters, at least until the appearance of the Magi King.

He is said to have come from humble beginnings, an escaped slave, at that. But he was the first human to discover how to wield the weapon of the monster king. A mystical force known as mana. With it he was able to cast unimaginable spells that should change the very landscape. He attempted to teach it to others, but sadly no one grasped the concept quite like he did.

After years of proving himself over and over in battle, he attacked the monster king directly. It is said that they destroyed each other with powers so spectacular that the mere meeting of their forces created the crater that is Lake Hope.

After the Magi King died, so did human understanding of mana. After the monster king died, the monsters lost their intelligence and their organization, well save for a few, that were later culled by the disciples of the Magi King.

With the monster threat gone, humanity was allowed to thrive, and technology grew over time. Until we got to the point we are now, thousands of years later."

"What happened to the other races?" Dax asked.

"Humans." Teal replied. "I guess without a common foe, over time humans felt the need to assert their own dominance. No one has seen any of the other races in an age. I fear they were most likely wiped from existence by our ancestors.

Do you have any more questions about the tale of the Magi King?"

"Did he have a family?" Dax asked.

"That wasn't passed down." Teal explained. "Although I suppose it is possible that some of his disciples were his descendants. It is said they possessed access to the mana, just not like he did."

"Was it like a genetic mutation? Or some odd knowledge? How come he could use mana?" Dax asked.

"That's not something they knew about that long ago, or if they did that sure didn't survive in the stories." Teal replied.

"Do you know anything about an heir?!" Dax asked.

"An heir to the Magi King?" Teal asked. "That would be interesting. I wonder how such a person would fare in our science-based world."

The door opened once more, and Helen poked her head out. "Dax, dinner is ready." She said, "Finish up, wash your hands and come eat."

"Yes, mom." Dax replied.

With Dax's answer Helen went back inside.

"Oh, earlier your mom asked if you killed a slime." Teal said. "You said you did, are you finished with your special assignment? Do you have the core as proof?"

"I did, and no Fey has the core." Dax said. "I had issues handling it…"

"What kind of issues?" Teal asked. "I have never heard of anyone having any problems transporting a slime core. Most find them to be therapeutic and great for aches and pains."

"It was a different kind of issue." Dax said.

"If you are having more issues, I need to know as your professor." Teal said. "That way I don't assign you anything that could potentially be a problem later on."

"It isn't something that I am comfortable talking about." Dax said.

"Like an allergy to monsters?" Teal asked. "I mean you are an anomaly because of your nanite problem, but monster allergy is a well-documented condition that happens from time to time."

"No." Dax said. "Just let me figure it out."

"Fine, just don't let it affect our overall class score." Teal said. "Remember my pay raise and nicer office is on the line." Teal paused for a moment. "And your educational future too I guess."

Dax sighed and stood up. "Thanks for the story, I will have Fey bring you the slime core tomorrow."

"Alright." Teal said. "Tell her to bring it to my office in the morning before class."

"See you on class day." Dax said as he opened the door and went inside. He then went to the sink and washed his hands before making his way to the table.

"So how was your first monster hunt?" Frank asked.

"It was eventful." Dax said. "Have you ever killed a monster dad?"

"I have." Frank replied. "I will always remember; it was a wolf type. Thing was dangerously fast, but it had cornered your mother and I while we were having a nice date in the forest. I had no choice but to be the protector your mother needed, and after an intense fight I slayed the beast."

"Not how I remember it at all dear." Helen said with a giggle. "Let's see as I recall, you threw your hands into the air and ran around like a freshly decapitated chicken screaming at the top of your lungs."

"Must have forgotten that part." Frank said.

"Luckily that defense force member was nearby and heard your ear shattering screams." Helen continued.

"Yes, but had I not called for help and distracted the beast while help arrived… Well, we might not be sitting here tonight eating this wonderful meal that you have prepared." Frank said. "So, like I said, I slayed the foul beast and rescued your mother."

"Whatever you say dear." Helen said, with a light sigh.

"So, you never killed a monster?" Dax asked to clarify. His words hit Frank hard.

"No, not personally." Frank admitted. "Why do you ask that?"

"Has grandfather? Or anyone in our family?" Dax asked. "I really need to know."

"I'll ask him later." Frank said. "So how did it go with your S rank rich girl friend? Did you make any progress with her?"
